Hans Hegnauer was baptised at Elgg, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, on 20 April 1570, together with his sister Dorothe; they were very probably twins. Their parents were Brosshans Hegnauer and his second wife, Barbara (Barbel) Rugger.1–2 He had an older brother, Heinrich, and an older half-brother, Baschy; a younger sister, Ursula, very probably followed in 1573.3–5 No later record can be tied to him with certainty.
