Life story
Farmer at Pleasant Gap
Joseph M. Link was born in Missouri in September 1871, according to the census of 1900; nothing is yet known of his parents or his early life.1 In October 1895 the Butler Daily Democrat reported a marriage licence for J. M. Link and Miss Katie S. Hegnauer, of Prairie City.2 His bride was Katherine Susanna Hegnauer, known as Katie, a daughter of the Swiss-born farmer and banker Leonhard Hegnauer of Pleasant Gap Township.
In June 1900 Joseph was farming in Pleasant Gap Township with Katie and their first child, Alina. Katie's sister Mary and her husband, Fritz Hammer, were enumerated on the same census page.1 Ten years later Joseph was still farming there, and there were five children: Alina, Roland J., Ruth, Edwin and Clara.3 Two more sons, William and Joseph, were born about 1911 and 1914.4
Death
Joseph died before January 1920, when the census taker found Katie a widow, running the farm with all seven children; when and where he died has not been found.4

A licence was issued to J. M. Link and Miss Katie S. Hegnauer, of Prairie City, and reported in the Butler Daily Democrat of 23 Oct 1895. The wedding date and place have not been found. Seven children, born about 1896 to about 1914.
The Butler paper's list of marriage licences (23 Oct 1895) names the couple; a licence was normally used within days, in the county that issued it, so the marriage probably took place late in October 1895 in Bates County. The licence and its return have not been seen. The family tree gives the marriage year as 1896, taken from the years of marriage in the 1900 census (index only; not re-read).

- Identity: The J. M. Link of the licence is the Joseph M. Link of the 1900 and 1910 censuses: his wife is Katherine in both, and the couple's first child was born about 1896, within a year of the licence.2, 1, 3
- Death (open): Between about 1913 (his youngest child was born about 1914) and January 1920 (his wife a widow).4 An unsourced list of Leonhard Hegnauer's children, shared in an Ancestry member tree (RG_SM12, 2015), gives "Joseph Martin Link (1871 MO–1916 MO)". Neither the middle name Martin nor the year 1916 has been checked. Leads: the Missouri death certificates for 1913–1919 (Ancestry, "Missouri, U.S., Death Certificates, 1910–1971"; Missouri State Archives), the Reform Cemetery at Pleasant Gap, where his wife was buried, and the Butler and Appleton City papers.
