A Polish family in Joliet

Mary Ann Worek was born on 13 March 1918 in Joliet, Will County, Illinois, a daughter of Martin Worek and Margaret (Margarita) Senkowska.^1–3 Three and a half weeks later, on 7 April, she was baptized Maria at Holy Cross, a Polish Catholic parish in Joliet, where her parents had been married.^{1, 4}

Her parents came from the same village, Wesoła, in the district of Brzozów and the parish of Barycz, in Galicia, the Polish province then under Austrian rule.⁴ Martin, born in 1881, came to America in 1905, and Margaret, some five years younger, followed in 1907. They were married at Holy Cross on 26 July 1909.^4–6 Mary was the fourth of their six known children. Stanley, Andrew and Julia were born before her, and Joseph and Katherine after.^6–7

Hacker Avenue

When the census taker came in January 1920, the family was living on Hacker Avenue in Joliet: Martin and Margaret, their four children, two-year-old Mary among them, and two boarders. He spelled the surname Warich.⁷ By 1930 the Woreks owned their house, 209 Hacker Avenue, valued at $2,500. Martin, fifty, worked in the merchant mill of a Joliet steel works. He had never learned to read or write, though Margaret could, and both gave Polish as their mother tongue; neither had become a citizen. Twelve-year-old Mary was at school. At home with her were Stanley, 19, Andrew, 17, Julia, 15, Joseph, 7, and her little sister Kate, 5.⁶

On 27 September 1932, in the depths of the Depression, Mary's father died at Joliet, aged fifty. She was fourteen. He was buried three days later in Holy Cross Cemetery.⁵ Margaret was left to keep the family going. In 1935 seventeen-year-old Mary was listed in the city directory at the Hacker Avenue house,⁸ and in November 1936, in the first weeks of the new Social Security system, she applied for a number as Mary Anna Worek, probably because she was working. She signed the card simply "Mary Worek".² She had eleven years of schooling.³ By 1940 her widowed mother owned a house at 1109 Harrison Street and was working as a dishwasher. Three of Mary's brothers and her youngest sister, Katherine, were still at home, but Mary had married and gone.⁹

First marriage

Mary married for the first time at nineteen, in 1937. That year's Joliet directory still listed her at the family house on Hacker Avenue, as a factory worker.¹⁰ On 12 May 1937 she and Ervinus Dale Chrisman, who went by Erwin D., took out a licence and were married the same day in Lake County, Indiana, just across the state line.^11–12 He was a native of Iowa, born on 23 March 1911.¹³ Five months later, on 10 October 1937, they were married again in the Church, at St. Thaddeus in Joliet, where the register enters her as Maria Worek, daughter of Martin and Margaret (see Research Notes).¹⁴ The couple made their home in Lake County, Indiana. A son was born to them there in 1939 (possibly living), and by February 1940 her Social Security record called her Mary Worek Chrisman.² In 1945 the Gary city directory listed Mary A. Chrisman at 528 Porter Street, with her husband Erwin D.¹⁵ How the marriage ended has not been found. Erwin later lived in California, and he died in Los Angeles County on 27 January 1981.¹³

Woodrow Wilson

By early 1950 Mary was living at Pittsburg, in Crawford County, Kansas. On 18 March 1950 she and Woodrow E. Wilson, also of Pittsburg, went south to Bentonville, in the northwest corner of Arkansas, took out a licence and were married the same day by a justice of the peace. Both were thirty-two, and the bride was recorded under her married name, Mary Chrisman.^16–17 Her Social Security record had already listed her as Mary Wilson that January.² Woodrow had grown up on Grays Harbor, on the Washington coast (see his profile).

Mary and Woodrow had four children, born between 1950 and 1957 (living). The family moved to Washington, and by about 1954 Mary was living in Grays Harbor County, her home for the next forty years.³ Her marriage to Woodrow did not last. He married again in September 1964 (see his profile), and four months later so did she.¹⁸

Grays Harbor

On 19 January 1965, at a quarter past nine in the evening, Mary Ann Wilson of Aberdeen married her third husband, William D. Evans of Hoquiam, a logging-truck driver born in North Dakota in 1910, before a justice of the peace at Cosmopolis, the mill town on the Chehalis River next to Aberdeen.^18–19 From February 1966 her Social Security record called her Mary Ann Evans.² By 1972 the couple were living at 812¼ Stewart Street in Aberdeen, which was to be Mary's home for the rest of her life. William died of heart disease at Grays Harbor Community Hospital on 31 October 1972, aged sixty-two; Mary gave the particulars for his death certificate, and he was buried in Fern Hill Cemetery.¹⁹

Mary was still Mary A. Evans when, on 25 June 1977, in Grays Harbor County, she married Glen Bertram Farnsworth, a machine operator in a plywood mill, born like her in the last years of the First World War.^20–22 They had eleven years together at Stewart Street. Glen died at St. Joseph Hospital in Aberdeen on 31 July 1988, and Mary, who again gave the particulars for the certificate, was left a widow for the second time.^{3, 21}

For most of her working life Mary worked in a cannery; her death certificate gives her usual occupation as cannery worker in a cranberry cannery.³ Cranberries are one of the crops of the Grays Harbor coast. She was still living on Stewart Street in her last years; her own death certificate gives the number as 812½.^{3, 23}

Last days

Mary died a little after noon on 28 March 1994, after a stroke, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was seventy-six.^{3, 24} Two days later she was cremated at the Fern Hill Crematory, and her ashes were laid in the urn garden of Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, under the flat granite marker she shares with Glen: "FARNSWORTH / GLEN B. 1917 — 1988 HUSBAND & FATHER / MARY A. 1918 — 1994 WIFE & MOTHER".^{3, 22} She was the mother of four children (living). No obituary for her has yet been found.

The date is in the register of her baptism at Holy Cross Church three and a half weeks later; the town is named in her own Social Security record and on her death certificate. No civil birth record has been searched (Illinois births after 1916 are restricted).

The Holy Cross baptism register, written at the time, gives her birth on 13 March 1918, with her parents' names. Her own Social Security record (from 1936) gives 13 Mar 1918 at Joliet, Will County, and her death certificate 13 Mar 1918 at Joliet; the SSDI and Find a Grave agree on the date. Her ages in the censuses of 1920 (2) and 1930 (12, born Illinois) fit, and her parents lived in Joliet from their marriage there in 1909 until at least 1940. WikiTree's "about 1920" is superseded.

Both names match the St. Thaddeus register of 10 Oct 1937, the year and place fit (Lake County adjoins the Joliet area), and a 1939 Indiana birth certificate and a 1945 Gary directory show the couple living in Lake County afterwards.

Cause: embolic stroke, due to hypertensive heart failure with atrial fibrillation; peripheral vascular disease a contributing condition; natural causes; no autopsy. Washington death certificate, state file 008941 (1994). The Social Security indexes, followed by Find a Grave, FamilySearch and the family tree, give 15 Mar 1994 (see Research Notes).

Her Washington death certificate (image read) gives death on 28 March 1994 at 12:15 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen, aged 76, with her birth date and birthplace and the Social Security number of her own Social Security record. It was signed by her physician on 29 March, and she was cremated on 30 March, a consistent sequence. The Washington Digital Archives index and Ancestry's Washington death index (certificate 008941) agree. The SSDI and the Social Security claims index give 15 Mar 1994, and Find a Grave, FamilySearch and the family tree copy that date; the gravestone gives the year only. The certificate, made at the time, is preferred; 15 Mar 1994 is kept as an alternate, the Social Security date.

Research notes

Identity: The records are linked as one woman as follows. (1) The Holy Cross baptism register gives Maria Worek, born 13 Mar 1918, daughter of Martinus Worek and Margarita Senkowska.¹ (2) In 1920 and 1930 Mary, aged 2 and 12, born in Illinois, is the daughter of Martin and Margaret Worek on Hacker Avenue, Joliet, and in 1935 Mary Worek is listed at the same house, 209 Hacker Avenue.^{7, 6, 8} (3) Her Social Security application (Nov 1936) gives Mary Anna Worek, born 13 Mar 1918 at Joliet, father Martin Worek, mother Margaret; the same record lists her later names in order: Mary Worek Chrisman (1940), Mary Wilson (1950), Mary Ann Wilson (1963), Mary Ann Evans (1966) and Mary Ann Farnsworth (1983).² (4) The St. Thaddeus register of 1937 gives the marriage of Maria Worek, daughter of Martinus and Margarita, to Ervinus Dale Chrisman.¹⁴ (5) In 1950 Mary Chrisman, 32 (so born about 1917–18), married Woodrow E. Wilson.¹⁶ (6) In 1965 Mary Ann Wilson of Aberdeen married William D. Evans of Hoquiam, and at his death in 1972 his certificate named his surviving spouse "Mary Worek", with Mary Evans as informant.^{18, 19} (7) In 1977 Mary A. Evans married Glen B. Farnsworth, and at his death in 1988 his certificate named his spouse "Mary Worek", with Mary Farnsworth as informant, at the same Stewart Street address.^{20, 21} (8) Her death certificate gives Mary Ann Farnsworth, born 13 Mar 1918 at Joliet, with the Social Security number of her 1936 application, which is also the number in the SSDI.^{3, 25} (9) The gravestone she shares with Glen B. Farnsworth reads "MARY A. 1918 — 1994".²²
Name: She was baptized Maria, the Latin form of Mary used in the registers; the 1937 marriage register also calls her Maria.^{1, 14} At eighteen she gave her name to the Social Security Administration as Mary Anna Worek, but she signed "Mary Worek", and from the 1960s her records give Mary Ann: her Social Security record from 1963, the 1965 marriage certificate, which she signed "Mary Ann Wilson", and her death certificate.^{2, 18, 3} Find a Grave has "Mary Anna Worek Farnsworth" and the gravestone "Mary A.".²² This profile uses Mary Ann, the name of her adult life. The 1920 census enumerator spelled the surname Warich.⁷ Her married surnames, in order, were Chrisman, Wilson, Evans and Farnsworth.²
Birth: The date, 13 Mar 1918, is in the baptism register, written at the time, and in every later record that gives one: her Social Security record, the SSDI, her death certificate and Find a Grave.^{1, 2, 25, 3, 22} Joliet is named in her Social Security record and on her death certificate; she was baptized in Joliet, and her parents lived there from 1909 to at least 1940.^{2, 3, 1, 9} No civil birth record has been searched for: Illinois birth records after 1916 are restricted. WikiTree (as found in Sept 2026) gave "about 1920".
Age in 1920: The census, taken in January 1920, gives her age as 2; FamilySearch's index reads it as 2 years 7 months. She was 1 year 10 months. The image has not been read on Ancestry.⁷
Her mother's name: Her parents' marriage register (1909) and her own baptism register (1918) give her mother as Margarita Senkowska, the feminine form of Senkowski; the 1937 register has "Synakowska" as read.^{4, 1, 14} The censuses call her Margaret (Margret in 1920).^{7, 6, 9} Other forms are not her name: "Serckovska" (the index of the baptism), "Unk" (her Social Security record, as "Margaret Unk") and "Anna Woreck" (the death certificate).^{1, 2, 3} The family trees use Senkowski, and FamilySearch "Senskowski".
Informant's errors on the death certificate: The certificate gives her father as "Unk" [unknown] and her mother as "Anna Woreck". Her mother was Margaret (Margarita) Senkowska, and her father Martin Worek, as her baptism, the censuses and her own Social Security application show.^{3, 1, 6, 2} The informant, a member of the family (living), evidently did not know her grandparents' names; "Woreck" is a spelling of Mary's own maiden name, not her mother's. The Digital Archives index repeats "Woreck" as her mother's maiden name. The rest of the certificate agrees with the other records.
Date of death (conflict): Her death certificate gives 28 Mar 1994, at 12:15, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. Her physician signed it on 29 March, and she was cremated on 30 March, so the dates run in a consistent order. The Digital Archives index and Ancestry's Washington death index agree.^{3, 24} The SSDI and her Social Security claims entry give 15 Mar 1994, and Find a Grave, FamilySearch and the family tree follow them; the gravestone gives only the year.^{25, 2, 22} The certificate, made at the time by her physician and the funeral home, is preferred; 15 Mar is kept as an alternate, the Social Security Administration's date. Why the SSA recorded a date thirteen days early is not known.
Cremation and urn burial: The family tree had "Burial after 15 Mar 1994, Aberdeen". Her death certificate records cremation on 30 Mar 1994 at the Fern Hill Crematory, and Find a Grave places her in the urn garden of Fern Hill Cemetery, plot D/1/8th Urn Garden, under a marker shared with Glen B. Farnsworth.^{3, 22} Both are recorded: the cremation, and the interment of her ashes at Fern Hill, on a date not known.
Four marriages: Her Social Security record lists her names in the order Worek, Chrisman, Wilson, Evans, Farnsworth. Its dates are when each name reached the Social Security Administration, not the dates of the marriages, but they give the order, and a marriage record has been found for each.^{2, 14, 16, 18, 20} How the first two marriages ended has not been found; the third ended with William D. Evans's death in 1972, and the fourth with Glen B. Farnsworth's in 1988.^{19, 21} Washington's state divorce index begins only in 1968.
First marriage (date): The register of St. Thaddeus, Joliet, reads "Oct. 10" [1937] for entry no. 22; the next entries are no. 23 of Oct. 17 and no. 24 of Nov. 25. Ancestry's index gives 10 Dec 1937. The register's order supports October, and 10 Oct 1937 is recorded; the image should be checked again.¹⁴ The civil marriage came first: two Indiana indexes give a licence and marriage in Lake County, Indiana, on 12 May 1937, five months before the church marriage.^{11, 12} The Lake County licence and return, which would give ages, birthplaces and parents, have not been seen.
First husband (now known to be deceased): The St. Thaddeus register gives the groom as Ervinus Dale Chrisman, baptised at St. Paul's, Davenport, Iowa, on 16 Apr 1911 [reading], son of Glenn and Loretta Vroman; the Indiana indexes give Erwin, and the 1945 Gary directory Erwin D.^{14, 11, 15} Until 27 Sep 2026 he was treated here as possibly living and named only by his surname. The California death index gives Erwin D. Chrisman, born 23 Mar 1911 in Iowa, died 27 Jan 1981 in Los Angeles County, mother's maiden name "Broman", and the SSDI gives the same birth date, a number issued in Indiana and a last residence at El Monte, California.¹³ They are identified with him by the English form of his Latin given names, the Iowa birth three weeks before the Davenport baptism, the mother's maiden name ("Broman" for Vroman) and the Indiana-issued number (the couple lived at Gary). His death certificate has not been read. Mary is not in her mother's household in 1940; the couple were living in Lake County, Indiana, where a son was born in 1939 and where the Gary directory lists them in 1945, so the 1940 census should be searched in Gary and Lake County.^{11, 15, 9} A Mary Crisman at Kelso, Washington, in 1940 is not her: that Mary was 20, born in Washington, and living in Seattle in 1935, when Mary Worek was in Joliet.⁸
Marriage to Woodrow Wilson: The marriage at Bentonville, Arkansas, on 18 Mar 1950 was found in this pass; earlier searches of the Washington marriage records (see his profile) had found no marriage between them, because it took place in Arkansas.^{16, 17} Both were of Pittsburg, Kansas; why they were there is not known. Her Social Security record lists her as Mary Wilson from January 1950, two months before the wedding.² Neither of them has been found in the 1950 census; searches in Washington and for Mary Wilson and Mary Chrisman born in Illinois have found nothing, and Pittsburg, Kansas, has not yet been searched ward by ward. The marriage had ended by September 1964, when Woodrow married Ruth E. (Lefaive) Evans (see his profile); no divorce record has been found. She married again in January 1965 as Mary Ann Wilson.¹⁸
Third marriage: Ancestry's index of the Washington marriage records spells the groom's surname "Eraus"; the certificate itself (image read) and the bride's later name show Evans.^{18, 2} His death certificate (image read, 27 Sep 2026) shows that William D. Evans died on 31 Oct 1972, still married to her: "Mary Worek", the informant's entry for his surviving spouse, is her maiden name, as the form asks for a wife.¹⁹ Until then he had been treated as possibly living. He had probably been the first husband of Ruth E. (Lefaive) Evans, who married Woodrow Wilson in Sep 1964, four months before Mary married William (see his profile). She was still Mary A. Evans in June 1977.²⁰
Fourth marriage: Only the index has been seen for the marriage of 25 Jun 1977; the licence was issued in Pierce County.²⁰ Glen Bertram Farnsworth died at Aberdeen on 31 Jul 1988; his death certificate names his spouse as "Mary Worek" and the informant as Mary Farnsworth, of 812¼ Stewart Street. Mary was a widow at her death.^{21, 22, 3}
Coming to Washington: No record says when or how she came west. The known trail is Joliet (to 1937), Lake County, Indiana (1937–1945, Gary in 1945), Pittsburg, Kansas (March 1950), and Grays Harbor County from about 1954, the "40 yrs." of her death certificate.^{14, 16, 3} Woodrow had grown up in Grays Harbor County (see his profile), so they probably came to Washington together in the early 1950s.
Addresses: The death certificates of her husbands give 812¼ Stewart Street, Aberdeen, in 1972 and 1988; an address index gives 812 Stewart Street in 1991, and her own death certificate 812½ Stewart Street.^{19, 21, 23, 3} The unit readings differ, but it is evidently the same house, her home for more than twenty years. An undated address-index entry for an "Ann M. Wilson" in Aberdeen has not been linked to her: it has no date or birth year, and many Wilsons lived in Aberdeen.
Obituary: Not found. Newspapers.com has no notice of her death in Washington newspapers in 1994 (searched for Mary Farnsworth and Mary Ann Farnsworth, and for Farnsworth with Aberdeen); the Aberdeen Daily World for 1994 does not appear to be on the site. The Daily World for 29 Mar–5 Apr 1994 is the next place to look.
Not her: Mary Prudence Worek, born 1 Mar 1918 in Chicago, daughter of Frank Worek and Bernice Sczech, in her father's Arizona naturalization file, in the Social Security claims index and in the 1940 census in Chicago; and Mary Olek Worek, who died about 2009 in Pennsylvania.
Brothers and sisters: Her parents' known children were Stanley (Stanislaus, 1910–1995), Andrew (born about 1912–13), Julia (born about 1915), Mary (1918), Joseph (1922–2018) and Katherine (1925–2014), from the censuses of 1920, 1930 and 1940 (see their profiles).^{7, 6, 9} Katherine's obituary of 2014 names her sister as "Mary Farnsworth". The 1920 index gives Stanley's age as 19, a misreading of 9: he was 19 in 1930 and 29 in 1940. In 1940 Joseph was in the Civilian Conservation Corps.⁹
Her father: Martin Worek was born on 11 Nov 1881 in Poland according to the Illinois death index, which fits his age of 28 at his marriage in July 1909; the 1930 census gives 50 (born about 1880).^{5, 4, 6} He died at Joliet on 27 Sep 1932 and was buried on 30 Sep 1932 in Holy Cross Cemetery, Joliet.⁵ His father was Andreas (Andrew) Worek and his mother Catharina Pęcherek; Margaret's parents were Joseph Senkowski and Antonina Pomykał.^{4, 5}
Children: Five children are known: a son born in Indiana in 1939, from her first marriage (a 1939 Indiana birth certificate naming the couple as parents; possibly living), and four children with Woodrow Wilson, born between 1950 and 1957, all living. None is named here.
