Calixte Clayton Cook was born in Nebraska in May 1899, the youngest son at home of James Harrison Cook and Adelaide M. (Addie) Haywood. In June 1900 "Calixte C." was the baby of the family at Julian, Nemaha County, where his father was a lumberman, with his brothers Arthur and Charles and his sisters Lena, Hazel and Blanche.1

About 1911 the family moved to Spokane, Washington. When his father died there in November 1919, Calixte, twenty, was living at Omaha, Nebraska, as was his brother James A..2 He married Margaretha F., very probably née Fincke, who according to the 1950 census had been born in Hawaii about 1899, and they settled in California, where their son Calixte Clayton Cook Jr. was born on 10 August 1928, at Oakland according to his obituary index.3–5

By 1950 the Cooks were living in Modoc County, in the far northeastern corner of California; the old family tree's reading of that year's census gives Calixte and Margaretha as cleaners and their son as a laundryman. That same spring Calixte's sister Hazel and her husband, Arthur G. Curtis, were working in a laundry at Alturas, the county seat, Arthur as its superintendent and Hazel at the counter.3, 6 The old family tree gives Calixte's death on 11 March 1963, without a place or a source.7 Their son died at Alturas in 1968.4–5

    The 1950 census, as cited in the old family tree, lists Calixte Clayton Cook as head and Margaretha F. as his wife; their son's California death index entry gives his mother's maiden name as Fincke, and his obituary index names his mother "Marga Cook". The census entry has not been read in this study.
