Stanley Worek was born in Joliet, Will County, Illinois, on 13 August 1910, the first child of Martin Worek and Margaret (Margarita) Senkowska, Polish immigrants from the village of Wesoła in Austrian Galicia, who had married in Joliet the summer before.1–2 The next day he was baptized at Holy Cross, the Polish parish where his parents had been married; in the parish books he was Stanislaus.3 He grew up on Hacker Avenue, the eldest of six: after him came Andrew, Julia, Mary, Joseph and Katherine.4–5 By 1930 his parents owned their house at 209 Hacker Avenue, and nineteen-year-old Stanley was working in a merchant mill, the same work his father did in one of Joliet's steel mills.5

The steel and wire works

His father died in September 1932, when Stanley was twenty-two.6 Stanley stayed with his mother. In April 1940 he was twenty-nine and living in the house she owned at 1109 Harrison Street, with his brothers Andrew and Joseph and his sister Katherine.7 On 16 October 1940 he registered for the draft at Joliet. He was working for the American Steel and Wire Company, and he named his mother as his next of kin. The registrar described him as 5 feet 8 inches tall and 162 pounds, with a ruddy complexion, brown hair and blue eyes.1

Marriage and later life

On 28 January 1950, at thirty-nine, Stanley married Irene, a widow, at St. Thaddeus Church in Joliet.3 Joliet remained his home. He died on 15 February 1995, at the age of eighty-four, and was buried in Resurrection Cemetery at Romeoville, where his mother had been buried in 1962.2, 8–9 Irene, whom Find a Grave names as Irene M. Worek, also died before his sister Katherine in 2014.8, 10

    The date and the town are on his WWII draft registration of 16 Oct 1940 (index read). The SSDI, his Social Security claims entry and Find a Grave give the same date. His ages fit: 19 in April 1930 and 29 in April 1940; the 1920 index's "19" is a misreading of 9. His parents had married in Joliet in July 1909 and lived there until their deaths, and he was baptised at Holy Cross, Joliet, the next day.
