James Harrison Cook was born on 12 September 1865 in Otoe County, Nebraska, then still a territory, the son of John Cook, an Englishman, and his wife Lena Kimmick, who was from New Jersey.1–2 On 2 April 1885, at Auburn, the seat of Nemaha County, he married Adelaide M. (Addie) Haywood, a Nebraska girl of nineteen, the daughter of Charles Haywood, who was also English-born.1, 3–4

James farmed in Nebraska and then went into business at Julian, a village in northern Nemaha County.1 In June 1900 he was a lumberman there, owning his house free of mortgage. Addie had borne seven children, six of them living, and six were at home: Arthur, twelve; Lena E., ten; Hazel, eight; Blanche, five; Charles H., three; and the baby, Calixte C.4 By 1919 the couple had had nine children, one of whom, a son, had died.1

Spokane

About 1910 or 1911 James moved his family west to Spokane, Washington, where he went into the real estate business on his own account.1–2 He fell ill with pulmonary tuberculosis in the spring of 1919 and died at home, 1930 West Boone Avenue, on the morning of 1 November 1919, aged fifty-four. His wife, "Ada M.", gave the details for his death certificate.2 After a service at the house, his body was taken back to Nebraska by his widow and his mother; the funeral was held in the Methodist Episcopal church at Julian, and he was buried in the Camp Creek cemetery.1

He left his wife, five sons, among them John F. and Charles of Copeland, Idaho, and James A. and Calixte C. of Omaha, and his daughters, among them "Mrs. Curtis of Spencer, Iowa", his daughter Hazel, who was living at Spencer with her husband, Arthur Garfield Curtis, and their children, and "Mrs. Shiffer of Spokane", his daughter Blanche. His mother and four sisters also survived him.1, 5–6

    His obituary gives Otoe County, 12 Sep 1865; his death certificate 12 Sep 1865, Nebraska. The 1900 census gives Sept 1864, and his marriage record's age (21 in 1885) also points to 1864.

    His obituary and his death certificate, for which his wife was the informant, both give 12 Sep 1865, and the certificate's age (54 years, 1 month, 19 days) computes to it; the obituary names Otoe County. The 1900 census confirms the month but gives 1864, as does his age at marriage, so 1864 remains possible. No birth record exists for Nebraska Territory in 1865. WikiTree's 12 Nov 1865 is wrong in the month.

Heywood on 2 Apr 1885, and in June 1900 James and Addie had been married fifteen years.

    His obituary (13 Nov 1919) says that after a service at his home his body, with his mother and widow, was taken to Nebraska for services at Julian and burial in Camp Creek cemetery; the certificate's "Nebraska City, Neb." agrees in substance. The date of the burial is not given, and the cemetery's county has not been confirmed.
