Life story
Florida, Tennessee and Indiana
George Johnson Donnell was born in Florida in July 1857, according to the 1900 census; his obituary, which gives his age as 81 in July 1936, points to about 1855.1–2 His family had ties to Tennessee: when he died, his sister, Mrs. Annie Galloway, was living at Columbia, and a brother, Kerr, at Macon.2
On 4 May 1887, in Warrick County on the Ohio River in southern Indiana, George married Alice Juanita Johnson of Newburgh.3–4 Their elder daughter, Lotta Alice, was born in Indiana on 3 January 1890, and a second daughter, Faustine, about five years later.1, 5 George was a Freemason, a member of the lodge at New Washington, Indiana.2 In 1900 the family was living at Brookville, in Franklin County, Indiana.1
A Presbyterian ministry
George spent his working life as a Presbyterian minister, and the family moved with his pastorates. By 1910 they lived on College Street in Marshall, Missouri, where the census gives his occupation as minister and where Lotta studied at Missouri Valley College.6–7 On 9 August 1910, at nine in the morning, he married Lotta to Robert Lucius Hegnauer in the family home in the College Addition of Marshall, signing the return as "G. J. Donnell, Minister of the Gospel".7–8 In 1920 he was the pastor at Claremont, in Dodge County, southern Minnesota, where Faustine, still at home, was teaching school.9 His obituary records that he had served in the Mankato presbytery in Minnesota, and later in the La Crosse presbytery of the Synod of Wisconsin, as its moderator and stated clerk. His last pastorate was at Neillsville, Wisconsin, and when he retired he was chairman of the synod's Christian education committee.2
Retirement near Minneapolis
About 1925 George and Alice moved to the Minneapolis area.4 In 1930 they were living with Faustine, a teacher and the head of the household, in the village of Morningside on the city's western edge.10 Alice died at their home, 4208 West 44th Street, on 12 June 1935, aged 73, and was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Minneapolis.4
George died a year later, on Sunday 19 July 1936, aged 81, at the home of his sister Annie Galloway at Columbia, Tennessee. The funeral was held at the house on West 44th Street on the afternoon of Thursday 23 July, and he too was buried in Hillside Cemetery. He was survived by his daughters, Faustine and Mrs. Lotta Hegnauer, both of Minneapolis, by his sister and by his brother Kerr.2

No record of his birth or death has been read.

His Tennessee death certificate should settle it.
- Birth (conflict): The 1900 census gives July 1857 and the 1910 census an age (52) that fits it; his obituary's age, 81 in July 1936, points to 1855.1, 6, 2 WikiTree gives 5 Jul 1855 without a source, which fits the obituary. The census date is recorded; the conflict is open. The Tennessee death certificate of July 1936 (Maury County), which Ancestry suggests on its 1900 census page as "Tennessee, U.S., Death Records, 1908–1965", is the next record to read, for his birth date, birthplace and parents. His sister Annie (Mrs. Galloway) is on WikiTree (Donnell-684) as born 4 Jan 1858; if that date is right, a birth in July 1857 is impossible and 1855 is the better reading, which is why WikiTree refused to change Donnell-683 from 5 Jul 1855 (27 Sep 2026). Annie's birth record and George's own Florida birth or Tennessee family records are needed to settle it; WikiTree keeps 5 Jul 1855 meanwhile.
