Life story
Lotta Alice Donnell was born on 3 January 1890 in Indiana, the elder daughter of George Johnson Donnell, a Presbyterian minister born in Florida, and Alice Juanita Johnson, and she died at Tacoma, Washington, on 5 April 1973.1–4 She married Robert Lucius Hegnauer in 1910 and was the mother of his two sons. After their divorce in 1930 she made her own way in welfare work, first in Minneapolis in the years of the Depression and from 1944 in Tacoma, where she spent the rest of her life.5–9
Indiana and Missouri
Lotta's obituary gives her birthplace as Newburgh, a town on the Ohio River in Warrick County, which was very probably also her mother's birthplace; no record of Lotta's birth has been found.9–10 Her sister, Faustine, was born about five years after her. In 1900 the family was living at Brookville, in Franklin County, Indiana, where ten-year-old Lotta was at school.3
Later the family moved to Missouri. Lotta attended the Appleton City Academy in St. Clair County, and there she met a fellow student, Robert Lucius Hegnauer. They graduated together, and "it was here that the love affair had its beginning," a Marshall newspaper later wrote.11 By 1910 the Donnells lived on College Street in Marshall, Saline County, in the part of the town called the College Addition. Lotta, twenty and entered by the census taker as "Lottie", had spent the winter of 1909–10 as a student at Missouri Valley College.11–12 The college, founded by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, had opened at Marshall in September 1889; the town had won it with a bid that included cash for the endowment and the building, and lots and land in its College Addition.13
Marriage and family
On Tuesday, 9 August 1910, at nine in the morning, Lotta married Robert at her parents' home in the College Addition, and her father performed the ceremony.5, 11 The Marshall Republican called the bride "a very pleasant, cultured and sensible young lady". The couple left on the 11:15 train that Tuesday for Appleton City, and after a visit there they were to return to Urbana, Illinois, where Robert was studying agriculture at the University of Illinois.11 In October 1911 they were living at 1111 West Stoughton Street, and Lotta, as "Mrs. Robert L. Hegnauer", was collecting the names of other students' wives for the Dames' Club.14 She studied music at the university herself, as a special student, in 1912–13.15
By 1916 the family had settled at Wells, in Faribault County, Minnesota, where Robert was teaching; the university's directory of that year lists her there, "at home", in its geographical section.15–16 Their sons were born there: Robert Lucius Jr. on 25 January 1916, and Leonard Donnell, who was given her maiden name, on 4 October 1919.17–18 On 9 May 1920 Leonard was baptised in the Presbyterian church at Alden, in neighbouring Freeborn County; the register names his parents as "Robert L. & Lotta Hegnauer".19 The 1920 census found the family in their own house at Wells, where Robert was then a cattle buyer.20
Minneapolis
By 1930 the family had moved to Minneapolis and were renting a house at 4849 Ewing Avenue South; the census gives Lotta's occupation as teacher.6, 21 That November a Faribault County court granted a divorce in the case of "Hegnauer vs. Hegnauer", very probably theirs.7 Lotta stayed in Minneapolis. From about this time she called herself Lotta D. Hegnauer, keeping her maiden name as her middle name.8, 21–22
In October 1931 Lotta was on the staff of the Family Welfare Association, directing the emergency clothes station it ran in the Citizen's Aid Building. There women were paid by the hour to mend and remake used clothing, and since late August more than 1,500 garments had gone to needy families.8 The Association was the largest private agency giving cash relief in Minneapolis, and the Depression had swamped it: from the autumn of 1930 the number of unemployed people asking it for help rose at an alarming pace, and in January 1931 the jobless in the city were estimated at as many as 35,000.23 The 1932 city directory lists Lotta as a visitor, living at 4312 Linden Hills Boulevard.22
Her parents had also come to Minneapolis, about 1925. Her mother died at their home, 4208 West 44th Street, on 12 June 1935. Her father died on 19 July 1936 at the home of his sister in Columbia, Tennessee. Both funerals were arranged at the house on West 44th Street, with burial in Hillside Cemetery.4, 10 An obituary printed in Tennessee, evidently her father's, named "Mrs. Lotta Hegnauer of Minneapolis" and her two sons, the "grandchildren Lucius and Donnell Hegnauer of Minneapolis".24

By 1937 Lotta was working as a home economist.25 In April 1940 she was renting a home at 516 University Avenue S.E. with her younger son, who was a student at the University of Minnesota. She had completed four years of college and had earned $1,320 the year before.18, 26 When Leonard registered for the draft that autumn, he gave her address as 4208 West 44th Street, her parents' old home.18 In 1944 she was still a home economist, living at 1812 Bryant Avenue South. Her elder son, then in the Navy, and his wife, Adelaide, also lived in the city.27
Tacoma
In 1944 Lotta moved to Tacoma, Washington, where she spent the rest of her life.9 She worked as a social worker. The 1945 directory lists her at 2420 North 21st Street, and by 1949 she was living at Dash Point, a waterfront community northeast of Tacoma.28–29 In April 1950 the census taker found her in the household of Berenice E. Burger, 46, who was also a social worker. Lotta, 59 and divorced, was a children's worker for the Pierce County welfare department, and the census lists her as Berenice's "partner".30 Lotta was a caseworker in 1956, still at Dash Point.31 She retired from the Children's Home Society of Washington, the employer named on her death certificate.1, 9 The Society had been finding homes in Washington for orphaned children since 1896, placing them with families rather than in orphanages, and it became the largest private child-welfare organisation in the state.32
She belonged to Omicron Nu, a society founded in 1912 to recognise outstanding scholarship among students of home economics, and to Pi Lambda Theta, founded at the University of Missouri in 1910 as an honour society for women in education.9, 33–34 She was also a member of the American Association of Social Workers and of the National Retired Teachers' Association, and she attended the Longview Community Church.9
Her younger son, Leonard, died at St. Paul on 5 October 1950, the day after his thirty-first birthday, leaving a wife and two sons. His death notice listed among his survivors "mother, Mrs. Lotta Hegnauer", and he was buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.35–36
Lotta's last home was at 3717 Fawcett Avenue South, Tacoma. She died of cancer at Doctors Hospital in Tacoma on Thursday, 5 April 1973, aged eighty-three.1, 9, 37 Private services were set for Saturday, 7 April, in the Brookside Chapel, with Dr. Robert Warren officiating.38 She was cremated, and her ashes were placed in New Tacoma Cemetery at University Place, where a flat granite marker reads simply LOTTA D. HEGNAUER, 1890 1973.1, 39 She was survived by her son Robert of Kelso, Washington, by her sister, Mrs. Faustine Clements of Ojai, California, and by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.9 Berenice Burger, who died in 1998, is buried in the same cemetery.40

Her Washington death certificate (1973; informant her son Robert L. Hegnauer) gives 3 Jan 1890 in Indiana, and the Social Security Death Index gives 3 Jan 1890. The 1900 census gives Jan 1890 in Indiana, and her ages in 1910 (20), 1930 (40) and 1940 (50) fit; the 1950 census age, 59, is a year short. Every census and the death certificate give Indiana. The only town named in any record is Newburgh, Ind., in her 1973 obituary, whose informant is not known. Newburgh is probable, because her mother's obituary gives her mother's birthplace as "Newbury", Ind., probably the same town, and her mother's brothers lived at neighbouring Evansville, but it is not proven, so the place is recorded as Indiana. The Brookville, Franklin County, birthplace in family trees is where the family lived in 1900, not a recorded birthplace.

That she and Robert were divorced is certain. She gave her own status as divorced in the 1940 census; she is divorced in the 1950 census and on her death certificate; and Robert remarried on 22 Nov 1930 (see his profile). The date and county rest on one newspaper report that gives no given names. It is attributed to them because Hegnauer is a rare surname; they are the only Hegnauer couple known in Faribault County, where they had lived until at least 1920; they were still married in April 1930; and Robert remarried two days after the report. The date and county are probable; the plaintiff and the terms are unknown.

- Sources: Her marriage licence and wedding notice, the 1916 university directory, the 1931 Tribune article, her father's Minneapolis obituary, the 1944 directory page, her death certificate, her obituary and her funeral notice were read on the images; her mother's obituary is known from a clipping shared in a family tree. Her censuses (1900–1950) and most directory entries are index entries. Her father's Tennessee obituary of 1936 has been read only in FamilySearch's machine transcription.24 The historical background is from the Historical Foundation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Minnesota History, HistoryLink.org and the archives of Michigan State University and the University of Chicago.
- Identity: The records are linked as one woman as follows. (1) In 1900 and 1910 Lotta, born Jan 1890 in Indiana, is the daughter of George and Alice J. Donnell, with her sister Faustine.3, 12 (2) In 1910 she married Robert L. Hegnauer at Marshall; her father, Rev. G. J. Donnell, performed the marriage.5, 11 (3) The 1916 university directory lists her as Mrs. Lotta Alice (Mrs. R. L.) - Name: She is Lotta Alice at her marriage and in the 1916 directory, Lotta A. in 1920, and "Lottie" in the 1910 and 1940 censuses. From 1930 she used her maiden name as a middle name, Lotta D. (Donnell) Hegnauer, in directories, the 1950 census and at her death. She kept the surname Hegnauer after her divorce. The 1900 census index reads "Lotta M", probably a misreading of A. Her mother's 1935 obituary misprints her surname as "Hagnauer".
- Birth date and place: The date, 3 Jan 1890, comes from her death certificate (informant her son) and the Social Security Death Index; the 1900 census gives Jan 1890.1, 2, 3 Indiana is certain: every census and the death certificate agree. The town is not proven. The only record naming one is her 1973 obituary, which gives Newburgh, Ind.; its informant is unknown.9 Newburgh, in Warrick County on the Ohio next to Evansville, is probable: her mother's obituary gives her mother's birthplace as "Newbury", Ind., probably Newburgh, and her mother's brothers lived at Evansville in 1935.10 Family trees, and the WikiTree profile as first entered, give Brookville, Franklin County. That is where the family lived in 1900, when Lotta was ten, and no record makes it her birthplace. No Indiana birth record has been found. The Warrick County birth register for 1890, if it survives, is worth searching, and so are the records of the Presbyterian congregation her father served that year (not yet identified).
- Parents: Her death certificate names her father as George Johnson Donnell and gives her mother's maiden name as Alice Juanita Johnson.1 Her mother's obituary names her brothers Charles and Robert Johnson and her sister Mrs. Rose Strong, which supports Johnson.10 A member tree calls her mother "Alice Johnston Garrett". The Garrett is unexplained (possibly an earlier married name) and no record supports it. Her father's age at his death, 81 in July 1936, points to a birth about 1855; the 1900 census gives Jul 1857.4, 3
- Marriage date: The Saline County licence return and the Marshall Republican ("Tuesday", i.e. 9 Aug) agree on 9 Aug 1910.5, 11 The Newspapers.com Marriage Index gives 16 Aug 1910; that is an extraction error and is not used.
- Divorce (the fact certain; date, county and plaintiff from one report): That the marriage ended in divorce is certain. She gave her own status as divorced in 1940, and Robert remarried on 22 Nov 1930 (see his profile).26 The date and county come only from the Courier-Sentinel's list of cases at the Faribault County court term, 20 Nov 1930: "Hegnauer vs. Hegnauer—Divorce granted plaintiff".7 It gives no given names and does not say who brought the suit. In April 1930 the couple were living in Minneapolis, not Faribault County, and Lotta stayed in Minneapolis, so the suit may have been brought on Robert's return to Wells or on the couple's earlier residence there. The divorce file of the Faribault County district court should settle the plaintiff, the decree date, the grounds and the custody of the sons. The analysis is set out in full on Robert's profile.
- Her sons in 1936: The Tennessee obituary of 1936, read only in FamilySearch's machine transcription, names "Mrs. Lotta Hegnauer of Minneapolis" and "grandchildren Lucius and Donnell Hegnauer of Minneapolis". Her sons were Robert Lucius, who went by Lucius as a boy (see his profile), and Leonard Donnell, and the deceased is evidently her father, who died at Columbia, Tennessee, on 19 Jul 1936.24, 4 The newspaper, its date and page, and which of five Full-Text images found together it is, remain to be identified.
- "(wid Wm)" in the 1944 directory: The Minneapolis directory of 1944, whose page was read, prints "Hegnauer Lotta D (wid Wm) home economist".27 This is not evidence of a second marriage. No husband William is known. Robert L. Hegnauer was alive until 1969, and she is divorced in the 1940 and 1950 censuses and on her death certificate.26, 30, 1 Directory canvassers sometimes listed divorced women as widows, and "Wm" may be a canvasser's or printer's error. No person has been created for it. Similarly, Ancestry's index of the 1937 directory gives her a spouse "Robert"; the image has not been read, and the entry may simply repeat an older listing.25
- The household with Berenice E. Burger: In April 1950 Lotta lived in the household of Berenice E. Burger, a social worker, and the census gives her relationship to the head as "Partner".30 That is the census's own word. Enumerators of the period used it for an unrelated adult who shared a home with the head, and it does not by itself describe the nature of their relationship. It is recorded here as written, with no further interpretation. Lotta was divorced (1940 and 1950 censuses; death certificate), and no marriage between them is recorded. None was possible in their lifetimes: Washington allowed two women to marry only after its voters approved same-sex marriage in November 2012.41 The Ancestry tree links them as "Friend". Whether the shared household continued after 1950 has not been checked: Lotta was at Dash Point in 1949 and 1956,29, 31 and Berenice's own directory entries have not been searched. Berenice (born 1904 in Nebraska, according to the family tree) died in 1998 and is buried in New Tacoma Cemetery, like Lotta.40, 39
- 1950 residence: Ancestry's index of her 1950 census entry gives only Pierce County. FamilySearch's index of the same entry gives Dash Point, where the 1949 and 1956 directories also list her.30, 29, 31 The image, which should give the enumeration district's description and the street, has not been read, so the fact is placed in the county.
- Records of her sons attached to her: The Social Security Applications and Claims Index entry under her name is from her son Robert Jr.'s application. It shows her maiden name, Lotta Donnell, and that she was his mother, but nothing about her own birth.17 Leonard's WWII draft card names her and gives her address in the autumn of 1940, and nothing else about her.18 No Social Security application entry of her own was found; her number was issued in Washington in 1956–57.2
- Education and teaching: She reported four years of college in 1940.26 Her known study, at Missouri Valley College (1909–10) and as a special student in music at the University of Illinois (1912–13), does not add up to that. Her memberships in Omicron Nu (home economics) and Pi Lambda Theta (education) suggest later university study, perhaps in Minneapolis, which has not been traced.9, 33, 34 The 1930 census index gives her occupation as teacher, and she belonged to the National Retired Teachers' Association, but no record of where she taught has been found.6, 9
- Cause of death: Her death certificate gives metastatic cancer, the primary in the colon; her physician had attended her since May 1966.1
- Not her: A Lotta M. Hegnauer, born about 1914 in Missouri, daughter of Leonard L. and Anna K. Hegnauer, lived in Prairie Township, Bates County, Missouri, in 1920. Several Ohio records of a Lotta (M.) Hegnauer (a 1936 birth in Holmes County, a 1959 marriage in Summit County) are of a different family.
