Christian Hegnauer was baptised at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, on 24 March 1789, a son of Christian Hegnauer and Ursula Radig.1 He was the second of their sons to be given his father's name; the first, Christian, had very probably been buried in 1784, aged three.2–3 His brothers Nutt and Jakob were then about ten and five, and his sisters Agatha and Elisabeth eleven and nearly four.4–7

An infant Christian Hegnauer, very probably he, was buried at Igis on 3 September 1789; if so, he had lived about five months.8 In eighteenth-century Graubünden, infections such as smallpox and tuberculosis, and in bad years famine, raised the death rate from time to time, above all among children.9 Twenty months later his parents named another son Christian, who lived only a day or so (see his profile).10–11

  • Father's name: The index gives the father as "Gschwen" Hegnauer, a misreading, probably of "Christen", the form in which his father's name is written at the baptism of Nutt in 1779; the mother, Ursula Radig, identifies the family.1, 4
  • Burial (probable): The burial of 3 Sep 1789 names no parents. He is the only Christian Hegnauer baptised at Igis in 1789, and the burial index computes a birth year of 1789.8 The index gives his age as "0 days", which read literally would mean a newborn, not a child of five months; but it gives the same age for Georg Hegnauer, buried on 14 Jan 1790 on the same register page three weeks after his baptism, so "0 days" seems to be the index's rendering of an age under a year (an inference).12 Reading the register (DGS 8014188, image 375) should settle it.
  • An index line once thought to be another burial: The line for Ursula Hegnauer as the mother of a child Christian (66V7-5C38), undated in the study's extract, is the mother's entry of the burial of his younger brother on 22 May 1791, not a record of him.11
  • FamilySearch and WikiTree: He had no FamilySearch profile until September 2026 (his baptism had been proposed for GJDP-GHF, the profile of his younger brother); the study then created PN73-CYG, with his baptism and burial. WikiTree Hegnauer-60 was created by the study in September 2026.
