The family seems to have gone first to Highland, in Madison County, Illinois, where Margreth's elder sister Barbara was living with her family by 1860, and to have moved on to Missouri soon afterwards.[@martinobit1927][@hist1883][@tontz] There they settled in Boeuf Township, Gasconade County.[@acj1916][@census1860] Germans had settled in large numbers in the Missouri River valley in the 1830s and 1840s,[@shsmogerman] and Hermann, a town on the Missouri River, had been laid out in 1837 by the German Settlement Association of Philadelphia; a post office in the north-west of Boeuf Township was later named Swiss, because most of the people there came from Switzerland.[@shsmoplaces]

Append to the paragraph that ends "Where they lived next is not known."

Their daughter Christina was still living in the county in 1869, when she married Sylvester Kraettly, a Swiss farmer whose family had settled near Hermann.[@hermann1916]

1. "Death:" Replace "no death notice was found in Missouri newspapers on Newspapers.com (1884–1900)" with:

   No death, funeral, burial or estate notice was found on Newspapers.com (27 Sep 2026). About 230 queries covered Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Oregon papers of 1856–1900 and more than 25 spellings, wildcards, and split or OCR-misread forms (Hegnaner, Hegenaur, Hageneur, "Heg-/nauer" and others). They included the Bates, St. Clair, Vernon, Henry and Gasconade county papers held there, and retrospective items to 1960 that name Hegnauer with Gasconade or Krattly (Luzius Hegnauer and Anna Margreth Bernet in the papers, 1856–1900). The Butler Times-Press (1892–93) and the Bates County Republican (1893–1901) have gaps on the site, and no Papinville, Rockville or Prairie City paper survives there from before 1900.

2. "Where the family settled:" Replace "That can at most have been a brief first stop" and the sentences that follow it with:

   His son Martin's obituary (1927) also says the family settled first "in Highland, Ill., later moving to Gasconade County Mo.", so three accounts from two branches of the family (1883, 1918, 1927) agree on a first stop in Madison County, Illinois.[@martinobit1927] It can only have been short, and it is now graded probable. Luzius was probably dealing in land in Gasconade County in 1857, a "Luzius Hegnaner" witnessed a marriage in Boeuf Township in 1858, Barbara was born in Gasconade County in 1859, the family was there in 1860, and Luzius held a farm there from 1860 at the latest until Dec 1868.[@deedidx1857][@witness1858][@mort1860][@sale1868] Margreth's sister Barbara Tontz was living in Township 4 N, Range 5 W, of Madison County (the Highland area) by 1860, which may explain the choice.[@tontz] Martin's "1854" is wrong. It was Leonhard and John who lived in Madison County after the war.

   After the sale of the farm (1869–1880): Christina was "of this county" (Gasconade) when she married Sylvester Kraettly in 1869.[@hermann1916] Barbara's obituary (1923) says she came to Bates County from Gasconade County, which suggests that her parents, with whom she lived, moved there directly; it gives no year.[@barbaraobit1923] The family is still unfound in 1870.

4. New bullet:

   "L. Hegnauer" in Bates County newspapers, 1885–1893: Five items name an "L. Hegnauer" without a full given name: a taxpayers' call on the railroad bonds of the old Prairie Township (1885); a Willow Branch bridge petition and a Shire-horse company (1891); an organ bought by "one of oldest settlers in Pleasant Gap neighborhood" (1892); and a petit juror (1893). All are attributed to his son [[H0003|Leonhard]]. The reasons: the items concern landholders and public business, Luzius is not known to have owned land in Bates County, "oldest settlers" means earliest settlers (Leonhard came in 1869–70, and Luzius is not recorded in the county before 1880), the fellow signers were Leonhard's associates, and Luzius was 73 in 1893.
