Life story
Mary Gambler was born about 1851 in Pennsylvania, a daughter of a Swiss-born father and of Katharina Gambler, who in the 1890s was living at St. Joseph, Missouri.1–2 Her brothers and sisters, named in their mother's will, were Elizabeth (Mrs. Karrasch), Bertha, John and William Gambler.2
In 1875, at St. Joseph, Mary married Martin Hegnauer, a Swiss-born laborer from Igis, Graubünden, who had come to Missouri as a boy in 1856.3 They made their home in St. Louis, where their four children were born: Elizabeth ("Lizzie") about 1876, Margaret ("Maggie") in June 1877, Bertha in October 1878 and Martin Jr. in January 1884.3–5 In June 1880 the census taker found the family at 602 South Second Street: Martin, 32, a laborer, and Mary, 29, keeping house, with their three little daughters. Mary, he noted, could neither read nor write.1
In 1885 the family left St. Louis for Pleasant Gap Township in Bates County, where Martin's brother Leonhard had farmed since 1869. Mary lived only a few months there: she died in August 1885, aged about 34, leaving four children between one and nine years old.3 She was buried in the Prairie City Cemetery, where a stone on a "HEGNAUER" base reads "MARY HEGNAUER 1851–1885".6 Ten years later, at St. Joseph, her mother remembered in her will "the children of my deceased Daughter Mary Hegnauer viz: Lizzie, Margareth, Bertha and Martin".2

It is a late, secondary account, but its details are independently confirmed: Katharina Gambler of St. Joseph named "my deceased Daughter Mary Hegnauer" and Mary's four children in her will (1895), and the 1880 census shows Martin and Mary with a daughter Lizzie aged 4. No marriage register entry has been found yet.

- Maiden name: Gambler is proven by her mother Katharina Gambler's will (1895), which names "my deceased Daughter Mary Hegnauer" and her four children in birth order, and is independently given by her husband's obituary ("married to Mary Gambler in St. Joseph") and her daughter Maggie's death certificate ("Mary Gambler", the best reading of the handwriting).2, 3, 4 The Ancestry tree's "Marie Genmpler" and Find a Grave's "Marie Gempler" (said to be from her daughter Bertha's death certificate no. 2502, not yet seen) are probably other readings of the same name. Her father was born in Switzerland, so a Swiss original form is possible.1
- Marriage: 1875 and St. Joseph rest on her husband's obituary alone. No register entry has been found in the indexes of Buchanan County or of Missouri under any spelling tried (see Martin's profile).3
- Death and burial: No death record or notice has been found; Bates County's death register on Ancestry covers only 1883–1887 and does not index her. The Prairie City memorial names no husband, but no other Mary Hegnauer of her age is known in the county.6 FamilySearch's Find a Grave index misplaces it at Bates City, Lafayette County.7
