Life story
Bertha Ellen Wilson was born about 1891, the youngest child of Elijah Daniel "Lige" Wilson and Sarah Ellen "Ella" Chandler. Her birth came about the time the family moved from Benton County, Arkansas, to McDonald County, Missouri, and whether she was born in Arkansas or at Pineville, Missouri, as family trees say, is not yet known.1 In June 1900 "Burtha", 8, was the youngest in the household on her parents' rented farm in Elk River Township, with her brothers James and William and her sisters Nancy and Mattie.1
By April 1910, when she was about eighteen, she had married Claude (Claud H.) Gatton, and they were living next door to her parents in Elk River Township with a young child.2 Lige died in 1912. By January 1920 the Gattons had moved to Rocky Dell Road at Gravette, Benton County, Arkansas, with five children, Richard, Cannen (perhaps Carmen), Cleo, Ross and the baby Julia, and Bertha's widowed mother, Ella, was living with them.3
