Life story
Newburgh, Indiana
Alice Juanita Johnson was born in Indiana in May 1862, probably at Newburgh, an Ohio River town in Warrick County, next to Evansville; her obituary gives her birthplace as "Newbury", Indiana.1–2 She had at least two brothers, Charles and Robert Johnson, who were living at Evansville in 1935, and a sister, Rose, later Mrs. Strong of Seattle.2
On 4 May 1887, in Warrick County, Alice, then of Newburgh, married George J. Donnell, a young man from Florida who became a Presbyterian minister.1, 3 Their daughters were born in Indiana: Lotta Alice on 3 January 1890, and Faustine about 1895.1, 4
A minister's wife
Alice's life followed George's pastorates. In 1900 the family was at Brookville, in Franklin County, Indiana, and in 1910 at Marshall, Missouri, in a house in the College Addition, where on 9 August 1910 George married their daughter Lotta to Robert L. Hegnauer.1, 5–6 In 1920 they were at Claremont, Dodge County, Minnesota, where George was the pastor and Faustine was teaching.7
About 1925 George and Alice moved to the Minneapolis area.2 In 1930 they were living with Faustine in the village of Morningside, on the western edge of Minneapolis.8
Death
Alice died at her home, 4208 West 44th Street, on Wednesday 12 June 1935, aged 73. Her funeral was held at the house on the Saturday afternoon, 15 June, and she was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Minneapolis. She was survived by her husband, the Rev. George Donnell, by her daughters Faustine and Mrs. Lotta Hegnauer, by two grandchildren (probably Lotta's sons, Robert and Leonard), and by her brothers and sister.2 George died at his sister's home in Tennessee in July 1936 and was buried in the same cemetery.9

Her obituary (a member's copy of a Newspapers.com clipping), her husband's obituary and her daughter Lotta's death certificate were read in the survey of Lotta's records. No record of her birth or death has been read.
- Identity: The records are linked as one woman as follows. (1) In 1900 Allice J. Donnell, born May 1862 in Indiana, is the wife of George Donnell at Brookville, Indiana, with daughters Lotta and Faustine, and in 1910 Alice J., 48, is with the same family at Marshall, Missouri.1, 5 (2) The 1920 and 1930 censuses attached in the family tree show George, Alice and Faustine together in Minnesota.7, 8 (3) Her obituary (1935) names her husband, the Rev. George Donnell, and her daughters Faustine and Mrs. Lotta "Hagnauer", and gives her age, 73, which fits May 1862.2 (4) Lotta's death certificate names her mother Alice Juanita Johnson.4

- Place of death: Her obituary gives her home as 4208 West Forty-fourth Street and says she had lived in Minneapolis for ten years.2 In 1930 the family was enumerated in the village of Morningside, which adjoined Minneapolis on the west (now part of Edina), and the house on West 44th Street probably lay there; the 1930 entry has not been read for the address.8 The death is therefore placed in Hennepin County.
