William L. Hammer

William L. Hammer was born in Missouri about 1888, a son of Fritz (Fred) Hammer and Mary Christina Hegnauer.1 His mother was a daughter of the Swiss-born farmer Leonhard Hegnauer of Pleasant Gap Township.2

In June 1900 William, about twelve, was at school and living on his parents' farm in Pleasant Gap Township with his sisters Lydia and Emily and his little brother Arthur.1 He may have been the "Will Hammer" who, with his wife, went from the Prairie City neighbourhood to the funeral of his great-aunt Barbara (Hegnauer) Kamm at Rich Hill in January 1923.3 His later life has not been traced.

  • Sources: His birth and 1900 residence come from the census index entry attached to him in the Ancestry tree; the image has not been re-read. The other items were read on screen during the surveys of his Hegnauer relatives' records.
  • "Will Hammer" in 1923: "Mr. and Mrs. Will Hammer" attended Barbara Kamm's funeral in January 1923, reported by the Prairie City correspondent.3 He may be this William, a great-nephew of Barbara, but a grown William Hammer was already in the neighbourhood with Fred Hammer in 1892 (probably Fred's brother), so the identification is not certain.
