Crawford County

Sarah Ellen Chandler, who was always called Ella, was born on 4 March 1863 in Crawford County, Missouri, in the Ozark hills southwest of St. Louis, in the middle of the Civil War.1 She was the youngest known child of John Chandler and Martha Jane Whitehead, both Missourians.1–2 Her father seems to have died before she could know him: FamilySearch's tree says he died a few months before she was born, though no record of his death has been found. In June 1870 her mother, now called Jane Chandler, was keeping house alone in Osage Township, Crawford County, with a little land and $375 in personal property. Thomas, 18, was farming, and George, James, William and Sarah, who was six or seven, were still at home.3

Joplin

By 1880 the family had moved west to the booming lead-mining town of Joplin, in Jasper County, near the Kansas line. Ella's mother, recorded as M. J. Chandler, was 48. Her sons George, Robert James and William Henry, aged 25, 23 and 19, lived with her, and Ella, 17, kept house.2

Lige

A year later Ella was across the Arkansas line in Benton County. On Wednesday, 20 July 1881, the county clerk issued a licence for the marriage of "E. D. Wilson aged 20 years" and "Ella Chandler aged 18 years". The next day, 21 July 1881, J. S. McIntyre, a justice of the peace, married her to Elijah Daniel "Lige" Wilson, a farmer's son from Ball Township.4

Their first child, James Israel, was born in June 1882. Nancy followed in February 1884, William Alfred in March 1886 and Martha June, called Mattie, on 14 January 1889 in Benton County.5–6 The youngest, Bertha, was born about 1891.5

A farm wife on the Elk River

By 1900 the family had crossed back into Missouri. In June that year they were renting a farm in Elk River Township, McDonald County. Sarah, 37, had borne five children and all were living. Her brother Robert, now 43 and still single, had come to live with them.5 Ten years later, in April 1910, she and Lige were on a rented farm in the same township. Mattie, 21, was still at home, and so was her brother, now recorded as James Chandler. Her youngest daughter, Bertha, now married to Claude Gatton, lived next door.7

Widowhood

Lige died of consumption at their home near Butler Creek on 2 December 1912, after a long illness. He was buried in the Butler Creek Cemetery at Sulphur Springs, just over the state line in Arkansas.8–9 Ella was forty-nine.

After Lige's death she made her home, at least for a time, with her daughter Bertha's family. In January 1920 she was "mother-in-law" in the household of Claud H. Gatton on Rocky Dell Road at Gravette, Benton County, Arkansas, among five Gatton grandchildren, the youngest a baby.10

Frank Phillips

By 1927 Ella was living at Noel again. On Monday, 11 April 1927, the recorder at Pineville issued a licence for her marriage to Frank Phillips of Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, and on Tuesday, 12 April, a justice of the peace married them at Noel. Ella was sixty-four.11 Little is known of Frank, except that he died before her.1

Last days

By the end of her life Ella was living far to the north, in Cass County, Missouri, south of Kansas City. She died there, a widow, in West Dolan Township on Wednesday, 6 January 1937, of an intestinal obstruction brought on by gall bladder disease, two days after a doctor from Harrisonville had seen her. She was seventy-three. Her son Alfred, of Pittsburg, Kansas, gave the particulars for her death certificate. An undertaker from Cleveland, Missouri, took her back to Sulphur Springs, and she was buried in the Butler Creek Cemetery, where Lige lay.1, 9, 12

Four years later her eldest son, James, died in Aberdeen, Washington. His death certificate names his mother as Sarah Chandler.13–14

    FamilySearch gives Osage Township, where she was living in 1870; the township of her birth is not recorded. Her son James's death certificate (1941) gives McDonald County, Missouri, which is wrong.

    Her death certificate gives the full date, 4 March 1863, and Crawford County, Missouri; her age there, 73 years, 10 months and 2 days, agrees with it to the day. The census of 1900 gives March 1863, and her ages in 1880 (17), on her licence of July 1881 (18) and in 1910 (47) fit. The 1870 census has her, aged 6, in Osage Township, Crawford County, with her mother, and every census gives Missouri as her birthplace. Two ages are a year or so young: 6 in June 1870 (she was 7) and 55 in January 1920 (she was 56). McDonald County, on her son's death certificate, was the family's later home, given by an informant who did not know her. Crawford County is accepted.

    By J. S. McIntyre, a justice of the peace, under a licence issued the day before (20 Jul 1881) by John Black, clerk of Benton County, to "E. D. Wilson aged 20 years" and "Ella Chandler aged 18 years"; recorded 28 Jul 1881 (Benton County marriage record, p. 190). The marriage ended with his death on 2 Dec 1912. Five children, born 1882–about 1891.

    The licence and the justice's certificate of the marriage, recorded in Benton County on 28 July 1881, were read on the FamilySearch image; Ancestry's index of the same record agrees. The ages on the licence, 20 and 18, fit his birth in April 1861 and hers in March 1863, and their first child was born eleven months later, in June 1882. The censuses of 1900 ("married 18 years") and 1910 ("28 years") point to 1882, but they are round answers given twenty and thirty years later; the contemporary licence and return govern.

Frank died before her; her death certificate (Jan 1937) calls her his widow.

    The McDonald County licence and the justice's return (image read) name Ella Wilson of Noel, a widow since 1912, and Frank Phillips of Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, where her first husband was buried. Her death certificate ten years later gives her name as Sarah Ellen Phillips, a widow, and her husband as Frank Phillips.

Owen of Harrisonville, who had seen her on 4 Jan. Missouri death certificate no. 538 (1937); informant her son Alfred Wilson of Pittsburg, Kansas.

    Her Missouri death certificate (image read) gives the date, the township and county, her full name, her exact birth date and birthplace, her parents and her husband Frank Phillips; the informant was her son. The Find a Grave index gives the same date in Cass County. No record disagrees. A second Sarah E. Phillips who died in Cass County in November 1937 (certificate 40937) is a different woman.

    Her death certificate gives burial at Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, and the Find a Grave memorial places her in the Butler Creek Cemetery there, where her first husband's headstone stands. There is no photograph of a stone for her, so the cemetery rests on the memorial and the certificate's town.

  • Birth: Her death certificate gives 4 March 1863, Crawford County, Missouri.1 FamilySearch refines the place to Osage Township, which is where she lived in 1870; that township is not recorded as her birthplace.3 Her son James's death certificate gives McDonald County, Missouri, for her (and for him and his father); that county was the family's later home.13 In 1870 she was "6" (she was 7), and in January 1920 "55" (she was 56); her other ages fit 1863.3, 10
  • Parents (probable): Her death certificate names her father John Chandler and her mother Martha Jane Whitehead, with their birthplaces unknown. The informant was her son, so he was reporting names he had heard, not events he had seen.1 Her mother is well supported, because the certificate's Martha Jane is the "Jane Chandler" with whom Sarah E. lived in Crawford County in 1870 and the "M. J. Chandler" whose daughter she was at Joplin in 1880.3, 2 The same brothers appear in both households, and one of them, Robert James, later lived with Sarah and her husband.5, 7 The Whitehead maiden name rests on the certificate alone; the Find a Grave biography repeats it.12 Her father is named only on the certificate. He was not in the household in 1870 or 1880. FamilySearch (John Chandler Jr., 1831–1862, KJHW-87M) says he died five months before her birth and that her parents married on 17 October 1850 in Osage Township, Crawford County, but neither claim was checked against a record. Her census entries give both parents' birthplace as Missouri.2, 7, 10 Next steps: the 1860 census of Crawford County, which should show John and Martha J. Chandler with Thomas, George, James and the younger children; the Crawford County marriage record of 1850; the 1880 image, whose marital-status column would show whether M. J. Chandler was a widow; and Crawford County probate or guardianship papers for John Chandler's minor children, or his Civil War service, if any.
  • Her brother Robert James Chandler: "R. J.", son, 23, in 1880; "Robert Chadler [Chandler]", Elijah's brother-in-law, 43, in 1900; "James Chandler", brother-in-law, 53, in 1910. All three ages point to a birth about 1857.2, 5, 7 He is the "James", 11, of the 1870 household.3 FamilySearch has him as Robert "James" Chandler (1857–1935), KJHW-86S. He has no profile in this study yet.
  • Marriage date (conflict): 21 July 1881 by the licence and the justice's return; the censuses of 1900 and 1910 point to 1882. The licence governs.4, 5, 7
  • Children (conflict): In 1900 she had borne five children, all living, and all five were at home. In 1910 her line reads "3" born and "3" living, which is wrong: five had been born by 1900, and at least four (James, William, Mattie and Bertha) were alive after 1910; Nancy has not been traced after 1900.5, 7, 13, 6, 1, 10 Five children are recorded.
  • Second husband: Frank Phillips was "of Sulphur Springs", Benton County, Arkansas, and over 21 in April 1927.11 Her death certificate calls her his widow in January 1937.1 Nothing else is known of him. The couple was not found in the 1930 census. Ancestry's 1930 index was searched for Ella Phillips born about 1863, for Frank Phillips with a wife Ella, and for Sarah Phillips born about 1863, with no match in Benton, McDonald or Cass counties. FamilySearch's 1930 index, searched for a Phillips born 1861–1865 in Missouri with a spouse named Frank, gives one household near her later home: "F W Phillips", born about 1864 in Missouri, at Harrisonville, Cass County. That household was not opened, and the identification is only possible. It would explain how she came to be living in Cass County. Frank's death and burial have not been found. FamilySearch has him as G2FV-6RP, with no marriage.
  • Death place: West Dolan Township, Cass County, on her certificate.1 A member tree gives "Westline", for West Line, a village in Cass County; this fits but is not in the certificate. Why she was in Cass County is not known. Her son William Alfred was living at Pittsburg, Kansas, and her daughter Mattie held a Social Security number issued in Kansas.1, 6
  • Burial: Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, on her certificate; Butler Creek Cemetery on Find a Grave, where there is no photograph of a stone for her.1, 12 Her first husband's headstone is in the same cemetery.9 The burial date is not recorded.
  • Obituary: Not found. Two Newspapers.com searches were made, for 6–31 January 1937: Phillips with "Sulphur Springs" (815 hits, no Cass County or McDonald County paper on the first page), and "Mrs. Frank Phillips" in Missouri (8 hits, none about her). The Harrisonville (Cass County) and Gravette, Arkansas, papers for January 1937 are the next places to look.
  • Not her: Sarah E. Phillips who died in Cass County on 22 November 1937 (Missouri certificate 40937) is a different woman.
  • WikiTree and FamilySearch: WikiTree Chandler-14705 ("Sarah Ellen (Chandler) Phillips") has the right dates but no parents and no second husband. FamilySearch KJHW-8F1 has sixteen sources, but not the 1910 census or her death certificate.
