Fritz Hammer was born in Illinois about 1858, the eldest child of Anton Hammer, a farmer from Baden in Germany.1 By August 1870 the Hammers had moved to Bates County, Missouri, and were farming in Prairie City (later Pleasant Gap) Township, post office Pleasant Gap. Fritz, eleven, was the eldest of six children at home, all born in Illinois. Their nearest neighbours, in the very next house, were the Swiss family of Leonhard Hegnauer, whose daughter Mary was then three.1
Marriage
On 12 March 1885, in Bates County, Fritz married that girl next door, Mary Christina Hegnauer.2 He was known in English as Fred: in June 1892 the Butler paper noted that "C. Hegnauer and Fred and Wm. Hammer, of Prairie" had been in town,3 and the county plat book of 1895 shows "Fred Hammer" with 80 acres in Section 36 of Pleasant Gap Township, directly north of his father-in-law's farm, with a strip of his father Anton's land and the 80 acres of a "C. Hegnauer", probably Mary's brother Christian, beside them.4 In June 1900 Fritz was farming there with Mary and four children, Lydia, William L., Emily C. and Arthur. Mary's sister Katie and her husband, Joseph Link, were enumerated on the same census page.5

Later years
When Leonhard Hegnauer died in October 1916, it was "Mrs. Fred Hammer" of Rockville who gave the particulars for his death certificate, and his obituary said that both his daughters still lived in the old home community.6–7 Mary's widowed mother, Susanna, spent her last years with Mary and with her son Christian, and when she died in February 1918 Mary again gave the particulars, from Rural Route 1, Rockville.8–9 Mary died on 27 April 1920.10 Fred was still living in January 1923, when "Fred and Arthur Hammer" spent a Sunday at the Fred Stevener home together with Mary's brother Chris Hegnauer and his wife.11 When and where he died has not been found.

The family tree gives Dec 1858, probably from the 1900 census (not re-read).
In the 1870 census, taken in August 1870, "Fritz", 11, born in Illinois, is the eldest child in Anton Hammer's household, which puts his birth between August 1858 and August 1859. The family tree's Dec 1858, Illinois, carries no source in the tree but fits; it was presumably taken from the 1900 census entry attached to him, which asked for month and year of birth and has not been re-read.

Post office Pleasant Gap. "Fritz", 11, born Illinois, eldest child in the household of Anton Hammer, farmer, born Baden, with Lena [?], 22, and Emma 9, Louisa 7, Lewis 6, Caroline 4 and John 1, all born in Illinois. The next dwelling is Leonard Hegnauer's, whose daughter Mary he married in 1885.
The name, age and Illinois birth fit him, and the Hammer and Hegnauer farms still lay side by side in Section 36 of Pleasant Gap Township on the 1895 plat, where Fred Hammer held 80 acres. Image read in the survey of Leonhard Hegnauer's records.

Bates County marriage record (Missouri Marriage Records) and the Missouri Compiled Marriages index, as attached to both in the family tree; the image has not been re-read. Four children known: Lydia (about 1886), William L. (about 1888), Emily C. (about 1893) and Arthur Anton (about 1897). Mary died on 27 Apr 1920.
Two Ancestry marriage collections, the county marriage record and the compiled index, give the marriage of Fritz Hammer and Mary Christina Hegnauer on 12 Mar 1885 in Bates County; both are attached to the couple in the family tree. Their first child, Lydia, was born about 1886. The index entries and the image have not been re-read here.

"Fred Hammer 80" in Sec. 36, T39N R30W, directly north of his father-in-law "L. Hegnauer 80"; "Anton Hammer 80" and "C. Hegnauer 80" (probably his brother-in-law Christian) lay to the east (1895 plat book).
The 1895 plat of Pleasant Gap Township shows an 80-acre tract of Fred Hammer beside the farms of Leonhard Hegnauer and Anton Hammer; Fred is the usual English form of Fritz, and his wife was later "Mrs. Fred Hammer".

- Sources: His 1900 census and his marriage come from the records attached to him in the Ancestry tree; the images have not been re-read. The 1870 census, the 1895 plat, the 1916 and 1918 death certificates and the newspaper items were read on screen during the surveys of his wife's parents' and aunt's records.
- Name: Fritz (1870 census; the name in the family tree) and Fred (1892 newspaper, 1895 plat, "Mrs. Fred Hammer" in 1916, 1923 newspaper) are one man: Fritz is the German familiar form of Friedrich, and the Fred Hammer of the plat held land beside Anton Hammer and Leonhard Hegnauer, as Fritz had lived beside them in 1870.1, 4 An unsourced list of Leonhard Hegnauer's children in an Ancestry member tree (RG_SM12, 2015) calls him "Frederick C. Hammer (1858 IL–1942 MO)". The middle initial and the death year are unverified.
- Parents: Anton Hammer, farmer, born in Baden, is his father by the 1870 census.1 The same family story names Anton Hammer (1838–1908) and "Mary Grob (1847 IL–1919 MO)" as his parents; a woman born in 1847 cannot have been the mother of a son born in 1858, and the Lena of 22 in Anton's 1870 household was too young as well, so Fritz's mother was probably Anton's first wife, who has not been identified. Leads: the 1860 census of Illinois for Anton Hammer; Anton's probate (Bates County, about 1908).
- "Wm. Hammer" in 1892: A grown William Hammer was with Fred in 1892, when Fritz's son William L. was about four, so he was probably a brother or other relative of Fritz, not his son.3
- Children: Four children are in the 1900 census. The number Mary had borne by 1900 (the census's "mother of" column) has not been read; it would show whether others died young.
