Roland J. Link was born in Missouri about 1901, the second known child and eldest son of Joseph M. Link and Katherine Susanna "Katie" Hegnauer.1 His mother was a daughter of the Swiss-born farmer Leonhard Hegnauer and his wife Susanna Hirschi, of Pleasant Gap Township, Bates County.2

Roland grew up on his parents' farm in Pleasant Gap Township, where he was at home in 1910 with his sisters Alina, Ruth and Clara and his brother Edwin.1 His father died before 1920. In January of that year Roland, about eighteen, was working as a laborer and living with his widowed mother and his six brothers and sisters, the eldest son at home.3 He was no longer in his mother's household in 1930, and his later life has not been traced.

    Probably in Pleasant Gap Township, Bates County, where his parents farmed.

    He is a son in his parents' household in 1910 and in his mother's in 1920 (index entries attached to him in the family tree). The tree's birth year, 1901, carries no source in the tree and was presumably worked out from his census ages, which have not been re-read. It fits a child born between Alina (about 1896) and Ruth (about 1905) and after the June 1900 census, where he does not appear.
