Indiana and Iowa

Arthur Garfield Curtis was born on 20 October 1880 in northwestern Indiana, a son of Nathan Curtis and Louise (Louisa) Thomas. His death certificate gives his birthplace as Valparaiso, the seat of Porter County; he himself wrote Otis, a village a dozen miles away in LaPorte County, on his draft card in 1942.1–3 His given names echo the Republican ticket of that autumn, James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur. That June the census had found his parents in Jackson Township, Porter County, with his elder sister Viola.4 By 1900 the family had moved west to Knox County, Illinois, where Nathan rented a farm in Ontario Township. Arthur, eighteen, was not at home: he was boarding with Otto F. Rylander's family in the same township and working as a farm laborer.5–6

About 1909 Arthur married Hazel Lucile Cook, a Nebraska girl eleven years his junior; no record of the wedding has been found. In April 1910 they had been married a year and were renting a farm at Gillett Grove, in Clay County, northwestern Iowa, where Arthur farmed on his own account; Hazel was eighteen, and their first child, Verna, was a baby.7–8 His parents had retired to Spencer, the county seat (see his father's profile). The next three children were also born in Iowa: Dorothy about 1911, Madge about 1915 and Arthur Nathan in 1918.3 In January 1920 the family was renting a house at 802 East Fourth Street in Spencer, the county seat, and Arthur gave his occupation as farmer.3

Chippewa County, Minnesota

Within a few months the Curtises moved north to western Minnesota. Their daughter Adelaide Louise was born at Montevideo, in Chippewa County, on 31 May 1920, and their youngest, Inez, in neighbouring Yellow Medicine County on 11 July 1929.9–10 By April 1930 they were living in the village of Maynard, in Chippewa County, with Madge, Arthur, Adelaide and the baby, Inez; Verna and Dorothy had left home.11

The Curtises stayed at Maynard through the Depression. In April 1940 Arthur, fifty-nine, had had twenty-five weeks' work the year before as a carpenter on a government construction project, earning $515, and the family rented their home. He had gone to school through the eighth grade. Hazel, their son Arthur, then twenty-one, and ten-year-old Inez were at home.12 In 1942, at sixty-one, Arthur registered in the "old man's" draft. He was still at Maynard, working for the W.P.A. at nearby Clara City, and he gave his wife as the person who would always know where he was.2 The family had lost their daughter Madge in June 1931, aged fifteen or sixteen; she was buried in the Granite Falls City Cemetery.13 During the war Arthur and Hazel moved to Minneapolis, where their daughter Adelaide was living: the 1944 city directory lists Arthur G. Curtis, a factory worker, and his wife Hazel L. at 2740 Aldrich Avenue.14

Later years

By 1950 they had gone west. In April that year Arthur, sixty-nine, and Hazel were living at 11 North Street in Alturas, the seat of Modoc County in northeastern California, where he was superintendent of a laundry, working sixty-six hours a week, and she was a counter girl in the laundry.15 According to her obituary, Hazel came to the Carrolls area of Cowlitz County, Washington, in 1952, the rural district south of Kelso where their daughter Adelaide Hegnauer's family also lived (see Adelaide's profile).16 Arthur came west too. In his last years his home was at 202 Ross Road, Kelso, but for six years he lived in the Cowlitz Valley Nursing Home at Longview, and there he died of pneumonia on 8 March 1966, aged eighty-five. Hazel gave the details for his death certificate. His body was sent back to Minnesota, to the Anderson Mortuary at Montevideo, and he was buried in the Granite Falls City Cemetery, where Madge lay.1, 17 When Hazel died in January 1978 her obituary named no husband among her survivors, but it named all their surviving children: four daughters and their son Arthur.16 Adelaide's Social Security record and her death certificate name her father as Arthur G. Curtis, and her obituary says she was born "to Arthur and Hazel Curtis".18–20

    From his death certificate (informant his wife Hazel). His own 1942 draft card gives the same day at Otis, Indiana, a village in LaPorte County about twelve miles from Valparaiso (see Research Notes). Aged 39 in January 1920, 49 in April 1930 and 59 in April 1940, born in Indiana each time.

    The date is proven: his World War II draft card, which he signed, his death certificate, the Social Security Death Index and Find a Grave all give 20 Oct 1880, and his census ages fit (the 1900 census gives Oct 1881, age 18: the month agrees, the year is one out). The place is in conflict: the death certificate (informant his wife) gives Valparaiso, Porter County, and his own draft card gives Otis, LaPorte County, which Find a Grave follows. Valparaiso is kept as the preferred place, as on the Ancestry tree, with Otis as the alternative; no birth record has been seen.

    Arthur's own line of the 1910 census (index read 27 Sep 2026) gives the years of the present marriage as 1, so they married about 1909 (roughly between April 1908 and April 1910). The same household has Hazel as his wife and Verna, born April 1910. The 1920 census at Spencer lists A. G. Curtiss with his wife Hazel and four children, and the censuses of 1930 and 1940 (Maynard) and 1950 (Alturas, California) list Arthur and Hazel together.

In June 1880, four months before his birth, his parents were living in Jackson Township, Porter County, so a birth in Porter County is likely; that does not rule out Otis, just across the county line.4 The 1900 census gives Oct 1881 and age 18, a year late; the month agrees.6 Valparaiso is kept as the preferred place (it is also the Ancestry tree's), with Otis as the alternative; his own statement may well be the better one, and an Indiana birth or baptismal record, or the 1880 census of LaPorte and Porter counties, should decide it. The old triage's "Otis County" does not exist.
  • Father (resolved: Nathan Curtis, proven): His death certificate names his father as Nathan Curtis and his mother as Louise Thomas, which settles the question: WikiTree's Randolph Curtis is wrong.1 The earlier reasoning, which had already preferred Nathan, follows. WikiTree (Curtis-3938) shows his father as Randolph Curtis (Curtis-3943) of Logan County, Illinois; the family tree has Nathan K. Curtis (H0041).24, 23 Nathan is preferred, for these reasons. (1) The 1920 census gives both of Arthur's parents' birthplace as Indiana.3 According to WikiTree, Randolph Curtis was born and died in Logan County, Illinois (1853–1925), and his wife, Adelia Jane Briggs, was born in Ohio; their known children were all born in Illinois, from 1883.24 (2) Arthur was born in Indiana (every census), and the tree and WikiTree agree on Valparaiso, Porter County; the tree gives Nathan's birthplace as Hebron, also in Porter County. (3) The tree gives Nathan's death at Spencer, Clay County, Iowa, in 1926; Arthur was farming at Spencer in 1920, and Hazel was living in Clay County in 1910.3, 8 (4) Arthur's only son, born at Spencer in 1918, was named Arthur Nathan.25, 11 The death certificate has since proved the point, and Find a Grave also names his father Nathan and his mother Louisa.17 See also H0041.

Arthur's own line of the 1910 census at Gillett Grove, Clay County, gives him as married for one year, with Hazel, 18, and their baby Verna, so the marriage was about 1909.7, 8 The study earlier had only "before Jan 1920, probably by early 1910". Clay County, Iowa, marriage records of 1908–1910, and those of Knox County, Illinois, and Nemaha County, Nebraska, are the places to look.
  • 1900 in Knox County, Illinois: "Aurther G. Curtis", 18, born Oct 1881 in Indiana, boarder and farm laborer in Otto F.
