Life story
Switzerland and Rockville
Anna Wirz was born on 17 September 1860 in Switzerland, a daughter of Samuel Wirz (written Wirtz), who was also Swiss-born.1–2 According to the 1930 census she came to America about 1862, when she was a small child.3 By about 1880 she was living in the Rockville neighbourhood of Bates County, Missouri, which was to be her home for the rest of her life: when she died, in 1943, her death certificate recorded 63 years in the community.1
Marriage and family
On 15 November 1886 Anna, then twenty-six, married Christian Hegnauer, the eighteen-year-old elder son of the Swiss farmer Leonhard Hegnauer of Pleasant Gap Township.4 They farmed in Pleasant Gap Township, near Christian's parents, and by 1900 they had seven children: Lena (born in May 1887), Clara (1889), Leonard Samuel (1891), Rosa (1893), Lizzie (1895), Christian Herman (1897) and Marie (1900).2 They were still on the farm in 1910.5 Her elder son was named Leonard Samuel, probably for his two grandfathers, Leonhard Hegnauer and Samuel Wirz.
By January 1923 Anna and Christian had moved into the town of Rockville.6 The censuses of 1930 and 1940 find them there, Anna then in her seventies.3, 7
Death
Anna's heart had been failing for some years, and from January 1943 she was under a doctor's care. She died at home in Rockville at 6:30 in the evening on 20 August 1943, aged 82, and was buried two days later at Prairie City, in the cemetery where Christian too was buried fourteen years later.1, 8 Her son Leonard, a minister at Canton, Ohio, gave the details for her death certificate.1 Three of her children, Marie, Lizzie and Christian, died before their father; the other four outlived him.9

Her death certificate (image read; informant her son Leonard) gives 17 Sep 1860 in Switzerland, and her age at death, 82 years, 11 months and 3 days, computes from it. The 1900 census gives Sep 1860, Switzerland, and Find a Grave has the same date. Where in Switzerland is not known; no baptism has been found.

1862 Immigration
Year of immigration as answered in the 1930 census (index as abstracted in the family tree). Her death certificate says she had lived in her community (Rockville) for 63 years, that is since about 1880.
The 1930 census is the only record seen that gives a year; the 1900 census, which also asked it, has not been read. She would then have come as a child of about two. The port and the family she came with are not known.

Marriage of Christian Hegnauer and Annie Wirz. FamilySearch's index gives the place as Butler, the county seat, where licences were issued; the family tree gives Rockville Township. The register itself has not been read.
FamilySearch's index of the Bates County marriage records and Ancestry's indexes of the Missouri marriage records give the marriage of Christian Hegnauer and Annie Wirz on 15 Nov 1886. The 1900 census, whose index computes the marriage year as 1887 from the years married, has Christian and Anna together with their seven children, the eldest born in May 1887, and his 1957 obituary says he married Miss Anna "Wertz". Index only; the register has not been read.

Her Missouri death certificate (image read), signed by the attending physician on 22 Aug 1943, gives 20 Aug 1943 at Rockville, with her birth date, her father Samuel Wirtz and her husband Chris Hegnauer, living; the informant was her son, L. S. Hegnauer of Canton, Ohio. Find a Grave agrees.

- Identity: The Annie Wirz who married Christian Hegnauer in Bates County on 15 Nov 1886 is the Anna who is his wife, born Sep 1860 in Switzerland, in the 1900 census, and the Anna of the 1910, 1930 and 1940 censuses.4, 2, 5, 3, 7 Her death certificate names her husband Chris Hegnauer and her father Samuel Wirtz, and her son L. S. Hegnauer of Canton, Ohio, was the informant.1 Her husband's obituary calls her Anna "Wertz".9 The census facts come from the Ancestry tree's attached records and FamilySearch's indexes; those images have not been re-read. The death certificate was read from the image.
- Surname: Wirz in the marriage index; Wirtz for her father on her death certificate and on Find a Grave; Wertz in the 1957 obituary.4, 1, 8, 9 Wirz is a Swiss surname (common in Aargau, Basel-Landschaft and Zürich), and Wirtz and Wertz are phonetic spellings of it. Her origin in Switzerland is not known.
- Parents: Only her father's name, Samuel Wirtz, is known, from her death certificate; her mother's maiden name was unknown to the informant.1 The Samuel Wirz family has not been found in the censuses of 1870 or 1880. Her son Leonard Samuel was probably named for his two grandfathers, Leonard (Leonhard) Hegnauer and Samuel Wirz; this is an inference.
- Immigration: "1862" is from the 1930 census as abstracted in the family tree; the tree has a second, unsourced year, 1863.3 The 1900 and 1910 censuses, which also asked the year, should be read.
- Marriage year: the index of the 1900 census computes 1887 from the years married, a year after the recorded date.2
- Children: seven, all named in the 1900 census and in her husband's obituary.2, 9 The 1900 census's count of children born and living should be read.
- Her husband's obituary is abstracted from the page image as saying that Mrs. Hegnauer died in "[1951]"; her death certificate gives 1943, which is accepted.1, 9
- Unexplained entry: a "Christopher H. Hegnauer" (born 1853, died 23 Aug 1943), buried at Prairie City according to FamilySearch's Find a Grave index (and "Christopher H. Hegnaur", Zion Lutheran, in Ancestry's Bates County cemetery index), died three days after Anna. He may be a garbled entry; it should be checked against the cemetery.
