Robert Lucius Hegnauer Jr. was born on 25 January 1916 at Wells, in Faribault County, southern Minnesota, the elder son of Robert Lucius Hegnauer and Lotta Alice Donnell, and he died at Tacoma, Washington, on 21 June 1999.1, 2, 3 In the Second World War he served in the Pacific as a Navy machinist's mate. Afterwards he made his home in Cowlitz County, in southwestern Washington, where for many years he was a machinist in the paper industry at Longview, and where he and his first wife, Adelaide Louise Curtis, lived for more than thirty years.4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Childhood
Wells had been founded in 1869 as a railway village, and the Southern Minnesota railroad reached it the following winter.10 In January 1920 the census taker found the family in their own house there: Robert's father, then a cattle buyer, his mother, Robert, aged three, and a baby brother, Leonard Donnell.11 As a small boy Robert went by his middle name. When he turned six, in January 1922, the school news in the Wells Forum-Advocate reported: "The First Grade was entertained by Lucius Hegnauer who had a birthday party on Wednesday."12

By April 1930 the family had moved to Minneapolis, where fourteen-year-old Robert lived with his parents and brother in a rented house at 4849 Ewing Avenue South.13 Before the year was out his parents were divorced, and in November his father married again.14, 15 Robert finished four years of high school, and in 1935, at nineteen, he was living in rural Scott County, southwest of the city.16 By the summer of 1936 he was back in Minneapolis. When his mother's father, the Rev. George J. Donnell, died in Tennessee that July, an obituary there named "Mrs. Lotta Hegnauer of Minneapolis" and the "grandchildren Lucius and Donnell Hegnauer of Minneapolis".17, 18
Marriage and the Navy
In April 1940 Robert, twenty-four, and his wife, Adelaide, were renting a home on South Aldrich Avenue in Minneapolis for $25 a month. He was a custodian at an auto garage, working 54 hours that week, and had earned $700 the year before; Adelaide, who had been living in rural Chippewa County in 1935, was a waitress in a cafe.16 Their divorce certificate, drawn up forty-two years later, gives the date of their marriage as 11 September 1940, in Hennepin County, but the census had already listed them as husband and wife that April, and the record of the wedding has not been found.9, 16
The Selective Training and Service Act of September 1940, the first peacetime draft in the country's history, required every man from twenty-one to thirty-five to register.19 Robert registered at Minneapolis on 16 October 1940. He was living at 516 University Avenue S.E., where his mother had been living that spring, and working for the Bemis Bros. Bag Company, and he named "Mrs. Adelaide L. Hegnauer, wife" as the person who would always know his address. The registrar noted a man about six feet tall and 170 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair.2, 20 His brother, Donnell, who gave the same address, has the serial number just before his.21 Robert and Adelaide's first son, Robert Curtis, was born in Hennepin County on 18 April 1942.22
On 18 December 1943, at twenty-seven, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve at Minneapolis.4 He trained at the Naval Training Center at Farragut, Idaho, where he was on the roll in March 1944.5 Farragut had taken its first recruits in September 1942 and was then the Navy's second-largest training station; in the thirty months it was open it trained 293,381 recruits.23 From there he went to the Ship Repair Training Unit at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, in Washington. By May he was a machinist's mate second class, his rating marked "(SR)" for ship repair. On 2 May 1944 he passed to the navy yard's receiving station, and on 15 May he was sent for duty to USS YRD(M)-7, a floating workshop for machinery repairs.4, 24, 25 At home, the 1944 Minneapolis directory listed him as "USN", with Adelaide, at 3308 19th Avenue South.26
By the end of June he had reached Pearl Harbor, where he served at the receiving station and with the ship repair unit. On 12 October 1944 he was received on board USS Ocelot, which had just been converted at Pearl Harbor into the flagship of Service Squadron Ten, for further transfer to the squadron for duty.5, 27 The squadron, the largest of the Navy's mobile service squadrons, was a floating base of tenders, repair ships, docks and workshops. It followed the fighting fleet across the Pacific, supplying it and repairing its ships close to the combat areas so that they did not have to go back to their home bases.25 In January 1945 Robert was still serving with it: a report of changes headed "YRD (M) 7", among the rolls of the squadron's representative at Kwajalein, in the Marshall Islands, records him on 24 January as a machinist's mate second class.28 The date of his discharge has not been found.29 Half a century later his obituary remembered him as "a WWII Veteran of the Navy".30
Cowlitz County
By 1948 the family had moved west to Cowlitz County, in southwestern Washington, and Robert was a machinist living at Longview.6 Longview, where the Cowlitz River meets the Columbia, had been built in the 1920s by the Long-Bell Lumber Company as a planned industrial city, around what was then the largest lumber mill in the world. Longview Fibre had made kraft paper and linerboard there since 1927 from the sawdust and waste wood of Long-Bell's mill, and war production had brought prosperity back to the town and drawn hundreds of new workers.31 In April 1950 the census found Robert, Adelaide and eight-year-old Robert on a place of three acres or more outside the towns, and gave Robert's work as machinist in the paper industry.7 By 1957 they were living at Carrolls, a rural community just south of Kelso, and the 1960 Kelso directory names his employer, Longview Fibre.32, 8 In March 1958 Robert stood for his local school board: the notice of the biennial election of School District No. 118 of Cowlitz County, held on 11 March, named him as the only candidate for director of Director District No. 2, a two-year term.33 Robert and Adelaide had three sons in all.9, 30
In December 1969, when his father died in California, Robert was living at Kelso, the county seat, across the Cowlitz River from Longview.34, 35 In April 1973, when his mother died at Tacoma, he gave the particulars for her death certificate; his address was then 118 Ross Road, Kelso.36, 37
Later years
Robert and Adelaide's marriage ended after more than forty years. On Robert's petition, the Superior Court of Cowlitz County dissolved it on 4 March 1982; both then gave their address as 118 Ross Road, Kelso.9, 38 On 22 March 1982 Robert, then of Seattle, married Carolyn Ramona (Emerson) Mattoon of Everett, a native of Oregon, before a clergyman in Snohomish County.39 They had already married at Reno, Nevada, on 25 February, a week before the decree that ended his first marriage.40, 9 Carolyn had been born at Dallas, Oregon, in 1932. She died at Redmond, in King County, on 16 June 1990, aged fifty-eight, and was buried in Woodbine Cemetery at Puyallup.41
By May 1994 Robert had married a third time. His wife, Doris, born Davis, was very probably Doris Dell (Davis) Ferguson, born at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, in 1930; the record of their marriage has not been found.3, 42 Address indexes of the 1980s and early 1990s list him at Snohomish, at Sumner in Pierce County, and at Rainier, Oregon, across the Columbia from Longview.43, 44 Later in life he worked in the credit-union business: his obituary calls him the retired manager of Cascade Federal Credit Union of Seattle, and his death certificate gives his usual occupation as chief executive officer of a credit union.30, 3
By 1998 Robert was living just outside Puyallup, in Pierce County.3 He died on 21 June 1999, aged eighty-three, at the University Place Care Center in Tacoma.3, 45, 44 A memorial service was set for 26 June at the Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle, and he was cremated on 1 July.30, 3 Find a Grave records his burial in Woodbine Cemetery at Puyallup, where his name and Carolyn's are on a shared flat granite marker.46 He was survived by his wife, Doris, by his three sons, and by grandchildren, nieces and nephews.30 His eldest son, Robert Curtis Hegnauer, died in Pierce County on 12 September 2021.47

Date and county as given on their 1982 divorce certificate, the only record found that states them. No marriage record has been found. The April 1940 census already lists them as husband and wife (see Research Notes). Divorced 4 Mar 1982, Cowlitz County, Washington.
The only record that states the date and place is the certificate of dissolution of 1982, which gives the place of marriage as Hennepin Co., Minn., and the date as 9-11-40. It was completed 42 years after the event, so it is secondary evidence for the marriage. It conflicts with the 1940 census, taken in April 1940 with Robert as the informant, which already lists Adelaide as his wife and both as married. His draft card of 16 Oct 1940 names her as his wife. The Minnesota Official Marriage System has no marriage for the couple. The date is recorded as the certificate gives it; the conflict is unresolved.

Two more index lines give 18 and 13 Dec 1943 at Minneapolis, and the index of the May 1944 report itself reads 10 Dec; only the index of the Farragut roll (image not read) gives 12 Aug 1943. The image outranks the index, and the December date fits his recruit training at Farragut that winter. His death certificate says he served in the armed forces, his obituary calls him a WWII veteran of the Navy, and he is in the VA's death file.

- Identity: The records are linked as one man as follows. (1) In 1920 and 1930 Robert L. Jr. is the son of Robert L. and Lotta Hegnauer, with his brother Leonard, at Wells and at Minneapolis.11, 13 (2) His own Social Security application (1936) gives his birth on 25 Jan 1916 at Wells and names his parents, Robert L. Hegnauer and Lotta Donnell.1 (3) In April 1940 Robert L. Hegnauer Jr., 24, born in Minnesota, is in Minneapolis with his wife Adelaide, and his draft card of Oct 1940 gives the same birth date and birthplace as the application and names his wife, Mrs. Adelaide L. Hegnauer.16, 2 (4) Robert L. Hegnauer Jr. enlisted in the Naval Reserve at Minneapolis in 1943, and the 1944 Minneapolis directory lists "Robt L jr (Adelaide L) USN".4, 5, 26 (5) The 1950 census in Cowlitz County has Robert, 34, born in Minnesota, with Adelaide and their son Robert, 8, who was born in Hennepin County in 1942 to Robert Lucius and Adelaide Louise Hegnauer.7, 22 (6) The Kelso–Longview directories list Robert L. - Name: He is Robert Lucius Hegnauer Jr. in his 1936 Social Security application; Robert L. Hegnauer Jr. in the 1940 census, on his draft card, on the Navy rolls and in the directories (still "Robt L jr" at Kelso in 1960); Robert Hegnauer in the 1950 census, the VA death file and on Find a Grave; and R. L. Hegnauer on his 1982 marriage certificate and in the SSDI. His death certificate gives Robert Lucius Hegnauer and calls his father "Sr.". As a boy and a young man he was called by his middle name: "Lucius Hegnauer" in the Wells school news of 1922, and "Lucius" in his grandfather's Tennessee obituary of 1936.12, 18 Every record image seen spells the surname Hegnauer. "R L Hegnaner" (Ancestry's index of the 1982 marriage certificate, whose image reads Hegnauer) and "Robert J" (FamilySearch's index of the 1930 census) are indexing errors.39, 13
- "Lucius" (1922 and 1936): The first-grader "Lucius Hegnauer" of the Wells school news of 2 Feb 1922 is taken to be Robert Jr.: his was the only Hegnauer family known at Wells, he turned six on 25 Jan 1922 while his brother was two, and Lucius was his middle name.12, 11 Both 25 Jan and 1 Feb 1922 were Wednesdays, so the party was either on his birthday or a week later. The Tennessee obituary of 1936 names "Mrs. Lotta Hegnauer of Minneapolis" and "grandchildren Lucius and Donnell Hegnauer of Minneapolis"; Lotta's sons were Robert Lucius and Leonard Donnell, and the deceased is evidently her father, who died at Columbia, Tennessee, on 19 Jul 1936.18, 17 Only FamilySearch's machine transcription of that page has been read. The newspaper, its date and page, and which of the five Full-Text images found together it is, remain to be identified.
- 1935 and 1936: In the 1940 census he gave his residence on 1 Apr 1935 as rural Scott County, Minnesota, not on a farm.16 Why he was there has not been found. In July 1936 he was "of Minneapolis".18 The Robert Hegnauer who was master of ceremonies at a Wells basketball tournament in Feb 1936 (The Wells Mirror, 6 Feb 1936, p. 8) was probably his father, who lived at Wells in 1935 and 1940, and is not attributed to him (see his father's profile).
- Birth: 25 Jan 1916 at Wells in every record that gives a date: his own Social Security application and draft card, the SSDI, the 1982 divorce certificate and the 1999 death certificate.1, 2, 44, 9, 3 No birth certificate has been seen. The Minnesota Historical Society's index of birth certificates (1900–1934) should list a Faribault County certificate for 1916; it could not be searched.
- Marriage to Adelaide (conflict): No record of the marriage has been found, and the Minnesota Official Marriage System has none for the couple (searched under Hegnauer in all counties, and under Adelaide Curtis). The only statement of the date and place is the 1982 divorce certificate: Hennepin Co., Minn., 9-11-40, that is, 11 Sep 1940.9 That certificate was completed 42 years after the event. It conflicts with the 1940 census: in April 1940 Robert, who was the informant for the household, gave both of them as married, with Adelaide as his wife.16 His draft card of 16 Oct 1940 also names her as his wife, which fits either date.2 The marriage is recorded as the certificate gives it, and the conflict is unresolved. The Hennepin County marriage records, and the Minneapolis newspapers' lists of marriage licences for Sept 1939 and Sept 1940, have not been searched.
- Navy service: Every muster-roll line carries his service number, 871 08 48. Three rolls were read on the image: (1) the May 1944 report of changes of the Receiving Station, Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton (lines 6–7: enlisted 18 Dec 43 at Minneapolis; MM2c(SR); class V6SV; received 2 May 1944 from the Ship Repair Training Unit, "USS YRD(M)-7 Detail"; transferred 15 May 1944 to USS YRD(M)-7 for duty);4 (2) the roll of USS Ocelot (IX-110) (line 28: MM2c, USNR, received 12 Oct 1944 "From Navy #128 FFT to COMSERVRON TEN for duty"; Navy #128 was the fleet post office number for Pearl Harbor, and FFT means "for further transfer");5 and (3) a report of changes for January 1945, headed "YRD (M) 7", in the roll series of Commander, Service Squadron Ten's representative at Kwajalein (line 13: received 1-24-45, "ComServRon TEN Rep. "C" (LUZON) S.R.U. #1").28 The other lines are index entries, and several were not opened.5 "(SR)" in his rating stands for ship repair, and YRD(M) was the Navy's designation for a floating workshop and drydock for machinery.24, 25 The index dates of the lines of Jun, Sep and Dec 1944 and Jan 1945 are roll or report dates, not enlistments. The discharge date has not been found, and the index of the VA death file gives no service dates.29
- Kwajalein entry (reading revised): The Kwajalein entry was first read as repair unit C of the squadron, in the repair ship Luzon, and Ship Repair Unit No. 1; that reading is kept in the fact's note. Carter's official history of the service squadrons uses "representative" for the officers who commanded the squadron's detachments (Captain S. B. Ogden, in Cascade, was representative "A" at Kwajalein and Roi), and it records that Luzon was the flagship of the representative at Kwajalein until September 1944 and then went on to Guam, where her captain became the squadron's representative.25 Luzon was at Apra, Guam, as a unit of Service Squadron 10 from 11 Sep 1944 until 1 Mar 1945.48 So "Rep. "C" (LUZON)" is probably the squadron's representative "C", with his flag in Luzon, then at Guam. Whether the line records Robert coming from that command or going to it, and where YRD(M)-7 then lay, the line does not say; the roll's column headings should be read. Ocelot herself sailed from Pearl Harbor in October 1944 by way of Eniwetok for Ulithi;27 whether he sailed in her is not recorded.
- Date of enlistment (conflict; 18 Dec 1943 preferred): Two dates are recorded, both at Minneapolis. (1) 18 Dec 1943: the May 1944 report of changes, read on the image, gives "18 Dec 43" in its date-of-enlistment column.4 Three index lines point the same way: the Ship Repair Unit, Pearl Harbor, 18 Dec 1943; an unopened line, 13 Dec 1943; and the index of the May 1944 report itself, 10 Dec 1943, where the image reads 18.5, 4 (2) 12 Aug 1943: only the index of the Farragut roll of March 1944; its image has not been read.5 The December date is preferred. It rests on an image, three separate index lines agree on the month, and their day readings (13, 10) are easy misreadings of a handwritten 18. It also fits the sequence of his service: training at Farragut through the winter (he was on its roll in March 1944), then the Ship Repair Training Unit at Bremerton and the receiving station there on 2 May 1944. The August date may be an indexing error, or a different event, such as the day he was accepted into the Reserve before being called to active duty; nothing yet shows which. Until the Farragut image is read, 12 Aug 1943 is kept as the alternative. The study's earlier reading, which took 12 Aug 1943 as the enlistment and the December index dates as report dates, is corrected here.
- Fold3 memorial: A Fold3 memorial for him, compiled by a user without sources, gives his birth and death dates correctly but his branch as the U.S. Army.49 That is wrong: the muster rolls, the 1944 directory ("USN") and his obituary all place him in the Navy.5, 4, 26, 30
- School director candidate (1958): The Longview Daily News of 6 Mar 1958 printed the notice of the biennial election of School District No. 118 of Cowlitz County, to be held at the schoolhouse on 11 Mar 1958; Robert L. Hegnauer is the only name on the ballot line for Director District No. 2, two-year term.33 Ancestry's index of the page gives Longview as his "residence", which is only the newspaper's place of publication. Whether he was elected, and which community the district served, are not known; the result may be in the paper's issues of 12–13 Mar 1958.
- Work: The Kelso–Longview directories give machinist in 1948 and 1957 (index entries; the images have not been read) and Longview Fibre in 1960 (image read); the 1950 census gives machinist in the paper industry.6, 32, 8, 7 Later he was the manager, or chief executive officer, of Cascade Federal Credit Union of Seattle, according to his obituary and his death certificate, whose informant was a son.30, 3 When he left the mill, and when he held the credit-union post, are not known. On his marriage certificate of March 1982 he gave his city as Seattle.39 Other directory entries, not yet read, are listed in the sources.50
- Divorce: The certificate of dissolution is the primary record: a decree of the Superior Court of Cowlitz County, 4 Mar 1982, on the husband's petition, with three children born alive to the marriage.9 Both spouses then gave their residence as 118 Ross Road, Kelso.
- Second marriage, at Reno and in Washington: The Nevada marriage index records the marriage of Robert L. Hegnauer and Carolyn R. Mattoon, both of Washington, at Reno on 25 Feb 1982, recorded there on 10 Mar 1982; FamilySearch's index of it gives only the recording date.40 The Reno ceremony took place seven days before the decree that dissolved his first marriage (4 Mar 1982).9 The couple married again on 22 Mar 1982 in Snohomish County, Washington, eighteen days after the decree, under a licence issued that day by the Skagit County auditor.39 Both events are recorded as the records give them, and the Washington marriage is the preferred one. A companion index entry for Skagit County, dated 19 Mar 1982, has not been opened.
- Carolyn: She was born Carolyn Ramona Emerson on 13 Jun 1932 at Dallas, Polk County, Oregon. Mattoon was the surname of her first husband, Thomas Edwin Mattoon, whom she married in 1952. She died at Redmond, King County, Washington, on 16 Jun 1990, aged 58.41 Her age (49) and her Oregon birth on the 1982 certificate fit.39 The Washington death index of her 1990 death gives her as Carolyn Romona Hegnauer and has a spouse line for Robert L. Hegnauer, so she died his wife.51 No death certificate for her has been read (see her profile).
- Third marriage (probable): His death certificate names his surviving spouse as Doris, maiden name Davis, and his obituary names his wife Doris.3, 30 She is identified as Doris Dell Davis, born 15 Jul 1930 at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, died 13 Jan 2007, who was Doris Dell Ferguson from 1950. Her Social Security record gives the name Doris D. Hegnauer from 19 May 1994, and address indexes list a Doris D. Hegnauer at Rainier, Oregon, and at Puyallup, the towns where Robert lived.42, 52 Her Social Security record gives the name Doris D. Ferguson again in Jan 2007. No divorce of Robert and Carolyn appears in the Washington divorce index, which has only his 1982 divorce from Adelaide,38 so the marriage to Doris took place between Carolyn's death (Jun 1990) and May 1994. No record of it has been found: a search of the Washington marriage records for Robert Hegnauer found only the 1982 marriage, and Oregon and Nevada have not been searched (see her profile).
- Death: His death certificate gives the place as Tacoma, at the University Place Care Center, a nursing home, and the cause as non-small cell lung carcinoma.3 Rainier, Oregon, in the SSDI is his last residence on the Social Security record, not the place of death;44 a family tree that gives Rainier as the place of death is wrong.
- Burial: He was cremated on 1 Jul 1999 at Seattle.3 Find a Grave records his burial in Woodbine Cemetery, Puyallup, plot A, AG, 553, 1, and shows his name with Carolyn's on a flat granite marker. Carolyn's plot is given as A, AG, 518, 1, although they share the marker.46, 41 The date of the interment of his ashes is not recorded; the cemetery's interment register has not been checked. FamilySearch's index of the Find a Grave memorial misplaces Woodbine Cemetery at Woodbine, Jo Daviess County, Illinois.46
- Addresses after 1982: These come from commercial address indexes only: 18432 Highway 9, Snohomish (undated); 217 4th Avenue NW, Puyallup, Washington 98371 (undated; with his exact birth date); and, in 1993, 30416 Brownlee Road, Rainier, Oregon, and 7324 142nd Avenue East, Sumner, Washington.43, 52 His death certificate gives 4610 6th Place SE, Puyallup, and one year's residence in Pierce County in 1999.3 The Puyallup address of the index is not the one on the certificate, and it is undated, so it is not entered as a dated residence; the indexes and the certificate have not been reconciled.
- Children: The 1982 certificate records three children born to Robert and Adelaide.9 The eldest, Robert Curtis Hegnauer, was born on 18 Apr 1942 in Hennepin County and died on 12 Sep 2021 in Pierce County, Washington.22, 47 The other two sons are living and are not named here.
