Madge Maxine Curtis was born in Iowa in 1915, the third daughter of Arthur Garfield Curtis and Hazel Lucile Cook.1–3 In January 1920, aged four, she was living with her parents, her older sisters Verna and Dorothy and her baby brother, Arthur, on East Fourth Street in Spencer, Clay County, Iowa, where her father farmed.1 Later that year the family moved to Chippewa County, Minnesota, where her sister Adelaide was born. In April 1930 fourteen-year-old "Madge M." was living with her parents in the village of Maynard, with Arthur, Adelaide and the baby of the family, Inez.2

Madge died at Maynard on 9 June 1931, aged only fifteen or sixteen, and was buried in the Granite Falls City Cemetery, a few miles away.3–4 Her father was buried in the same cemetery thirty-five years later.5 When her mother died in 1978, Madge was not among the surviving daughters, and her sister Adelaide's obituary in 1995 recalled that she had been "preceded in death by a sister, Madge Curtis".6–7
