Key finds

1. Anna Margreth Bernet's parents. The family can now be reconstructed from the index.
   • Marriage: probably the Igis entry of 1797 for "Johanes Berent" and "Maria Torether" (no day given): 66VW-FKZ7, DGS 8014188_002, image 348. Later baptisms name the bride "Maria Doroth(ea) Grest".
   • Children: eleven, baptised at Igis between 1797 and 1824.
   • Dorothea Grest: baptised 20 Jul 1775 at Zizers, daughter of Christian Grest and Barbara Marin(i): 66VM-VHZ2. She was buried at Igis on 29 Jun 1830, aged 55: 6F8D-974X.
   • Johannes Bernet: probably the Johannes baptised at Igis on 5 Nov 1768, son of Johannes Bernet and Susanna Nuttli (66VM-66NB). He was buried at Igis on 26 Nov 1858, aged 90, with the same parents named: 6F8D-9QDF.
2. The Bernet–Hirschi link. Anna Margreth's sister Barbara Bernet (baptised 1804) married Christian Dönz at Igis in 1833. They emigrated to Highland, Illinois, where the family was known as Tontz. The Find a Grave index has "Barbara Bernett Tontz", 1804–1881 (QVKY-B5BL).
   • Three of Barbara's children married three of Susanna Katharina Hirschi's brothers and sisters, in 1860 and 1863.
   • Anna Margreth's son Leonhard married Susanna at Highland in 1866. The two wives' families were therefore already joined by marriage before he arrived.
3. Susanna Hirschi's father. He was probably the Christian Hirschi baptised 28 Aug 1814 at Thierachern, the parish next to Amsoldingen, son of Peter Hirschi and Maria Stutzmann: 66JX-LDB7.
   • His parents also had sons baptised at Thierachern in 1803 and 1805, and his own marriage (1833) is indexed at Reutigen, another neighbouring parish.
   • The family therefore lived west of Thun, around Thierachern, Reutigen and Amsoldingen, for two generations.
   • Schangnau is almost certainly their place of citizenship (Heimatort), not a residence. Amsoldingen stays the probable birthplace.
   • Her own baptism is not indexed: Amsoldingen's registers of 1830–1850 are not in the index.
4. Madlena Krädtli. Two new findings, one against the earlier reading:
   • Jacob Krätl was buried at Igis on 10 Jan 1763, aged 73 (66V7-PBQB). He is probably the Jacob Krädtli who married in 1719.
   • Caution on the 1774 burial: "Magdalena Krättlen, 52" carries no married surname. The Igis burials of 1767–1778 give married women both surnames, for example "Christina Ludwig Krätlenen" (1767), a Krättli who had married Michel Ludwig. The 1774 woman may therefore have been unmarried, and could even be the 1722 twin herself. I suggest treating the burial as possible, not probable, until the image is read.
   • The 1722 baptism's "Bartli" may also be Bantli, a Zizers family.
5. Leta Gujan. Her baptism is still not found, but she was not the only Gujan wife in the Igis area:
   • Anna Gujan married Christen Täscher of Igis on 5 Nov 1728. The marriage is in the Valzeina/Fanas register (6F8D-BRWN); Valzeina is the village on the slope above Igis. Their children were baptised at Igis in 1730 and 1732, with the mother indexed "Anna Bujanim/Bujanin", the same misreading as Leta's own "Leda Bujanim/Bujani".
   • An Elsbeth or Dorothea Gujan, wife of Johannes Müller of Zizers, had children there from 1731 to 1739.
   • In the Prättigau (Luzein/St. Antönien/Küblis register) a Nutt Gujan (born about 1678, buried 1740) had children from 1711 to 1732 with Barbara Ladner; Ladner is an Igis surname.
   • Leta's first son was named Nuttin, so a father named Nutt would fit.
   • All of this is a lead, not a parentage.
6. Ursula Nadig/Radig. Nothing new identifies her. Coverage checks show that Trimmis, Untervaz and Chur baptisms of the 1740s are not indexed.
7. Anna Margreth's death. None was found in any Swiss or US index. The Igis 19th-century register (DGS 8195990) has no death entry for her; all 240 Bernet entries were read.

1. Anna Margreth Bernet (H0036): her parents Johannes Bernet and Dorothea Grest

Found

The parents' marriage (probable). 66VW-FKZ7: marriage of "Johanes Berent" and "Maria Torether", 1797 (no day or month indexed), Igis; DGS 8014188_002, image 348.

• Why it fits:
  • It is the only Bernet-like groom among the indexed Igis marriages of 1796–1797.
  • "Torether" reads as Dorothe(a). The mother is "Maria Doroth Grest" or "Maria Dorothea Grest" at the baptisms of 1810, 1812 and 1815 (6F8C-PDJB, 6F8C-GQVG, 6F8C-B8ZC), so her full name was Maria Dorothea.
  • The first child was baptised on 18 Dec 1797.
• Judgement: probable. The image should show the bride's surname and whether the date is complete. It was not recorded in the Zizers entries or under Grest (see the searches).

Their children (all baptised at Igis). The first ARK is the child's entry; others are duplicates in a second index batch.

The member tree's claims in H0036 check out where the index can test them:

• sister Dorothea died at Igis on 25 Jan 1843;
• sister Barbara was born in 1804 and died in 1881 (see Highland below);
• brother Jacob was born and died in 1824;
• the mother is called Maria Dorothea.

Dorothea Grest: baptism (probable) and burial (found).

• Burial: 6F8D-974X (also 6F8D-32GN): "Dorothea Bernet Grest", died 26 Jun 1830, buried 29 Jun 1830, Igis, aged 55, spouse Joh. Bernet (6F8D-974F). This confirms the member tree's date.
• Baptism: 66VM-VHZ2: "Dorothe", baptised 20 Jul 1775, Zizers, parents Christian Grest × Barbara Marini; DGS 8014188_001, image 135.
• Why it fits:
  • Grest is a Zizers family. No Grest principal appears in the Igis index.
  • Aged 55 in June 1830 gives a birth in 1774–1775.
  • It is the only Dorothea Grest baptism in the index, 1768–1782.
  • Her own children fit the naming custom: the first son Christian and the second daughter Barbara carry the names of her parents.
• Judgement: probable.
• Her brothers and sisters (Zizers baptisms, all to Christian Grest × Barbara Marin(i)):

A Christian Grest "born 1745" was buried at Zizers on 23 Jan 1830 (66V7-FHHF). Joos Grest and Maria Elisabeth Castelli married at Zizers on 3 Dec 1744 (66VW-PYDT). Christian Grest's own marriage to Barbara Marin (about 1771) was not found.

Johannes Bernet: baptism and burial (probable).

• Burial: 6F8D-9QDF (also 6F8D-41DJ, 6F88-1GRG): Johannes Bernet, died 24 Nov 1858, buried 26 Nov 1858, Igis, aged 90, parents Johannes Bernet and Susanna Nuttli. No spouse is indexed.
• Baptism: 66VM-66NB: Johannes, baptised 5 Nov 1768, Igis, parents Johannes Bernet × Susanna "Mutler" (father's entry 66VM-66JM).
  • An elder Johannes of the same couple was baptised on 28 Jul 1767 (mother's entry 66VM-XYDB, "Zusanna Bernat Nutlener"). He presumably died, although no burial is indexed.
  • The couple's other children: Maria, 29 Mar 1764 (66VM-KVR9, mother "Nutlenen"); Margaritha, 21 Aug 1765 (66VM-2GMH, "Nudlner"); Maria, 12 May 1770 (66VM-2DF9, "Ruttlen"), buried 26 Feb 1772 (66V7-GRSC).
• Which Johannes married Dorothea Grest? Igis had two Johannes Bernets at this time, and the index never names Dorothea's husband's parents.
  • Johannes × Elsbeth Baumann had children from 1788 to 1807: Hans Michel 1788, Magdalena 1790 and 1807, Elssbeth 1792, Anna Maria 1795 and 1798, Anna Margreth 1802 and 1804.
  • A Johannes Bernet aged 62 was buried on 30 Nov 1824 (6F88-N5KH, 6F8D-9RT1), with no kin indexed.
  • The Baumann husband began having children about nine years earlier than Dorothea's husband, so he is best matched with the elder man (born about 1762). His children's names, Hans Michel and Anna Maria, are those of Hans Michel Bernet (buried 1804, born about 1730, 6F88-1PF1) and his wife Anna Maria Wittwer. Their children were baptised in 1758, 1759, 1760 and 1764, which leaves room for a son in 1762.
  • That leaves the 1768 Johannes (died 1858) as Dorothea's husband. He was seven years older than her, and their second son Johannes carries his father's name.
  • Judgement: probable, by elimination. The image of the 1858 burial (DGS 8195990) may add "Wittwer der Dorothea Grest".
• His parents (possible):
  • "Susanna Bertten Nuttlen", buried 3 May 1771, aged about 43 (66V7-V7HC). "Bertten" is probably Bernet.
  • Johannes Bernet, buried 16 Feb 1785, "born 1734" (66V7-RGQQ).
  • Their marriage (about 1763) is not indexed.

Barbara Bernet (1804–1881) and the Tontz family of Highland, Illinois.

• Swiss baptisms of her children (parents Christian Dönz × Barbara Bernet):

• 1860 census, Township 4N Range 5W, Madison Co., Illinois (the Hirschis' township): Christian Tontz, born 1802 (MXCC-ZM9); Barbara, born 1805 (MXCC-ZTG); John, 1836 (MXCC-C11); Christian, 1839 (MXCC-ZTP); Elizabeth, 1841 (MXCC-ZMM, MXCC-ZT5).
• Find a Grave index, Highland Cemetery (FamilySearch geocodes the cemetery to Pennsylvania, Tennessee or West Virginia; it is Highland, Madison Co.):
  • Barbara Bernett Tontz, born 6 Nov 1804, died 26 Aug 1881 (QVKY-B5BL). Her 15 Sep 1804 baptism conflicts with that birth date; the index or the stone is wrong.
  • Christian Tontz Sr., 26 Jul 1802 – 26 Apr 1893 (QVKY-B5BG).
  • Jones Tontz, 27 Apr 1836 – 18 Jul 1892 (QVVV-XXKT).
• Marriages to Susanna Hirschi's family (Madison County marriages):
  • Jones Tontz × Elizabeth Hirschi, 4 Jul 1860 (QK9L-7MLD);
  • Elizabeth Tontz × John Hirsche, 14 Oct 1860 (QK9L-QV97). John is probably Susanna's brother Johannes (1838–1869);
  • Christian Tontz × Rosina Hirsche, 25 Oct 1863 (QK9L-7WDQ).
  • Find a Grave has Elizabeth Tontz Hirschi, 26 Aug 1841 – 1939 (QVKY-BPMS), whose birth date matches the Dönz baptism; Johanes Hirschi, 1838–1869 (QVKY-B5YF); and Rosina Margaret Hirschi Tontz, 1844–1924 (QVKY-BPJW).
• Judgement: found. Barbara Bernet of Igis = Barbara Tontz of Highland. This explains why Anna Margreth's sons Leonhard (1866) and John (1869) married in Madison County. It also means that when Leonhard married Susanna Katharina Hirschi, her sister Elisabeth and brother Johannes were already married to his first cousins.

Candidates and side finds

• Christian Bernet (1797) married Anna Dolf in 1858. His first marriage was not looked for.
• A Johannes Bernet married Ursina Grässli ("Gres") on 13 Jun 1824 at Igis (6F84-CR4F, 6F84-JCW3). Their son Stefan was born in 1834 and married at Zizers in 1859 (66VW-G6TT). This is neither of the two older men: both of their wives were still alive in 1824. The groom is probably a younger Johannes, not identified.
• Joh. Bernatt × Dorothea Boner (Bener), children 1775 and 1777. Dorothea was buried in 1813, "born 1735" (6F88-YTFM). Their daughter Maria Catharina married Crispin Krättli (6F8D-4KLM). They are an older couple and not Anna Margreth's parents.
• 1855 and 1860 residence of the Hirschis: see section 2.

Her death (after 1884, Missouri): negative

The only deaths are the known Find a Grave entries for Mary Hegnauer (1851–1885) and Emil Hegnauer, born 1870 (QV2K-NN17, geocoded to "Prairie, Greene, Alabama", which is wrong). That Emil is the one in H0038's notes.

2. Susanna Katharina Hirschi (H0038): birthplace, parents, the family's movements, emigration

Found

Her father's baptism (probable). 66JX-LDB7: Christian Hirschi, born 18 Aug 1814, baptised 28 Aug 1814, Thierachern (Bern), parents Peter Hirschi × Maria Stutzmann.

• Why it fits:
  • The 1833 marriage names the groom's father as Peter (68V1-7361).
  • The 1850 passenger list has a grandfather aged 71, probably Peter.
  • The year agrees with Find a Grave's "14 Aug 1814".
• Conflict: Find a Grave gives the birthplace as Schangnau and the day as 14 Aug. The Thierachern entry gives the day as 18 Aug.
• Siblings, also baptised at Thierachern to Peter × Maria Stutzmann: Peter, 24 Apr 1803 (66JX-K4C3); Johannes, 1 Jan 1805 (66JX-RDJB). This search returned only these three, so they are the whole indexed family.
• Judgement: probable.

Her parents' marriage (already known; details).

• Groom: 68V1-7361, Christian Hirschi, father Peter, marriage 1833, Reutigen, Bern.
• Bride: 68V1-73X8, Magdalena Stocker, father Johannis.
• No day is indexed. Find a Grave's "26 Oct 1833, Amsoldingen" may come from the Amsoldingen register, if the banns were in one parish and the wedding in the other. Not tested.

The birthplace conflict: resolved as far as the index allows.

• Three adjacent parishes on the west side of the Thuner See each hold part of the record:
  • Thierachern: the father's baptism (1814) and his parents' other children (1803, 1805);
  • Reutigen: the parents' marriage (1833);
  • Amsoldingen: Susanna's origin on the 1866 marriage certificate ("of Amseldingen"), and her sisters' births in 1836 and 1844 (Find a Grave).
• Nothing in the index places the family at Schangnau (Emmental). Schangnau is the home of the Hirschi family register (Billeter, FHL 599705), which is organized by place of citizenship.
• Judgement: born at Amsoldingen (probable), citizen of Schangnau (probable). The family lived in the Thun-west area for at least two generations before emigrating; the index shows no move from Schangnau.
• Her baptism is not indexed. A place-only search for births at Amsoldingen, 1830–1850, returns no Amsoldingen entry at all, only neighbouring parishes. The Amsoldingen Taufrodel for 1846 (Staatsarchiv Bern, free online) remains the source.

Emigration. The question's "c.1860s–1870" is superseded. The master already has the family's arrival at New York on the Belmont, 1 Aug 1850 (Ancestry manifest). The 1869 move to Bates County, Missouri, was within the United States. One new candidate supports an early arrival:

• 61F8-DN2: "G Hershey", Illinois State Census 1855, Townships 3–5 Range 5, Madison County, 10 in family, page 5, microfilm 976670.
• "G" may be a misreading of "C" (Christian). The size fits the Hirschi household, and 1855 lists heads of household only.
• Judgement: possible; check the image.

Candidates (not fitting)

• Magdalena Stocker's baptism (Boltigen, 5 Dec 1814, per Find a Grave) is not indexed. The only Magdalena Stocker entries of 1813–1816 are other women: a Boltigen burial of 1871 with parents Christen Stocker × Anna Gobeli (68VY-QDNZ), and marriages at Boltigen, Blumenstein and elsewhere.
• Hirschi children born 1833–1850 whose mothers' names begin St-: Studer (Thun), Stalder (Eggiwil and Kurzenberg), Stauffer, Staudenmann, Stüdler (Trub). None has a Stocker mother.

3. Ursula Nadig / Radig (H0158): baptism about 1746 and parents

Found

Nothing that is her baptism, and no Nadig family at Igis or Zizers from 1715 to 1790 apart from her own entries.

What the index does and does not cover (useful for the next step)

• Igis/Zizers film (DGS 8014188).
  • Every principal surname like N*dig: only her own 1808 burial and Eva Nadig, bride at Zizers in 1813 (66VW-8BYT).
  • Every principal surname like R*dig: only her own married-life entries, plus one "Eva Rüedig" (66VM-6948), mother of a Christian Hartman (date not taken). This Rüedi or Riedi reading is a reminder that "Radig" might also be Rüedi or Riedi, although three independent entries (1808, 1854, 1858) read Nadig.
• Ursulas baptised at Igis or Zizers, 1740–1752 (page 1 of 264 results; principal entries rank first, but pages 2–3 were not read): Dolf 1742 and 1750; Täscher 1746 and 1752; Kegel 1746 (Zizers); Schmid 1745; Weis 1750; Willi 1751 (Zizers); Reppolt 1752; Dakatz 1752. No Nadig or Radig. The only 1746 Igis Ursula is Ursula Täscher, 27 Aug 1746 (66VM-DVKG), daughter of Christen Täscher × Manga Balser. Nothing suggests she is Ursula.
• Nadig fathers anywhere, 1725–1760, in Graubünden: only at Tschiertschen (the known family) and Schiers (Lentz Nadig, 1737, son of Salomon Nadig × Cathrina Plaisch, 66V3-TN6S). Collection-wide, the only Ursulas with a Nadig father, 1736–1756, are two Maria Ursulas at Mels, St. Gallen (1747 and 1751). Both were buried as infants.
• Haldenstein, across the Rhine from Igis: a Nadig family there by the late 1700s. Eva Hold-Nadig was buried in 1870, born about 1789, daughter of Georg Nadig (66V7-8WL7). This is a weak lead for a Nadig family near Igis.
• Trimmis, Untervaz and Chur: a place-only search for births 1738–1756 returns no entry at any of the three places. Their 1740s baptisms are not in the index, so her baptism could be in any of them unseen.

4. Madlena Krädtli (H1023): testing the 1722 baptism

Found

• Jacob Krätl, buried 10 Jan 1763, Igis, aged 73 (born about 1690): 66V7-PBQB. No kin is indexed.
  • He is the only adult Jacob Krättli burial at Igis, 1719–1790, so probably the groom of 1719. He was about 29 at that marriage.
  • He would have been alive when "Madlena" married Nutt Hegnauer (about 1745). That does not decide anything.
• Christina Krättli, probably Jacob's sister:
  • married Michel Ludwig, 27 Feb 1722, Igis ("Christina Kretlener", 66VW-G6MD);
  • buried 23 Aug 1767 as "Christina Ludwig Krätlenen", aged 71, born about 1696 (66V7-FH38).
• Image references: the 1719 marriage (66VW-LCXH) is DGS 8014188_002, image 160; the 1774 burial (66V7-PYRY) is image 370. The 1722 baptism (66VM-2D66) has no image reference on its index page.

Testing the hypothesis

1. Other children of Jacob × Margreth. All children indexed on the Igis/Zizers film with a father named Jac* and a mother named Marg*, 1718–1742, number 7:
   • Margaretha "Kratlis", 1719;
   • the twins Magdalena and Elssbeth "Bartli", 1722;
   • Anna Maria "Krät", 1725;
   • Matheus Schmid 1740 and Margreth Ladtner 1725 (other couples).
   • No child of this couple after 1725 is indexed. Every father surname Kr*, 1716–1745, gives the same two entries (1719, 1725).
2. "Bartli" could be Bantli. Bantli/Bandli is an established Zizers family: Anthoni Bantli × Lisabeth Flurin had children 1741–1750, and a Matheus Bantli married Luzia Meier in 1765. A Margretha Bantli was the mother of Matheus Schmid at Igis in 1740 (66VM-XYQC). But no Jacob Bantli is indexed in 1700–1740, and no Bantli married a Däscher. So "Bantli" is a real alternative reading of "Bartli", but it has no family to attach to either. The father's surname stays unproven.
3. The 1774 burial is weaker than it looked.
   • In the Igis burial index of 1767–1778, married women and widows are recorded with married and maiden surnames:
     • "Christina Ludwig Krätlenen" (1767);
     • "Susanna Bertten Nuttlen" (1771, Bernet's wife);
     • "Anna Dolff Ladner" (1775);
     • "Maria Michl Bernett" (1778);
     • and, later, "Ursula Hegnauer Nadig" (1808).
   • "Magdalena Krättlen, 52" (1774) has no married surname. Unmarried women of the period appear the same way (Maria Lemm and Margreth Düttschler, both aged 18, 1774–1775).
   • So the 1774 woman may have been unmarried, and would then not be Nutt Hegnauer's wife. An unmarried Magdalena Krättli born about 1722 would be exactly the 1722 twin.
   • Two readings are therefore open:
     • (A) the twin of 1722 married Nutt and was buried in 1774 with her married name omitted;
     • (B) the twin stayed single and was buried in 1774, and Nutt's wife was another Madlena Krättli.
   • The image (image 370) decides. Until it is read, I suggest treating the burial as possible rather than probable.
   • Note: the FamilySearch tree person GJD5-CWN is currently shown as "Madlena Hegnaùer Krätlner (1722–1774)", which appears to rest on this burial.
4. Weak points for (A):
   • Nutt and Madlena's only known daughter was named Elisabeth (1754), the name of the 1722 twin sister.
   • Their first son Jacob (1746) carries the name of both possible grandfathers.
   • No daughter was named Margreth, which argues nothing either way.
5. Other entries:
   • Margreth Descher, buried 31 Dec 1768, Igis, no age (66V7-5CSY). She could be Jacob Krädtli's widow, recorded by her maiden name; unidentified.
   • Marga Däscher-Wolser, buried 1771, born about 1727 (66V7-FHVL), is someone else.
   • No infant burial of Elssbeth or Magdalena, 1722–1732.
6. The 1725 sister. Anna Maria Krätli married Ulrich Obrecht, 3 Feb 1746, place "Schweiz" (6F8D-2C13). The record is attached in the FamilySearch tree to Anna Maria Krättli, 1725–1789 (LJB7-899); that is tree evidence only.
7. No other Magdalena with a Kr- father, 1712–1730, is indexed anywhere in Graubünden.

Judgement:

• 1722 baptism: possible, unchanged.
• Jacob Krädtli × Margret Däscher as her parents: possible.
• 1774 burial: downgrade to possible.
• Nearest evidence: the images of the 1722 baptism (the "Bartli" surname), the 1745 marriages, and the 1774 burial (image 370).

5. Leta Gujan (H1436): baptism and parents; a Gujan family naming sons Nutt

Found: other Gujan women who married in Igis and Zizers (new)

• Anna Gujan × Christen Täscher.
  • Married 5 Nov 1728: 6F8D-BRWN (groom 6F8D-BRWF), recorded in the Valzeina or Fanas register (DGS 8195998_006, image 154).
  • Children baptised at Igis:
    • Christian, 25 May 1730, mother "Anna Bujanim" (66VM-LSXL; mother's entry 66VM-LSXY);
    • Ceca, 12 Dec 1732, mother "Anna Bujanin" (66VM-JX5H; 66VM-JX5D).
  • A Magdalena was baptised at Igis on 21 Jul 1735 to "Christian Täscher × Anna Nuti" (66VM-XYM6). This may be a third child with the mother misread, or another couple.
  • The indexer read her surname exactly as Leta's ("Leda Bujanim" 1731, "Leda Bujani" 1734). Same parish and the same years: very probably a sister or close kinswoman of Leta.
• Elsbeth / Dorothea Gujan × Johannes Müller, Zizers. The mother is called Elsbeth in some entries and Dorothea in others, apparently one woman. There was a second Johannes Müller at Zizers, married to Margreth Götzi.
  • Cathrina Margaritha, 20 Jul 1731 (66VM-NMFL, "Dorothea Kuhani"); buried Nov 1731.
  • Anna Cathr, 18 Oct 1732 (66VM-J53F); buried 23 Sep 1733 (66V7-XYX3, "Elsb Guiani").

• Judgement: three Gujan women (Leta 1724, Anna 1728, Elsbeth/Dorothea by 1731) married into Igis and Zizers within seven years. They were probably of one family that had come down to the Rhine valley.

Candidates for her family

• Nutt Gujan × Barbara Ladner(i), DGS 8126170 (Luzein or St. Antönien register, place given as "Schweiz"). Nut Gujan was buried 14 Jun 1740, born about 1678 (6F8M-HQ45; this burial's film was not checked, and its batch is the one used for Luzein burials). Their children:

  • Elsbeth, 15 Mar 1711 (6FZB-KK6N, 6FZB-2PSW);
  • Ambrosi, 20 Jan or 30 Nov 1712 (6FZB-RLBW "Geian", 6FZB-RZR7);
  • Hans, 26 Sep 1714 (6FZB-L2SC);
  • Anna, 2 Sep 1716 (6FZB-VFCW, 6FZR-CDBX);
  • Margreth, 31 Aug 1718 (6FZB-NPGV, 6FZB-N1XV);
  • Christen, 26 Jun 1720 (6FZB-N1NG, 6FZB-LMYC);
  • Barbla, 3 Oct 1728 (6FZB-2CBV);
  • Christen, 1 Jul 1732 (6FZB-ZQ75, 6FZB-KZS6).

  Fit:

  • A Gujan father named Nutt would explain Leta's first son Nuttin (1725), a name new to the Hegnauers.
  • His wife was a Ladner, a common Igis surname, which is a possible route from the Prättigau to Igis.
  • Against: this marriage's children begin only in 1711. No child of any father named Nutt is indexed on the film for 1695–1710, and no marriage of Nutt Gujan is indexed. Leta (married 1724) would have to come from an earlier marriage of Nutt, about 1700–1705, or from another Gujan household.
  • Judgement: possible family only.
• The Malans Gujans (DGS 8126174):
  • Jacob Gujan × Cathrina Ruppi, son Marti baptised 8 Mar 1722 (6FZB-FS5Q). Malans lies next to Igis, and its register begins only in 1721, too late for Leta's baptism.
  • Later, Leda (Ledonia) Gujan × Hans Jörg (Johann Georg) Schmid had a son Nutt. Their children:
    • Margreth, 16 Nov 1786 (6FZB-85KK); buried 1861 as the wife of Peter Boner (6F88-K5LT);
    • Nutt, 19 Sep 1789 (6FZB-DND4); buried 1854, wife Marga Marty (6F88-ZDDY);
    • Elisabeth, 19 Jan 1791 (6FZB-FLT8);
    • Heinrich (born about 1793); buried 1869 (6F88-DNJQ);
    • further mother entries "Eda Gujan", "Eva Gujani" and "Cada Gujanin", showing how the index mangles Leda.
  • A Gujan family using both Leda and Nutt, next door to Igis. The film is confirmed as 8126174 (Scharans/Malans/Scheid); the surnames Boner and Marty point to Malans.
• Not ours: Andreas "Gujan/Gujar/Gujer", with children Dorothea 1700, Jacob 1702 (buried 1703) and Elssbeth 1704 (6FZT-RF63, 6FZT-1QVG, 6FZT-587X). They are on DGS 8126294, the Rheinwald and Avers registers, far from Igis. The same names as the Zizers Müller wife are a coincidence of index names, not evidence.

Negative results

• No Leta or Leda Gujan baptism was found in any film:
  • On the Luzein/St. Antönien/Küblis film, the only Le* baptisms of 1686–1710 are Lena and Leonhard.
  • On the Valzeina/Fanas film, the only Le* baptisms of 1680–1712 are Lena Wutwe (1684, 1687), although Leda is used there as a mothers' name (Leda Michlin, Leda Hagin).
• No second record of Leta's 1724 marriage exists in the Valzeina/Fanas register, which holds Anna Gujan's 1728 marriage. The only record of it is on the Igis film, "Leda Kujany", 66VW-PYWQ.
• Gujan marriages 1690–1730 in the collection: Andreas × M. Janetti 1706; Marti × Greta Wilhelmi 1713; Jacob × Urschla Chuoreti 1714; Johannes × Dorothe Baneri 1714; Andris × Geya Limmen 1714; Johannes × Greta Barbla Kuoreti 1718; Anna × Christen Täscher 1728. No Nutt, and no Leta other than her Igis entry.
