Alina Link was born in Missouri about 1896, the eldest known child of Joseph M. Link and Katherine Susanna "Katie" Hegnauer, who had taken out their marriage licence in October 1895.1–2 Her mother was a daughter of the Swiss-born farmer Leonhard Hegnauer and his wife Susanna Hirschi, of Pleasant Gap Township, Bates County.3

Alina grew up on her parents' farm in Pleasant Gap Township, where the census found her in 1900 as the only child, and in 1910 as the eldest of five: Alina, Roland, Ruth, Edwin and Clara.1, 4 Her father had died by January 1920, when she was at home with her widowed mother and six younger brothers and sisters.5 She stayed. In 1930 she was single, working as a laborer, and in 1940 she was still at home on the farm with her mother, her sister Clara and her brothers William and Joseph.6–7 What became of her after 1940 has not been found.
