Adelaide Louise Curtis was born on 31 May 1920 at Montevideo, the county seat of Chippewa County in western Minnesota, a daughter of Arthur Garfield Curtis and Hazel Lucile Cook, and she died at Longview, Washington, on 19 April 1995.1–3 For more than forty years she was the wife of Robert Lucius Hegnauer Jr., and she was the mother of his three sons. She spent the last forty-nine years of her life in and around Longview and Kelso, in Cowlitz County, southwestern Washington.4–6

Chippewa County

Adelaide's father had been born in Indiana and her mother in Nebraska.7 The family had only just come to Minnesota. In January 1920, four months before Adelaide was born, the census taker found them renting a house on East Fourth Street in Spencer, Clay County, Iowa, where her father was farming. With them were her older sisters Verna, Dorothy and Madge and her brother Arthur Nathan, all born in Iowa.7–8 Adelaide was the fifth of the six children known; her youngest sister, Inez, was born in 1929.9 Montevideo, her birthplace, had been platted in 1870 where the valleys of the Minnesota and Chippewa rivers meet. It took its name from the capital of Uruguay, a name its founders thought well suited to the view from its heights.10

By April 1930 the Curtises were living in Maynard, in Chippewa County, a railway village platted in 1887 by a superintendent of the Great Northern railway.7, 10 Nine-year-old Adelaide was at school, and at home with her were her sister Madge, fourteen, her brother Arthur, eleven, and the baby, Inez. Her two eldest sisters were no longer in the household.7 Madge died in June 1931, still in her teens, when Adelaide was eleven.7, 11 Adelaide went on to complete four years of high school, and in 1935 she was still living in rural Chippewa County.4 Her parents stayed at Maynard, where in 1940 her father, then fifty-nine, was working as a carpenter on a government construction project.12

Minneapolis

By April 1940 Adelaide had moved to Minneapolis and was the wife of Robert, four years her senior. They rented a home on South Aldrich Avenue for $25 a month. Robert was a custodian at an auto garage, and Adelaide had worked 49 hours that week as a waitress in a cafe.4 Their divorce certificate, drawn up forty-two years later, gives the date of their marriage as 11 September 1940, in Hennepin County, but the census had already listed them as husband and wife that April, and the record of the wedding has not been found.4–5

In October 1940, when Robert registered for the draft, the couple were living at 516 University Avenue S.E., and he named "Mrs. Adelaide L. Hegnauer, wife" as the person who would always know his address.13 Their first son, Robert Curtis, was born in Hennepin County on 18 April 1942.14 While Robert was in the Navy, the 1944 Minneapolis directory listed "Robt L jr (Adelaide L) USN" at 3308 19th Avenue South.15 Her parents had come to the city too: the same year's directory lists Arthur G. Curtis, a factory worker, and Hazel L. Curtis at 2740 Aldrich Avenue.16 By October 1944 her Social Security record gave her name as Adelaide Louise Hegnauer, with her parents, Arthur G. Curtis and Hazel L. Cook.2

Cowlitz County

After the war the family moved west to Cowlitz County, in southwestern Washington, where the Cowlitz River meets the Columbia. Her obituary says she lived in the area for forty-nine years, which dates the move to about 1946.6 Longview, where Robert found work, had been built in the 1920s as a planned city around the Long-Bell Lumber Company's mill, and by 1950 it had some 20,000 people; Kelso, the county seat, lay across the Cowlitz River from it.17–19 In April 1950 the census found Adelaide, twenty-nine, keeping house outside the towns, on a place of three acres or more, with Robert, a machinist in the paper industry, and their eight-year-old son.20 Robert and Adelaide had three sons in all.5–6 In 1960 the Kelso directory listed Robert at Carrolls, a rural community just south of Kelso, working for Longview Fibre, the paper company at Longview.21

Adelaide's parents also came west. Her mother came to the Carrolls area in 1952.22 Her father died at the Cowlitz Valley Nursing Home in Longview on 8 March 1966; his home was then 202 Ross Road, Kelso, and his body was taken back to Montevideo, Minnesota.23 Hazel Curtis died in a Longview hospital on 28 January 1978, aged eighty-six, and her funeral was held in Minnesota, at the Maynard Presbyterian Church. Adelaide, of 118 Ross Road, Kelso, gave the particulars for her mother's death certificate, and her mother's obituary lists "Adelaid Hegnauer of Kelso" first among her four surviving daughters.22, 24

Kelso

Adelaide and Robert's marriage ended after more than forty years. On Robert's petition, the Superior Court of Cowlitz County dissolved it on 4 March 1982; both then gave their address as 118 Ross Road, Kelso.5, 25 Adelaide kept the name Hegnauer and stayed in the county. Address directories place her at 1153 16th Avenue in Longview and at 2500 Allen Street in Kelso, and from at least 1993 at 2431 Kingfisher Lane, Kelso, which was her home for the rest of her life.3, 26–28

Besides her four years of high school, Adelaide had completed two years of college.3–4 In her later years she was the bookkeeper for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Longview, work she kept up until early 1995.3, 6 RSVP, a federal programme begun in 1971, matched older volunteers with local organisations that needed their help.29 She belonged to the Church of the Risen Saviour, where she took part in Bible study groups, and her favourite pastimes were quilting and gardening.3, 6

Adelaide died early on 19 April 1995, aged seventy-four, at St. John's Medical Center in Longview.3, 30–31 She was cremated the next day at Park Hill Crematorium in Vancouver, Washington,3 and a memorial service was set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, 22 April, at the Church of the Risen Saviour, 1170 17th Avenue, Longview. Gifts in her memory were invited for RSVP and for the church.6, 32 She left three sons, the eldest of them Robert, then of Tacoma; in the obituary's words, "her adoptive mother, Berenice Burger of Longview"; three sisters, Verna Potter of Montevideo, Dorothy Harbour of Maynard and Inez Tallard of Milwaukie, Oregon; eleven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Her sister Madge and her brother Arthur had died before her.6 Her eldest son, Robert Curtis Hegnauer, died in Pierce County on 12 September 2021.33

    Minnesota birth certificate no. 1920-05555, Chippewa County (index; the certificate has not been viewed). In January 1920, four months earlier, her parents were living at Spencer, Clay County, Iowa.

    The Minnesota Historical Society's index of state birth certificates gives Adelaide Louise Curtis, born 31 May 1920 in Chippewa County, mother's maiden name Cook, certificate 1920-05555: an index to a record made at the time. Her own Social Security record (Oct 1944) gives 31 May 1920 at "Montevideo C", Minnesota, and names her parents, Arthur G. Curtis and Hazel L. Cook. Her death certificate gives 31 May 1920 at Montevideo, Minn., and the 1982 divorce certificate (5-31-20, Minn.), the SSDI and her obituary (Montevideo) agree; her age in 1930 (9) fits. The town is named only in these later records, which all agree, and Montevideo is the seat of Chippewa County. The certificate itself has not been viewed.

    Date and county as given on their 1982 divorce certificate, the only record found that states them. No marriage record has been found. The April 1940 census already lists them as husband and wife, and two family trees give 1939 without a source (see Research Notes). Divorced 4 Mar 1982, Cowlitz County, Washington.

    The only record that states the date and place is the certificate of dissolution of 1982, which gives the place of marriage as Hennepin Co., Minn., and the date as 9-11-40. It was completed 42 years after the event, on the husband's petition, so it is secondary evidence for the marriage. It conflicts with the 1940 census, taken in April 1940 with Robert as the informant, which already lists Adelaide as his wife and both as married. His draft card of 16 Oct 1940 names her as his wife. The Minnesota Official Marriage System has no marriage for the couple. The date is recorded as the certificate gives it; the conflict is unresolved.

Research notes

  • Sources: The index of her Minnesota birth certificate, the censuses of 1920–1950 and the address indexes are index entries. Her husband's draft card, the 1944 directory page, the 1982 divorce certificate, her parents' death certificates, her own death certificate and her obituary were read on the images; her mother's obituary is known from a clipping shared in a family tree.   • Identity: The records are linked as one woman as follows. (1) The index of Minnesota birth certificates gives Adelaide Louise Curtis, born 31 May 1920 in Chippewa County, mother's maiden name Cook.1 (2) In 1930 Adelaide L. Curtis, 9, born in Minnesota, is the daughter of Arthur G. and Hazel L. Curtis at Maynard, Chippewa County.7 (3) In April 1940 Adelaide, wife of Robert L. Hegnauer Jr. in Minneapolis, gave her 1935 residence as rural Chippewa County; her husband's draft card of Oct 1940 and the 1944 Minneapolis directory name her as Adelaide L.4, 13, 15 (4) The birth index entry of her eldest son (1942) names his mother Adelaide Louise Hegnauer; FamilySearch's index of the same entry gives her maiden name, Curtis.14 (5) Her Social Security record, in the name Adelaide Louise Hegnauer by Oct 1944, gives her birth on 31 May 1920 at Montevideo and her parents as Arthur G. Curtis and Hazel L. Cook.2 (6) The 1950 census has Adelaide, 29, born in Minnesota, with Robert and their son Robert in Cowlitz County.20 (7) Her mother's 1978 obituary names her daughter "Adelaid Hegnauer of Kelso".22 (8) The 1982 divorce certificate gives Adelaide L. Hegnauer, maiden name Curtis, born 5-31-20 in Minnesota.5 (9) Address indexes give Adelaide Hegnauer, born 31 May 1920, at 2431 Kingfisher Lane, Kelso.27, 26 (10) Her death certificate gives her birth on 31 May 1920 at Montevideo, her parents, Arthur G. Curtis and Hazel L. Cook, and the Kingfisher Lane address, and her obituary gives the same birth date, birthplace and parents.3, 6 Her Social Security record, the SSDI and the death certificate carry the same Social Security number.2, 31, 3
  • Name: She was Adelaide Louise Curtis at birth and Adelaide L. Curtis in 1930.1, 7 After her marriage she was Adelaide Louise Hegnauer in her Social Security record and on her death certificate, Adelaide L. Hegnauer in most other records, and Adelaide Hegnauer in the SSDI.2, 3, 31 She kept the surname after the 1982 divorce. No later marriage has been found: a search of the Washington marriage records for Adelaide Hegnauer found none, and her death certificate gives her status as divorced.3 Forms that are not names she used: "Adelaid" (a misprint in her mother's obituary), "Adelaide C Hegnauer" (a commercial address index; the C is presumably for Curtis and is in no original record), "Adeliade" (the title of a photograph in a family tree) and "Adelaide L Hegnauer Adelaide" (Newspapers.com's machine-extracted obituary index).22, 27, 6
  • Birth: The date, 31 May 1920, is in every record that gives one: the index of her birth certificate, her Social Security record, the 1982 divorce certificate, the SSDI, the address indexes, her death certificate and her obituary.1, 2, 5, 31, 27, 3, 6 The county, Chippewa, comes from the birth-certificate index, which is contemporary; the town, Montevideo, from her Social Security record, her death certificate and her obituary. The certificate itself (Minnesota no. 1920-05555) has not been viewed. Her parents were at Spencer, Clay County, Iowa, when the census was taken in January 1920;8 Spencer was their home before she was born, not hers. Ancestry's Washington death index gives her birth as "abt 1921", a year computed from her age at death.30
  • Age in 1940: The 1940 census gives her age as 21. Her birth date, which the birth index, her Social Security record, the divorce certificate and the death certificate all give as 31 May 1920, made her 19 in April 1940. Her husband was the informant for the household.4 The census age is recorded as written; the birth date is not in doubt.
  • Marriage to Robert (conflict): No record of the marriage has been found. The only statement of the date and place is the 1982 divorce certificate: Hennepin Co., Minn., 9-11-40, that is, 11 Sep 1940.5 It was completed 42 years after the event, on the husband's petition, so it is secondary evidence for the marriage. It conflicts with the 1940 census: in April 1940 Robert, the informant, gave both of them as married, with Adelaide as his wife.4 His draft card of 16 Oct 1940 names her as his wife, which fits either date.13 WikiTree (as found in Sept 2026) gives 11 Sep 1939 at Minneapolis, and a family tree on Ancestry gives 1939, both without a source. A 1939 date would fit the census, and it looks like the certificate's day and month with another year, but no record supports it. Searches so far: the Minnesota Official Marriage System has no marriage for the couple (searched under Hegnauer in all counties, and under Adelaide Curtis); Ancestry's and FamilySearch's marriage records found nothing; a Newspapers.com search for Hegnauer in Minnesota, 1939–1941, found 49 items, of which the two opened (Wells Mirror, 21 Sep 1939 and 26 Sep 1940) concern her father-in-law, and the three Hennepin County items have not been opened. The marriage is recorded as the certificate gives it, and the conflict is unresolved. The Hennepin County marriage records for Sept 1939 and Sept 1940 are the next place to look.
  • Arrival in Cowlitz County (45 or 49 years): Her death certificate gives 45 years in Cowlitz County, which points to about 1950; her obituary gives 49 years in the local area, which points to about 1946.3, 6 Her husband was already a machinist at Longview in the 1948 directory,17 and the family was in the county at the census of April 1950,20 so the move was before 1950, and the obituary's figure fits the records better. The certificate's informant was a son; the obituary's is not known.
  • Addresses after 1982: The addresses at 1153 16th Avenue, Longview, and 2500 Allen Street, Kelso, come from an undated commercial index. They are placed between the divorce (1982) and 1993, and their order is not known.26 The same index gives, for 1995, the mailing address of the informant on her death certificate, a son (living); it was not her home and is not recorded here.26, 3 Her Kingfisher Lane address is in the indexes in 1993 and 1994, on her death certificate and in her obituary.26, 28, 3, 6
  • Place of death (corrected): The family tree and this WikiTree profile gave her place of death as Kelso. Kelso was her home. Her death certificate places her death at St. John's Medical Center in Longview, and Washington's death index gives Longview.3, 30 The SSDI's Kelso is her last residence.31
  • Cause of death and disposition: Her death certificate gives small cell lung cancer, of 22 months' duration, with no autopsy; her obituary says she died of cancer.3, 6 She was cremated on 20 Apr 1995 at Park Hill Crematorium, Vancouver, Washington, through the Heritage Cremation Society of Portland, Oregon.3 Where her ashes were placed is not recorded, and Find a Grave has no memorial for her (searched for Adelaide Hegnauer).
  • "Her adoptive mother, Berenice Burger of Longview": Her obituary names Berenice Burger as her adoptive mother.6 Every other record names her natural parents, Arthur Garfield Curtis and Hazel Lucile Cook: the index of her birth certificate (mother's maiden name Cook), the 1930 census, her own Social Security record, her mother's obituary of 1978, which lists her among Hazel's daughters, and her death certificate.1, 7, 2, 22, 3 No record of an adoption has been found, and the obituary does not explain the word, so it is recorded here as the obituary gives it and is not treated as a parent-and-child relationship. The study knows one woman of the name: Berenice E. Burger, born about 1904 in Nebraska, a supervising social worker with the Pierce County welfare department, in whose household at Dash Point, Pierce County, Adelaide's mother-in-law, Lotta D. Hegnauer, also a social worker, was living in 1950 (see Lotta's profile).34 According to the family tree and Find a Grave, she died in 1998 and is buried in New Tacoma Cemetery, like Lotta.35 The uncommon spelling Berenice and the tie to Adelaide's husband's family make it probable that the woman of the obituary is the same person, but this is not proven: her residence in 1995 has not been checked, and no record links her to Adelaide directly.
  • Brothers and sisters: Her parents' children, as far as the records show, were Verna (born about 1910 in Iowa; later Mrs. Potter of Montevideo), Dorothy (born about 1911 in Iowa; later Mrs. Harbour of Maynard), Madge (born about 1915 in Iowa), Arthur Nathan (born 1918 in Iowa), Adelaide (1920) and Inez (born 11 Jul 1929 in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota; later Mrs. Tallard of Sandy and Milwaukie, Oregon).8, 7, 9, 22, 6 The birth years of Verna, Dorothy and Madge are computed from their ages in the censuses of 1920 and 1930. Madge died in Chippewa County on 9 Jun 1931 (Minnesota death certificate 002305, known from the index), which is why she is not among her mother's survivors in 1978; the 1995 obituary still calls her Madge Curtis.11, 22, 6 Verna's middle name is Violet: the Iowa birth index of her birth, the Minnesota birth index of a daughter's birth and her funeral home's obituary index all give Verna Violet, so a member tree's "Lillian" is wrong (see her profile). The other middle names in family trees are not yet confirmed by records: Dorothy "Lucille"; Madge "Maxine", which fits the "Madge M." of 1930 and the death index; and Inez "Larayne", where her birth index reads "Lorraine"; the Oregon death index also gives Inez Larayne Tallard, so Larayne is the form she used as an adult.7, 9, 11 The sibling list on WikiTree (as found in Sept 2026) gives Dorothy the surname Cook, her mother's maiden name, and omits Madge.
  • Children: The 1982 divorce certificate records three children born to Robert and Adelaide.5 The eldest, Robert Curtis Hegnauer, was born on 18 Apr 1942 in Hennepin County and died on 12 Sep 2021 in Pierce County, Washington.14, 33 The other two sons are living and are not named here.
