Hans Hegnauer and his wife, Salome Peter, had four daughters baptised at Elgg, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, between 1558 and 1567.1–4

Marriage and family

The record of Hans and Salome's wedding has not been found. Their eldest known child, Anna, was baptised on 16 October 1558, and Salome, who shared her mother's name, on 24 February 1564. Apollonia followed on 30 December 1565 and Dorothea on 4 May 1567.1–4

The girls were baptised in a church that had been Reformed since 1524, when Zürich imposed the Reformation on Elgg against considerable resistance.5

Later years

Hans is last recorded at Dorothea's baptism in May 1567.4 His death has not been found; the Elgg burial register survives only from 1591.6

Research notes

  • Sources: FamilySearch's index of the Elgg church book: four baptisms, each with a separate entry for the father. The images (DGS 8014314) have not been seen.
  • Name: indexed Hans (1558, 1565) and Hansen (1564, 1567); the surname is Hegnouwer, and Hognouwer in 1564, probably a misreading. The profile uses the modern spelling, Hegnauer.
  • Children: all four are proven: each baptism names both parents. No baptism of theirs is indexed between October 1558 and February 1564; the register images should be searched for children missing from the index.
  • Which Hans? Four Hans Hegnouwer couples are named at Elgg between 1553 and 1567: Hans and Margreta Wister (a daughter baptised in 1553), Hans and Anna Petter (married 15 Jun 1555), Hans and Elsa Furer (married 9 Feb 1556; children 1561 and 1562) and Hans and Salome Peter (children 1558–1567; this profile).7, 8, 9, 1 Brosshans was also entered once as plain Hans, in 1567.10 The husbands of Elsa Furer and Salome Peter both had children baptised between 1561 and 1564, so they were two different men. The husbands of Margreta Wister and Anna Petter may be the same men in earlier marriages, or others; nothing in the index decides it, and the study keeps all four apart. The register images, which may call a groom a widower, are the best hope of joining them.
  • Anna Petter: a Hans Hegnouwer married Anna Petter at Elgg in 1555. That couple may be this one, if a given name was misread; the study keeps them apart (possible).
  • The daughters' later lives (possible only): Salome may be the Salome Hegner who married Michel Zingler and was buried at Elgg in 1627, and Apollonia the Apollonia Hegner who married Mathys Peter there in 1585 (see Salome's and Apollonia's profiles). Neither is linked.
