Wesoła

Martin Worek, Marcin in his own language, came from Wesoła, a village in the district of Brzozów and the parish of Barycz, in Galicia, the part of Poland then ruled by Austria.1–2 According to the Illinois death index he was born on 11 November 1881. That is St. Martin's day, the feast of the saint whose name he bore; his own stated ages suggest a year earlier, about 1880 (see Research Notes).3–5 His parents were Andreas Worek and Catharina Pęcherek. His father was still remembered, as Andrew Worek, when Martin died in 1932.1, 3 Polish was Martin's mother tongue, and he never learned to read or write.4

Nothing more is known of his early years. As general background: Galicia at the end of the nineteenth century was a crowded country of small farms and scarce work, and between the 1880s and the First World War hundreds of thousands of its young men and women left to find work in America.

The Vaderland

Martin was one of them. In December 1905, twenty-five years old and still single, he crossed from Antwerp to New York on the steamer Vaderland. At Ellis Island on 13 December he was entered as Marcin Worek, a Polish laborer and an Austrian subject, whose last home had been Wesoła. He was going to McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to join his brother-in-law, Michał Uziel.2 As Martin was unmarried, Michał was most likely the husband of one of his sisters. McKeesport, on the Monongahela River southeast of Pittsburgh, was a steel town (general background). How long Martin stayed there is not known.

Joliet

By the summer of 1909 he had moved west to Joliet, Illinois, a steel-mill city some forty miles southwest of Chicago. There, on 26 July 1909, at Holy Cross, one of Joliet's Polish Catholic parishes, Martinus Worek, twenty-eight, married Margarita (Margaret) Senkowska, twenty-one. She came from Wesoła too, and had crossed to America two years after him, in 1907.1, 4 The register does not say whether they had known each other at home.

Their first child, Stanley, was born in 1910.4 Andrew followed on 7 November 1912, Julia on 19 June 1915, Mary on 13 March 1918 and Joseph on 19 March 1922. The last, a daughter, was born in 1925 (possibly living). The children were baptised as the children of Martinus, or Marcin, and Margarita.4, 6–10

Hacker Avenue

When the census was taken in January 1920 the family was living on Hacker Avenue: Martin, a laborer, Margaret, their four children and two boarders. The enumerator wrote the name as Warich.11 The 1927 city directory lists Martin, laborer, with Margaret, at 209 Hacker Avenue,12 and by 1930 the Woreks owned the house there, valued at $2,500. Martin, now fifty, worked in the merchant mill of a steel mill, where steel was rolled into bars. He had been in America for twenty-five years but had not become a citizen, and neither had Margaret. He could not read or write, though he could speak English. All six children were at home, from Stanley, nineteen, to the youngest, five.4

The last years

Martin Worek died at Joliet on 27 September 1932, in the third year of the Depression, aged about fifty-one. He was still a laborer, and still living at 209 Hacker Avenue. Three days later, on 30 September, he was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Joliet.3, 5, 13 No gravestone for him has been found. Margaret was left a widow with six children, the youngest only seven. She lived for another thirty years, and she lies in Resurrection Cemetery at Romeoville, not beside him (see her profile).

  • Parents. Andreas W[orek] and Catharina Pęcherek are named in the 1909 register, and the death index names his father as Andrew Worek, born in Poland; FamilySearch's copy of the index has the mother as "Unknown".
  • Immigration. He arrived at New York on the Vaderland from Antwerp on 13 Dec 1905 (FamilySearch index and image; the film's group heading reads "Immigration Records Dec 14, 1905").
  • 1910 census. Not found. Searches of Ancestry and FamilySearch for Martin or Margaret Worek, and for the surname alone in Illinois and Will County, found nothing.
  • WWI draft registration. Not found under Worek. 2, Will County (113 Midland, Rockdale), gives the same birth date, 11 Nov 1881, an alien declarant and a citizen of Austria.
  • Death and burial. The death index and the parish register agree on the dates, 27 and 30 Sep 1932.

    In Wesoła, district of Brzozów, in Austrian Galicia. The date is from the Illinois death index; his own stated ages point to about 1880, which is kept as an alternate (see Research Notes). No baptism record has been found.

    The only full date is 11 Nov 1881, in the Illinois death index of 1932 (Ancestry, and FamilySearch's copy of the same index); the informant is not recorded, and was probably his widow. 11 November is St. Martin's day, the feast of the saint he was named for, so the family may have known the day as his name day as well as his birthday. His own stated ages point a year earlier: 25 on his arrival in December 1905, 28 at his marriage in July 1909, 50 in April 1930 (with an age at first marriage of 29) and 52 in the parish burial register; only the census of January 1920 (37) points later, to 1882. The death index's exact date is preferred and about 1880 is kept as an alternate. For the place, the 1909 marriage register gives Wesoła, district of Brzozów, parish of Barycz, and his passenger list gives Wesoła as his last residence; the censuses and the death index give only Poland. The Polish parish registers have not yet been searched.

The family tree's undated "Arrival 1908" has no source (see Research Notes).

    The Ellis Island list (image read on FamilySearch) gives Marcin Worek, 25, laborer, whose last residence was Wesola, the home village of the 1909 marriage register; his age fits his other ages (born about 1880) and the year fits his own answer in the 1930 census, immigration 1905. Nothing contradicts the identification. The Ancestry index line for him has not been found (probably indexed under a garbled name). The tree's "Arrival 1908" rests on no record found.

The witnesses and the priest are on the facing page (not read). The marriage ended with his death in 1932.

    The Holy Cross marriage register (image read) records the marriage on 26 July 1909 of Martinus Worek, 28, son of Andreas W[orek] and Catharina Pęcherek, and Margarita Senkowska, 21, daughter of Joseph S[enkowski] and Antonina Pomykał, both of Wesoła in the district of Brzozów. The groom's father is "Andrew Worek" in Martin's death index, their daughter Mary was baptised in the same church in 1918 as the child of Martinus and Margarita Senkowska, and in 1930 Martin and Margaret gave ages at first marriage (29 and 23) that point to 1909. No civil marriage licence has been searched.

Which of the places called Wesoła is meant, and how it related to the parish of Barycz, should be settled in the Polish records.
  • Parents: Andreas W[orek] and Catharina Pęcherek are named in the 1909 register, and the death index names his father as Andrew Worek, born in Poland; FamilySearch's copy of the index has the mother as "Unknown".1, 3, 13 Andreas and Andrew are the Latin and English forms of the Polish Andrzej; Catharina is Katarzyna. Nothing else is known of them; no record of either leaving Galicia has been found (none has been searched).
  • Immigration: He arrived at New York on the Vaderland from Antwerp on 13 Dec 1905 (FamilySearch index and image; the film's group heading reads "Immigration Records Dec 14, 1905"). He gave 1905 in 1930.2, 4 Ancestry's index of the same lists has other Vaderland passengers of that day, but no line for Worek under any spelling tried, so his line is probably indexed under a garbled name. The family tree also has an "Arrival 1908" with no source; it may be the answer of the 1920 census, whose image has not been read. It is kept on Ancestry, described as unsupported.
  • McKeesport and Michał Uziel: On arrival he was going to his brother-in-law Michał Uziel at McKeesport, Pennsylvania.2 A single man's brother-in-law was usually his sister's husband, so Martin probably had a married sister in McKeesport. He was in Joliet by July 1909; no record of him between December 1905 and the marriage has been found, and the McKeesport records (the 1910 census for Uziel, the Polish parishes) have not been searched.
  • 1910 census: Not found. Searches of Ancestry and FamilySearch for Martin or Margaret Worek, and for the surname alone in Illinois and Will County, found nothing. They married in Joliet in July 1909 and their son Stanley was born in Joliet in August 1910, so they were almost certainly in Joliet in April 1910, perhaps as boarders or under a garbled name.
  • WWI draft registration: Not found under Worek. A card for "Martin Zowrec", registered 12 Sep 1918 at Local Board Division No. 2, Will County (113 Midland, Rockdale), gives the same birth date, 11 Nov 1881, an alien declarant and a citizen of Austria. It is probably not Martin and has not been saved: the surname is written, and signed, clearly as Zowrec; his nearest relative is a Mrs. Antonia Zowrec in Austria, whereas Martin's wife and four children were with him in Joliet (their daughter Mary had been baptised at Holy Cross that April); and the address is not the family's Hacker Avenue. The shared birth date is a striking coincidence, and the 1917–1919 Joliet directories would show where Martin Worek was living.
  • Citizenship: He was an alien in 1930, and no naturalization record has been found for him (none of the 86 Worek entries in the naturalization indexes is a Martin or Marcin in Illinois).4 His wife was naturalized in the 1940s (see her profile).
  • Death and burial: The death index and the parish register agree on the dates, 27 and 30 Sep 1932.3, 5 His age is 50 in the index (computed from the index's birth date) and 52 in the register. The death certificate (no. 35823) has not been seen, so the cause of death is unknown. The register is a volume of the dead of a Polish parish of Joliet; Ancestry files it under St. Scholastica Parish, Woodridge, but the burials on its pages are of Joliet people, and it probably belongs to Holy Cross. Its cemetery column is blank for him; the death index names Holy Cross Cemetery.13 No gravestone or Find a Grave memorial has been found. His wife, who died in 1962, is buried in a different cemetery, Resurrection at Romeoville.
  • Obituary: Not found. Newspapers.com has nothing for Worek in Illinois papers of 27 Sep–5 Oct 1932; the Joliet Herald-News for 1932 does not appear to be on the site. The Herald-News on microfilm at the Joliet Public Library is the next place to look.
  • Children: Six children are known, all born in Joliet or Illinois: Stanley (1910), Andrew (1912), Julia (1915), Mary (1918), Joseph (1922) and a daughter born in 1925, who may be living and is not named here.11, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 Stanley's and Andrew's baptisms are not indexed under Worek.
  • Polish records: The registers of Barycz parish (and of the parish of the Wesoła in question), in the Przemyśl diocesan archive and the state archives, would give his baptism and his parents' marriage. A proper search of Geneteka has not yet been made.
