Agatha Hegnauer was baptised on 13 November 1777 in the church at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland. She was the first child of Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Radig, who had married in the same church ten months before, and so the eldest sister of Jakob Hegnauer.1–3

Igis was a farming village of vineyards, orchards and livestock, with mills along its millstream, and its church had been Reformed since 1532.4 Agatha was the eldest of seven children. Her brother Nutt was baptised in 1779, Christian in January 1781, Jakob in September 1783 and her only sister, Elisabeth, in May 1785.3, 5–7 Two more boys followed, in March 1789 and in May 1791, and each was named Christian, like their father.8–9 None of the three Christians lived long. A Christian aged about three was buried in June 1784 and a baby Christian in September 1789, both very probably her brothers, and the youngest was buried the day after his baptism in May 1791.10–12

What became of Agatha herself is not known. Her baptism is the only record of her that has been found.

    The Igis baptism register names her parents as Christ [Christian] Hegnauer and Ursula Rodig, the couple who had married at Igis on 15 Jan 1777 (the bride indexed there as Ursula Redig) and who are named, as Christian and Ursula Radig, at the baptisms of six more children to 1791.

  • Sources: Her baptism is known from FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed parish registers ("Switzerland, Catholic and Reformed Church Records"); the image has not been viewed.1 The register names her parents as Christ Hegnauer and Ursula Rodig; Christ is the usual short form of Christian, and Rodig one of several readings (Radig, Redig, Nadig) of her mother's surname. The family is the study's family group F0066; the evidence for each of her brothers and sisters is on their own profiles and her father's.
  • Her later life: The study's extract of the Igis indexes (entries indexed under the surname Hegnauer and its variants) holds no marriage or burial of an Agatha Hegnauer. The Igis burial index is thin before about 1780, so she may have died young without a surviving index entry; if she married outside Igis, or her burial was indexed under a married name, the extract would not show it. Leads: the Igis burial register, 1777–1800, read on the images; marriages about 1795–1810 at Igis and the neighbouring parishes (Zizers, Trimmis, Untervaz, Chur).
