Wesoła

Margaret Worek was born Małgorzata Senkowska in Wesoła, a village in the district of Brzozów and the parish of Barycz, in Galicia, the part of Poland then ruled by Austria. She gave her birth date as 10 August 1886.1–3 Her parents were Józef Senkowski and Antonina Pomykał; Senkowska is the feminine form of the family name.3 Polish was her mother tongue. Unlike her husband, she learned to read and write, and she had six years of schooling.4–5

The Zeeland

In the autumn of 1907, aged twenty and single, Małgorzata left her father in Wesoła and sailed from Antwerp on the steamer Zeeland. The ship reached New York on 12 November 1907. At Ellis Island she was entered as Malgorzata Senkowska, five feet one inch tall, fair, with brown hair and brown eyes, carrying ten dollars. She gave her father, Josef Senkowski of Wesoła, as her nearest relative at home, and she was going to a friend, Paweł Siba (the name is hard to read), in Joliet, Illinois.2 As general background: the Zeeland and the Vaderland, on which her future husband had crossed two years before, were Red Star Line steamers on the Antwerp–New York run, a route taken by many emigrants from Galicia.

Marriage and children

Less than two years later, on 26 July 1909, at Holy Cross, one of Joliet's Polish Catholic parishes, Margarita Senkowska, twenty-one, married Martin (Martinus) Worek, twenty-eight, who came from Wesoła too. He had come to America in 1905 (see his profile).3–4

Their first child, Stanley, was born in Joliet on 13 August 1910.6 Andrew followed on 7 November 1912, Julia on 19 June 1915, Mary on 13 March 1918 and Joseph on 19 March 1922. The last, a daughter, was born in 1925 (possibly living).4, 7–11 In the parish registers she is Margarita, the Latin form of her name, or Margorzata; to the census takers she was Margaret.10–12

Hacker Avenue

In January 1920 the family lived on Hacker Avenue in Joliet: Martin, a laborer, "Margret", thirty-two, their four children and two boarders. The enumerator spelled the name Warich.12 The city directories list Martin and Margaret on Hacker Avenue in 1925, and at no. 209 in 1927,13–14 and by 1930 they owned the house, valued at $2,500. Martin worked in the merchant mill of a steel mill. Neither he nor Margaret had become a citizen. All six children were at home, from Stanley, nineteen, to the youngest, five.4

Widowhood

On 27 September 1932, in the depths of the Depression, Martin died at Joliet.15 Margaret was forty-six, with six children, the youngest seven. She kept a home for them. In 1940 she owned a house, valued at $2,000, at 1109 Harrison Street, and was working as a dishwasher: in all of 1939 she had found twelve weeks' work and earned sixty dollars. With her were her sons Stanley, Andrew and Joseph, who was then in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and her youngest daughter. Mary had married and gone.5 That October Stanley, who worked for the American Steel and Wire Company, registered for the draft and named his mother as his next of kin.6

Citizenship

Margaret had lived in America for thirty-three years as an alien. By April 1941 she had begun the process of becoming a citizen: the immigration service evidently looked up her arrival on the Zeeland and wrote her file number and the date, 15 April 1941, across her line of the 1907 passenger list. Her index card gives her name in its Polish form, Małgorzata (spelled Malgozata), and her birth date, 10 August 1886.1–2 By the census of 1950 she was a naturalized citizen.16

Last years

In April 1950 Margaret, sixty-four and widowed, was living alone in the house at no. 1109, still working a few hours a week as a cleaning maid.16 Her children had left home. She died on 10 January 1962, aged seventy-five, or seventy-six by the parish register, and was buried on 13 January in Resurrection Cemetery at Romeoville, just north of Joliet, rather than beside Martin in Holy Cross Cemetery.17–18 Her flat granite marker, with a cross, reads simply: MOTHER / MARGARET WOREK / 1885 – 1962.18

    In Wesoła, district of Brzozów, in Austrian Galicia. The date is her own statement to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (about 1941). Her gravestone gives 1885 and her marriage register implies about 1888; both are kept as alternates (see Research Notes). No baptism record has been found.

    The only full date is her own: born 10 Aug 1886 in Poland, on her naturalization index card (about 1941). Her ages in later life fit it within a year: 44 in April 1930, with an age at first marriage of 23; 64 in April 1950; and 76 in the parish register at her burial in January 1962. Her ages as a young woman point a year or two later: 20 on her passenger list of November 1907, 21 at her marriage in July 1909 and 32 in the census of January 1920, all about 1887–88; 48 in 1940 (about 1892) is an outlier. Her gravestone and Find a Grave give 1885. The date she gave the government herself is preferred; 1885 (gravestone) and about 1888 (marriage register) are kept as alternates. For the place, her passenger list gives Wesola as her birthplace and her last residence, and the 1909 register gives Wesoła, district of Brzozów, parish of Barycz; the censuses give Poland. The Polish parish registers have not yet been searched.

The witnesses and the priest are on the facing page (not read). The marriage ended with his death in 1932; she did not marry again.

    The Holy Cross marriage register (image read) records the marriage on 26 July 1909 of Martinus Worek, 28, son of Andreas W[orek] and Catharina Pęcherek, and Margarita Senkowska, 21, daughter of Joseph S[enkowski] and Antonina Pomykał, both of Wesoła in the district of Brzozów. The bride's father is "Josef Senkowski, Wesola" on her passenger list of 1907, their daughter Mary was baptised in the same church in 1918 as the child of Martinus and Margarita Senkowska, and in 1930 Martin and Margaret gave ages at first marriage (29 and 23) that point to 1909. She was a widow, still named Worek, in 1940, 1950 and at her burial in 1962. No civil marriage licence has been searched.

    Her index card carries a file number, 11-306528 [reading], that is also written across her line of the 1907 passenger list with the date 4/15/41; annotations of this kind were made when the Immigration and Naturalization Service checked an immigrant's arrival record for naturalization (general background). The card's date of naturalization is blank. The censuses call her an alien in 1930 and 1940 and naturalized in 1950, so she became a citizen between 1941 and April 1950. The petition and certificate have not been seen.

The 1940 and 1950 census images and the Joliet directories would settle it: a search of Ancestry's directory collection lists entries for Margaret Worek in 1933, 1937, 1938, 1942, 1945, 1947, 1955 and 1956, not yet opened.13 In 1962 the parish register gives her address as "510 Abe St." [reading; perhaps Ada St.].17
  • Citizenship: See the Citizenship section. Only the index card has been found. The petition and certificate would be in the records of the court that naturalized her: the U.S. District Court in Chicago (National Archives at Chicago) or a county court such as the Will County Circuit Court.1
  • Widowhood: No second marriage has been found. She was a widow named Worek in 1940 and 1950, and was buried as Margaret Worek.5, 16, 17
  • Death and burial: The parish register of the dead gives her death on 10 Jan 1962 and burial on 13 Jan 1962 at Resurrection, aged 76.17 Ancestry files the register under St. Scholastica Parish, Woodridge, but the burials on its pages are of Joliet people and it also holds her husband's burial of 1932; it probably belongs to Holy Cross. The register does not say where she died; Joliet is inferred. Find a Grave's memorial, with a photograph of her marker (1885–1962), is at Resurrection Cemetery, Romeoville.18 The Illinois death certificate is not online, and she has no Social Security death index entry of her own. Her husband is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Joliet.
  • Obituary: Not found. Newspapers.com has nothing for Worek in Illinois papers of 10–20 Jan 1962; the Joliet Herald-News for 1962 does not appear to be searchable there. The Herald-News of 11–13 Jan 1962, on microfilm at the Joliet Public Library, is the next place to look.
  • Children: Six children are known: Stanley (1910), Andrew (1912), Julia (1915), Mary (1918), Joseph (1922) and a daughter born in 1925, who may be living and is not named here.6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 4 Find a Grave links four of them to her memorial: Stanley (1910–1995), Andrew (1912–1966), Julia M. Worek Bahor (1915–2006) and Joseph (1922–2018).18
