John F. Cook was a son of James Harrison Cook and Adelaide M. (Addie) Haywood, who married at Auburn, Nemaha County, Nebraska, in April 1885. When his father died at Spokane, Washington, in November 1919, the Nemaha County paper listed five surviving sons, among them "John F. and Charles C. of Copeland, Idaho": John and his younger brother Charles were then living in the far north of Idaho, near the Canadian border.1

According to the old family tree, which cites no record, his full name was John Fredrick, he was born on 5 July 1886 at St. Francis, in Cheyenne County in the northwest corner of Kansas, and he died on 17 February 1975 at Salinas, California.2 He was not in his parents' household at Julian, Nebraska, in June 1900, when he would have been about thirteen.3

  • Sources: His father's obituary (page read 27 Sep 2026) is the only record read that names him.1 His dates and full name come from the old family tree, copied from an Ancestry member tree without a source.2
  • 1900 census: He is not in the household. His mother was then the mother of 7 children, 6 living, which counts the six children at home and one who had died; if John F. was her son, born in 1886, the count is short by one. The obituary's "nine children, all living but one son" (1919) fits John F., the six of 1900, the son who had died and a child born after 1900. Where John F. was in 1900 is the key question: a search of the 1900 census for John Cook, born about 1886 in Kansas or Nebraska, is the next step.3, 1
  • Kansas birth (lead): The tree places his birth, and his brother James Arthur's in 1888, at St. Francis, Kansas; the 1900 census gives James Arthur's birthplace as Nebraska. The family's whereabouts between 1885 and 1890 need a record.2, 3
