He was a devoted member of the German Reformed church near his farm.[@acj1916][@booster] He belonged to the Gen. J. B. Steadman Post No. 172 of the Grand Army of the Republic at Appleton City;[@gar1916] in August 1897 he had registered with the Union veterans at the reunion in Springfield as "L. Hegnauer, Co. E, 4th Mo.", and on Decoration Day 1911 he was among the old soldiers at the service in the Methodist church at Appleton City.[@reunion1897][@decoration1911] He applied for a Civil War invalid pension in July 1903, and again in February 1907, and was issued pension certificate no. 1,097,644.[@penorg][@pengen]

On Tuesday, 28 August 1906, Leonhard moved the family from the farm to Appleton City, just across the county line in St. Clair County, into the Deardoff house in the south-west of the town, "in order that his son, who is now entering the threshold of manhood, may attend the Academy".[@acjmove1906][@rhtmove1906] The Journal called the move temporary, but he and Susan stayed for the rest of his life, and their son Christian farmed the old home place; the 1910 census found them in Appleton City with Robert.[@acjtemp1906][@booster][@census1910] In 1908 Leonhard gave $50 to the fund for the Academy's new building,[@academy1908] and from 1908 to 1913 he was one of the judges of the city elections in the Second Ward, and in August 1908 a Republican judge of the primary.[@cityjudge][@primary1908] In January 1910 the Journal said it was waiting to hear from "old timers" such as L. Hegnauer when there had ever before been a winter like that one.[@oldtimers1910]

The house was often full of family.    Robert's account: In Feb 1918 Robert told a Wells paper that news of his father's death had reached him "under almost the same circumstances" as his mother's, the letter about the illness arriving after the message announcing the death. The Wells and Appleton City papers of Oct–Nov 1916 show instead that he was summoned by his father's illness on Friday 27 Oct and arrived the next evening, three days before the death; the contemporary reports are preferred.[@wells1918][@robert1916]

   Sale to Link (1911): The Butler Daily Democrat (6 Feb), the Rich Hill Mining Review and the Bates County Democrat (9 Feb 1911) print $2,800; the Butler Times-Press (18 Feb) prints $1,800.     The "R. L. Hegnauer" who won with coop chickens at the Appleton City fair in 1911 and entered white corn in 1912 is his son Robert. The "Leonard Hegnauer" appointed census enumerator for Pleasant Gap in 1900 is his son Leonard. The "Leonard Hegnauer" who was president of the township Sunday-school association in 1916 and spoke at the county convention in 1918, and the "Mrs. L. Hegnauer" of the Rockville Route One column whose quilting was reported in Feb 1916, are the grandson Leonard S. and his wife. The "Leonard Hegnauer" among the Academy's visitors in Feb 1911 is probably the grandson.
