Elszbet Hegnauer was baptised at Elgg, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, on 20 July 1567. She was very probably the daughter of Brosshans Hegnauer and his second wife, Barbara (Barbel) Rugger, who are entered at her baptism as Hans and Barbel.1 Her brother Heinrich was two years older, and a younger brother and sister, Hans and Dorothe, were baptised together in 1570.2–4 No later record of her has been found.

    The Elgg baptism register (FamilySearch index; her entry and a separate entry for her father) names her parents as Hansen Hegnouwer and Barbel Kuger. Kuger is one of the readings of Rugger, and no other Hans Hegnauer of Elgg had a wife Barbel, so they are very probably Brosshans Hegnauer and Barbara (Barbel) Rugger.
