Jennie M. Curtis was born in November 1887, probably in Illinois, a daughter of Nathan K. Curtis and Louisa Thomas.1–2 Her parents had come from Porter County, Indiana, where they were living with her eldest sister, Viola, in 1880, the year her brother Arthur Garfield was born.

In June 1900 Jennie, twelve and still at school, was living with her parents on a rented farm in Ontario Township, Knox County, Illinois, with her brother Lewis, fifteen, and her little sister Edna, six.1–2 Ten years later her parents were living at Spencer, Iowa, with only Edna at home; Jennie, then about twenty-two, had left, perhaps to marry.3 Her later life has not yet been traced.
