Elizabeth Stadler was born on 3 September 1864 in Switzerland and came to America in 1879, aged fourteen.1–2 Within a year her family was farming in Prairie Township, Bates County, Missouri: in June 1880 "Eliza", fifteen, was in the household of Rudolf Stadler, a Swiss-born farmer of forty, probably her father, with her sisters Louisa, Mary and Anna. Their next-door neighbours were the Hegnauers, the aging Swiss couple Luzius and Margreth with their unmarried son Christian and daughter Barbara.3

On 25 March 1886 Elizabeth, then of Papinville, married Christian Hegnauer, also of Papinville, thirteen years her senior. They took out the licence at the county seat, Butler, and were married there the same day by the probate judge; the clerk noted that "Her Father appears and gives his consent."4–5

Oregon

About 1891 or 1892 the couple moved to Oregon, the state that was to be Elizabeth's home for 55 years.1 In 1900 they were farming on the Salem and Silverton Road in Marion County, on land Christian owned; they had been married fourteen years, and Elizabeth had had no children.2 By May 1910 they had taken up a homestead in the Culver–Metolius district of central Oregon, then part of Crook County, where "Lizzie", 46, was enumerated with Christian on their farm, still childless.6 That October "C. and E. Hegnauer" sold the Salem land for $4,000.7 By 1930 they had retired to the little town of Metolius.8

Christian died at Metolius on 20 February 1935, and Elizabeth gave the particulars for his death certificate.9 That spring she was living on a farm in rural Jefferson County. By April 1940, aged seventy-five and a widow, she had gone to live with her sister Louise's family at Chehalem Center, near Newberg in Yamhill County; the census taker entered her as the head's sister-in-law, "Elizabeth Heggneuer".10–11 Metolius remained her home in name, and her obituary called her "Elizabeth Hegnauer of Metolius".1, 11 In January 1947 she was in Portland, and she had been there only a day and a half when she died, at 910 S.E. 49th Avenue, on 7 January 1947, aged 82.1 After a funeral at the Metolius Methodist church she was buried beside Christian in the Methodist Hill Cemetery at Metolius, under a shared flat granite marker.11–13 She was survived by three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Marnach of Newberg, Oregon, Mrs. Marie Herboldt of Harrison, Idaho, and Mrs. Joseph Rich of Hillsboro, Oregon.11

  • Identity: Elizabeth Stadler of Papinville, who married Christian Hegnauer in Bates County in 1886, is his wife Elizabeth of the 1900 census (born Sep 1864, Switzerland, married 14 years), "Lizzie" of the 1910 census (married 24 years), Elizabeth of the 1930 census, and the Elizabeth Hegnauer, widow of Christian, born 3 Sep 1864, who died in 1947 with her usual residence at Metolius.4, 2, 6, 8, 1 Her husband's death certificate names her as his wife and informant.9 Most of these records were read from the images in the survey of her husband's records.
  • Birth year (conflict): 3 Sep 1864 (death certificate, whose stated age computes from it, re-read on the image on 27 Sep 2026) and Sep 1864 (1900 census) against 1865 on the gravestone and Find a Grave, whose index repeats the stone's year.1, 2, 12, 13 1864 is accepted; the study's register had only "Sep 1864" and should carry 3 Sep 1864. At her marriage in March 1886 her father gave his consent, which suggests that the clerk took her to be under eighteen; that does not fit a birth in 1864, and the point is unresolved.4 The 1930 census's "age at first marriage 22" does not fit either year.8

Rich in 1920), which fits Mary and Anna.11 Rudolf Stadler is therefore her probable father, but the household has not yet been read in full and no record names him as her father.

  • 1886–1891: Nothing is known of the couple between the marriage and about 1891; her death certificate's 55 years in Oregon points to their arrival there about 1891–92.1
  • 1935 and 1940: Her 1940 census line (index only) places her at Chehalem Center, Yamhill County, as sister-in-law of the head, in a household whose indexed members are Louise Marnach, 70, wife of the head, and five people surnamed Strait and Moore, aged 24 to 1, all indexed as "son" or "daughter"; the relationships look garbled, and the head's own line is not in the index list. In 1935 she was in rural Jefferson County, Oregon, on a farm (the old family tree had standardized the place to Kansas).10 Her obituary names a sister, Mrs. Joseph Marnach of Newberg; Chehalem Center is the district around Newberg, so the head was probably Joseph Marnach and Louise probably the sister Louisa of the 1880 household.11, 3 The image should be read to confirm the head's name.
  • Informant in 1947: Mrs. Catherine Billeter [?] of 4136 N.E. 10th Avenue, Portland, perhaps a niece; the relationship is not stated.1
  • Family portrait: A studio portrait of her husband's brother Leonhard's family, shared on Ancestry, is said to have come down through a Stadler relative in Switzerland and calls Leonhard "the brother-in-law of Elizabeth", which fits her (see Leonhard's profile).
