Maria Adank was baptised in Switzerland on 4 January 1868, the daughter of Adam Adank and Maria Hegnauer, and a granddaughter of Peter Hegnauer and Anna Berri of Igis.1 She evidently went to America with her family as a small child.

As Mary Adank she married Edmund Hellwig at Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, on 4 November 1890, when she was twenty-two; the record names her parents as Adam Adank and Maria Hegnauer.2 Her later life has not yet been traced.

Her elder sister Anna (baptised 1864) is not known to have lived to adulthood, so the Burlington bride is unlikely to be Anna under another name.1, 2
