Lena Kimmick was born in New Jersey and married John Cook, an Englishman.1–2 Their son James Harrison Cook was born in Otoe County, Nebraska Territory, on 12 September 1865, and they had at least four daughters.3 When James married at Auburn, Nemaha County, in April 1885, the county's marriage record named his parents as John and Lena Cook.4

Lena outlived her son. James died of tuberculosis at his home in Spokane, Washington, on 1 November 1919; after a service there, his mother and his widow took his body home to Nebraska for the funeral in the Methodist church at Julian and burial in the Camp Creek cemetery. His obituary named his mother and four sisters among his survivors.3 For James's death certificate his widow gave his mother's maiden name, Kimmick, and her birthplace, New Jersey.1
