Baschy Hegnauer (Sebastian) was baptised at Elgg, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, on 28 April 1561, the son of Brosshans Hegnauer and his first wife, Madalena.1 He is the only child of that marriage on record. His father married again in 1564, and the children of his stepmother, Barbara Rugger, were baptised at Elgg between 1565 and 1573.2–4 No later record can be tied to him with certainty.

  • Sources: FamilySearch's index of the Elgg church book: his baptism, with separate entries for both parents. The image (DGS 8014314) has not been seen.1
  • Name: indexed Baschy Hegnouwer. Baschy, or Baschi, is the Swiss short form of Sebastian.
  • Parents: proven; the baptism names both.
  • Husband of Barbel Peter? (possible): Baschi Hegnauer married Barbel Peter at Elgg on 16 May 1585 (the entry is indexed "Barth Hegnowler") and had children baptised there from 1588 to 1603.5 Baschy of 1561 is the only Baschi baptised at Elgg in the index, and he would have been 24 in 1585, but no marriage entry of the period names the groom's father. Possible only, as in the study's Elgg reconstruction; not linked.
