Leta Gujan married Jacob Hegnauer, the first of his name at Igis, in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, Switzerland, on 23 June 1724, four months after the death of his first wife, Margreth Hartmann.1–2 Over the next ten years she had at least four children baptised at Igis: Nuttin in August 1725, Jacob in January 1727, Elsbeth in January 1731 and Hanss Heinrich in January 1734.3–6 Her sons Nuttin and Hanss Heinrich were very probably the heads of the two Hegnauer families of Igis in the later 1700s.

Gujan, the most probable reading of her surname, was an old Graubünden name: the Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz records Gujan citizens of Fideris from 1647 and of Saas before 1800, both families originally from Zernez.7 Where Leta herself came from is not known. She was alive at Hanss Heinrich's baptism in January 1734, and her burial has not been found.6

Research notes

  • Sources: Every record of her is from FamilySearch's index of the Igis Reformed church book (DGS 8014188); the images can be viewed only at a FamilySearch Center or affiliate library and have not been seen. The note on the Gujan families is from the Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz.
  • Surname: indexed Kujany (marriage, 1724), "Lujanin" (1725), Küjanin (1727), Bujanim (1731) and Bujani (1734).1, 3, 4, 5, 6 Between them the pastor's hand and the indexers produced these forms, but the Leda (Leta) and the "-jan-" at the heart of the surname stay constant, and Gujan, written with the feminine ending -in, is the reading that accounts for all of them (G read as K, B or L). Gujan is a Graubünden family name, with citizens of Fideris and Saas;7 the images (FamilySearch Center only, DGS 8014188) should settle it.
  • Given name: Leda in three entries; "Ce" in 1725 is probably a misreading. Leta is a Graubünden given name; Leda is the index's reading of it.
  • Birth and death: not found. Her baptism, if at Igis, may be indexed under Gujan or a variant; her burial may be indexed under Hegnauer with her maiden name.
  • Baptism (search of 27 Sep 2026, not found): The Gujan baptisms of 1688–1704 in FamilySearch's Swiss church-record index (place given only as "Schweiz") are Anna 1688, Martin 1689, Ulrich 1691, Künga 1691, Dorothea 1700 and Elssbeth 1704, and probably Jacob "Gujar" 1702; there is no Leta or Leda. Given names Le* with surnames Guj* return 44 entries, and the only Leda among them is the later woman below.
  • Burial (search of 27 Sep 2026, not found): The Igis and Zizers index has only 28 entries, 1734–1790, with a given name like Leta, Leda or Lena, and none is a burial. She may be buried under a misread or omitted given name.
  • Lead: a Gujan family that used both Leda and Nutt (possible only): Leda (Ledonia) Gujan, wife of Hans Jörg Schmid, had a son Nutt Schmid baptised on 19 Sep 1789.8 She is a later woman, not this Leta, but her family used both Leda and Nutt two generations on. This suggests that the given name Nutt was used in Gujan families, and Leta's first son was baptised Nuttin (1725), a name new among the Hegnauers, so it may have come from her own family. The 1789 entry is on the film of the Scharans, Malans and Scheid registers (DGS 8126174, folder 004); if it is from Malans, just across the Rhine from Igis, that is a lead for Leta's home, although the Malans register begins only in 1721, too late for her own baptism. Nothing connects the two women yet.
