Regula Hegnauer was baptised at Elgg, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, on 21 May 1561, the daughter of Hans Hegnauer and Elsa Furer, who had married there five years before.1–2 Her brother Jörg was baptised fifteen months later.3

Her name was that of one of Zürich's two city saints, Felix and Regula, though the Reformation had abolished the veneration of saints there in 1524.4 No later record of her has been found.
