Arthur Nathan Curtis was born on 10 May 1918 at Spencer, in Clay County, northwestern Iowa, the only son of Arthur Garfield Curtis and Hazel Lucile Cook.1–2 His middle name was probably that of his grandfather, Nathan K. Curtis (see his profile). In January 1920 the family was living on East Fourth Street in Spencer, where his father farmed, with Arthur's older sisters Verna, Dorothy and Madge.2

Later that year the family moved to Chippewa County, Minnesota, where his sister Adelaide was born, and by 1930 they were living in the village of Maynard.3 In 1930 Arthur, eleven, was at home with Madge, Adelaide and the baby, Inez. Ten years later, at twenty-one, he was still living with his parents and Inez at Maynard, where his father was working as a carpenter on a government construction project.4

By 1978 Arthur had moved to Alturas, in the high country of Modoc County in northeastern California, and he was named there, "Arthur Curtis of Alturas, Calif.", among the survivors of his mother that January.5 He died on 7 November 1984 at Klamath Falls, Oregon, aged sixty-six, and was buried two days later in Alturas Cemetery.1 When his sister Adelaide died in 1995, her obituary recorded that her brother Arthur had died before her.6
