1. "Certificate of Death for Sylvester Krattley" (member photo)

• Contributor's description: "Sylvester Krattley died May 14, 1916 in Carthage, MO due to acute prostatitis. He was born Nov 5, 1834 in Switzerland. He was a farmer. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, MO, Carthage, MO".
• What it is: a composite scan of (a) a certified photocopy of Missouri death certificate no. 18197, with the Missouri Department of Health certification stamp dated JUN 14 1988 ("State of Missouri, City of Jefferson ... The reproduction of this document ..."), and (b) a colour snapshot of his flat grave marker.

• Assessment: accept (a document about him plus his own gravestone). It adds nothing new beyond the Ancestry image, but it shows the family's 1988 certified copy and a clear photo of his stone, which spells the name Krattly (his will's form). Cite the Ancestry image, not this copy, for the death facts.

• What it is: a collage of four colour snapshots:
  1. flat marker "SYLVESTER / KRATTLY / NOV. 5. 1834 / MAY. 14. 1916";
  2. flat marker "CHRISTINA / KRATTLY / OCT. 26. 1845 / JAN. 8. 1934";
  3. an upright family monument with "KRATTLY" on the base;
  4. a wide view of the family plot among trees.
• Assessment: accept (his and his wife's graves). The markers agree with his death certificate (5 Nov 1834 – 14 May 1916) and with Christina's certificate 1575 and Find a Grave 145799858. Useful for Burial (Oak Hill Cemetery, Carthage) for both spouses.

• What it is: an undated black-and-white photograph of a two-storey frame farmhouse with a porch trimmed with gingerbread, two chimneys and a side porch with steps; the family of ten stands and sits in front of it. Handwritten caption below the photo:

  back row - Mary, Rosa, Sylvester, Alma, Anna, Flora front row - Lizzie, Mother Christina, Emma, Father Sylvester

• Dating: all eight children named in the 1913 will are present and Margaret (d. 1892) is not; the youngest, Emma (b. 1888), appears adult. So the photo was probably taken between about 1900 and 1913, and certainly before Sylvester's death in May 1916. The house is presumably the home farm at "Krattley Crossing", Marion Township, west of Carthage.
• Assessment: accept for Sylvester, Christina and each child. It is the only known photograph of the family. The caption is the contributor's copy of a family annotation (not contemporary evidence of dates).

  DIES AT AGE OF 82 Sylvester Kratley Passes Away at Home Near Carthage Sylvester Kratley, who resided on a farm 3½ miles west of Carthage, died at 2:45 o'clock yesterday morning of a complication of diseases. Mr. Kratley was born November 5, 1834, in Switzerland, making him almost 82 years old. He came to America with his parents, who bought a farm and settled near Hermann, Mo. He had resided in Jasper county since 1872. He was married in 1869 to Miss Christine Hegnauer, of Gasconade county, Missouri. Mrs. Kratley and following sons and daughters survive: Mrs. Mary Kasper, of Carthage Route No. 4; Mrs. Lizzie Blase, of Carytown; Mrs. Rosa Eliason, of Carthage; Mrs. Flora Rose, residing east of Carthage; Misses Alma, Anna and Emma Kratley and Sylvester Kratley, jr., all residing at the Kratley home. Mr. Kratley was a well known farmer. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Kratley home by Rev. J. W. Trowbridge. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

• Assessment: accept (a document about him). This is Sylvester's own Carthage obituary, the one the H0005 pass could not find. Unlike the Hermann paper, it names Flora (Mrs. Rose) among the survivors and says Christine Hegnauer "of Gasconade county, Missouri", married 1869, the move to Jasper County in 1872. Minor conflict: the paper puts his death at 2:45 a.m. on Sunday 14 May; check the certificate's hour. Funeral at the home on Tuesday 16 May 1916, which agrees with the certificate's burial date. Cite the Newspapers.com page (original), not the clipping.

  • Born 5 Nov 1834, Untervaz, Graubünden (alternate 3 Nov 1834, Untervaz). No Swiss register is cited. Untervaz is not proven. See the survey abstracts: the 1846 passenger list and the Gasconade records name his father Nicolas, not George.
  • Parents Nicholaus (Nicholas) Kraettli (b. Jan 1793, Switzerland) and Maria Plattner (b. 1802). Ancestry offers these two as "potential" parents on our tree's Facts page. The parents are partly corroborated: Nicolas and Marie Kraettli are on the 1846 Amulet list with Christian and Silvester, and Nickolas (59) and Mary (48) are in the 1850 household. The maiden name Plattner is unsourced.
  • "Half-brother" Christian Kraettly, 18 Aug 1824 – 23 Jun 1907, Missouri (child of Nicholaus with no spouse given). Christian's own will calls Sylvester "my dear brother" (full or half not stated).
