Life story
Blanche Mildred Cook was born in Nebraska in March 1895, a daughter of James Harrison Cook and Adelaide M. (Addie) Haywood.1–2 In June 1900, aged five, she was living at Julian, in Nemaha County, where her father was a lumberman, with her brother Arthur, her sisters Lena and Hazel and her little brothers Charles and Calixte.1
About 1911 the family moved to Spokane, Washington, and by 1919 Blanche had married a Mr. Shiffer. When her father died in November 1919 she was "Mrs. Shiffer of Spokane", and her mother and grandmother took his body back to Nebraska for burial.3 She kept the name Shiffer for the rest of her life; to the Social Security Administration she was Blanche Mildred Shiffer, daughter of James H. Cook and Adelaide M. Heywood.2
She lived to a good age. When her sister Hazel died at Longview, Washington, in January 1978, Blanche, then eighty-two and living at Ashland, in southern Oregon, was the only brother or sister named among the survivors.4 The family tree gives her death on 23 November 1981 in Jackson County, Oregon, where Ashland lies, without a source.5
