Carolyn Ramona Emerson was born on 13 June 1932 at Dallas, the seat of Polk County in Oregon's Willamette Valley, a daughter of Ralph W. Emerson and Genevieve A. Carr.1–2

In 1952 Carolyn married Thomas Edwin Mattoon, and they had two sons, Kim Thomas Mattoon (1957–2021) and Kevin Harold Mattoon (1961–2021).1 In early 1982 Carolyn R. Mattoon, then living at Everett, Washington, married Robert Lucius Hegnauer Jr., of Seattle, whose first marriage, of more than forty years, was just ending. They were married at Reno, Nevada, on 25 February 1982, a week before the court in Cowlitz County dissolved Robert's first marriage, and again, at eight in the evening on 22 March 1982, before a clergyman in Snohomish County. On that certificate she signed her new name, "Carolyn R Hegnauer".3–5

By July 1982 Carolyn and Robert were living at Sumner, in Pierce County, and later address indexes list Robert at Snohomish and again at Sumner.6–7 Carolyn died on 16 June 1990, aged fifty-eight, at Redmond, King County, and an obituary appeared a week later.1, 8–9 She was buried in Woodbine Cemetery at Puyallup. Robert died in 1999, and his name is on the flat granite marker he shares with her: HEGNAUER / ROBERT 1916 — 1999 / CAROLYN 1932 — 19[90] (the last figures are hidden by the grass in the photograph).1, 10

    The Nevada marriage index names Robert L. Hegnauer and Carolyn R. Mattoon, both residents of Washington, the same couple as on the Washington certificate of 22 Mar 1982. The Reno date is before the decree that dissolved his first marriage, so the Washington marriage is the preferred one.
