Anna Hegnauer was baptised at Elgg, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, on 3 September 1553, the daughter of Hans Hegnauer and Margreta Wister.1 Hers is the earliest record of the Hegnauer family at Elgg, one of only two places where the Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz records a Hegnauer citizenship older than 1800.2

She was born into a Reformed parish. Zürich had imposed the Reformation on Elgg in 1524, against considerable resistance, and in 1526 it ordered that church books be kept;3–4 the Elgg books survive from 1551, two years before her baptism.5 No later record of her has been found.
