No source supports the 1897 death.
• Assessment: the Brienz (Bernese Oberland) death is irreconcilable with a woman living in Missouri in 1884; it is almost certainly a different Margaretha Bernet (the surname is common in the Bernese Oberland) grafted onto this profile. Neighbours: Rudolf Stadler 40 (Switzerland) and family next door [Christian later married Elizabeth Stadler, 1886]; Frank Eaton and Mary Dikenson before.

• Under "Pensions have been granted as follows: … In Missouri—To Oliver Massey, …" the list includes "Luzius Hegnauer" (between "John C. Johnson, Jackson Waddell" and "August Hossenlopp"). The same Missouri list also names widows and minors, but Luzius is listed as the pensioner.
• Significance: his invalid pension (app. 831,233, filed 15 Jul 1890; cert. 638,825) was granted about 20 Aug 1891. A certificate issued to him suggests he was alive in Aug 1891, which narrows his death to after that date. For Margreth, still no evidence she was alive after 1884.
