Life story
Viola Curtis was the eldest child of Nathan K. Curtis and Louisa Thomas, who had married about 1872. She was born about 1873, most likely in Porter County, in the northwest corner of Indiana, where her parents were living.1–2 In June 1880, when she was six, the census taker found her with her father, a day laborer, and her mother in Jackson Township, Porter County. Four months later her brother Arthur Garfield was born.1
In the 1880s the family moved west to Illinois. By June 1900 her parents were renting a farm in Ontario Township, Knox County, with her younger brother Lewis and her sisters Jennie and Edna; Viola, then in her mid-twenties, was no longer living with them.3 The old family tree, copying another member's tree, says that she married Hugh N. Cawkins in Knox County on 25 October 1894 and that she died on 20 December 1930 at Revere, Redwood County, Minnesota; no record of either has yet been found.2

- Identity: Viola, 6, is the daughter in the Porter County household of Nathan K. and Louisa Curtis in 1880, the couple whose son Arthur was born there that October.1
- Middle name: Jenet is the old tree's only; it needs a record.2
- Marriage (lead): To Hugh N. Cawkins, 25 Oct 1894, Knox County, Illinois, per the old tree.2 The Knox County marriage records (Illinois county marriages on FamilySearch and Ancestry) should be searched; the date fits a young woman of about 21 whose family was in Knox County by 1900.3
- Death (lead): 20 Dec 1930, Revere, Redwood County, Minnesota, per the old tree.2 The same tree places her mother's death at Ericson, Renville County, Minnesota, in 1929 (also unsourced), and her brother Arthur's family settled in neighbouring Chippewa County about 1920, so a move to that part of Minnesota is plausible.
