Arkansas and the Elk River

James Israel Wilson was born on 14 June 1882 in Arkansas, the eldest child of Elijah Daniel Wilson and Sarah Ellen "Ella" Chandler.1–3 His parents are said to have married the summer before, in July 1881, in Benton County, in the far northwest corner of Arkansas, and that is the likeliest place of his birth (see Research Notes). The family stayed in Arkansas through the 1880s: his sister Nancy was born there in 1884, his brother William in 1886 and his sister Mattie in 1889.2

Before the end of the century the Wilsons crossed the state line into McDonald County, the hill county in the southwest corner of Missouri. In June 1900 the census taker found them on a rented farm in Elk River Township: Elijah, 39, and Sarah, 37, with James, who would be eighteen in a few days and was working as a farm laborer, though he had been out of work for four months of the past year; Nancy, 16; William, 14; Mattie, 11; the youngest, Bertha, 8; and Sarah's brother, Robert Chandler.2

Lucy

A few miles to the south, just over the Arkansas line at Sulphur Springs in Benton County, lived the family of Lucy M. Harris.4 On Saturday, 21 November 1903, the recorder at Pineville, the county seat, issued a licence for the marriage of "J. I. Wilson of Noel", over twenty-one, and "Lucy Harris of Noel", over eighteen. The next day, Sunday, 22 November, a justice of the peace married them in Elk River Township.5 James was twenty-one and Lucy nineteen.6

The farm on the Elk River

Their first child, Cyril, was born in September 1904, and three more followed quickly: Tulla in 1906, Helen Artlea in 1908 and Floyd in January 1910. In April 1910 the family was still in Elk River Township, where James, 27, was farming on his own account. He owned the farm, though it carried a mortgage. He could read and write. Lucy, 25, had borne four children, and all four were living: Cyril, whom the enumerator wrote down as "Searel", 5; Tulla, 3; Helen, "Artella", 2; and the baby, Floyd.7–8 Odis was born in 1913, Ruth at Noel in April 1915, and Jewel about 1916.9–10

Delaware County, Oklahoma

Sometime between 1915 and 1917 the family moved a few miles west, across another state line, into Delaware County, Oklahoma. Their son Woodrow was born at Bernice on 29 August 1917 (see his profile). On 12 September 1918, the third of the nation's draft registration days, James registered with the local board for Delaware County. He was 36, farming on the rural route out of Afton, and he named Lucy as his nearest relative. The registrar described him as of medium height and stout build, with brown eyes and brown hair.1 The war ended two months later, and he was never called to serve.3

In January 1920 the census taker, who spelled the name Willson, found the family farming in the Bernice precinct of Delaware County: James, 37; Lucy, 35; and nine children, from Cyril, 15, to the baby, Millie.9 Their tenth and last child, Roy, was born about 1920.6

Grays Harbor

About 1923 the Wilsons made the longest move of their lives, from the farms of the Ozark border country to Grays Harbor, on the Pacific coast of Washington, where the sawmills of Aberdeen, Hoquiam and Cosmopolis offered steady work.3–4 James left farming for the mills. In April 1930 the family was renting a house at Junction, in Grays Harbor County, for $20 a month; James, 48, was a laborer in a sawmill. Six of the children were still at home: Floyd, 19; Odis, 16; Ruth, 14; Woodrow, 13; Millie, 10; and Roy, 9.6 The three eldest had left home, and Jewel was not with the family (see Research Notes).

Parting

By the end of the 1930s James and Lucy were living apart. In April 1940 Lucy was living alone at 418 North Division Street in Aberdeen, at the same address as her daughter Helen and Helen's husband, Clarence Fulbright, and she told the census taker that she was a widow. Where James was that spring has not been found.11 Lucy died at home a month later, on 3 May 1940, of tuberculosis. Her death certificate, for which Helen was the informant, calls her married and her husband, "Jas. I. Wilson", living, at 57.4 She was buried in Fern Hill Cemetery.

Last months

On Saturday, 2 August 1941, in Grays Harbor County, James married Carrie Sisson, a woman of about sixty-one whose maiden name was probably Clark.3, 12 They made their home at 822½ East Wishkah Street in Aberdeen, and James worked at a sawmill as an edgerman, running the saw that trims rough boards to width.3

On Monday, 8 December 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor, James was taken to Aberdeen General Hospital, where he died at one o'clock that afternoon of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was fifty-nine.3, 13–15 Three days later, on 11 December, the Elerding Mortuary buried him in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, in the 6th Addition, some distance from Lucy's grave.3, 16–17 No obituary has been found.

James and Lucy had ten children: Robert Cyril (born 1904), Tulla Daniel (1906), Helen Artlea (1908), Floyd Perry (1910), Odis Alfred (1913), Ruth Elizabeth (1915), Jewel L. (about 1916), Woodrow Elgia (1917), Millie Mae (1919) and Roy Kenneth (about 1920).6–7, 9

  • Second marriage. Only the Digital Archives index of the marriage of James I Wilson and Carrie Sisson (2 Aug 1941, Grays Harbor County) has been seen; it was found by a search for any Wilson groom with a bride named Carrie, 1938–1941, which returned only this marriage.
  • Obituary. Not found. com was searched for James Wilson with Aberdeen, Washington, 1941 (62 hits, none about him) and for Wilson with Aberdeen and Elerding, 8–31 Dec 1941 (none).

Wilson of Noel", over 21, and "Lucy Harris of Noel", over 18; returned and recorded 25 Nov 1903 (McDonald County marriage records, 1901–1907, p. 153). Ten children, born 1904–1920. They seem to have separated by 1940 (see Research Notes); no divorce has been found, and Lucy's death certificate (May 1940) calls her married.

    The marriage licence and the justice's return, recorded in McDonald County (image read), name J. I. Wilson and Lucy Harris, both of Noel, married 22 Nov 1903 at Elk River Township. The 1910 census, taken in the same township, gives James and Lucy six years of marriage, and the 1930 census gives his age at first marriage as 21 and hers as 19, which fit his birth in June 1882 and hers in 1883–84. Their first child, Cyril, was born in September 1904. Ancestry's index reads the groom as "J S Wilson" and the place as "Elh River Township"; the image reads J. I. and Elk River.

    Grays Harbor County marriage record, document swgrhmc14504 (index only; no image seen). The bride was Carrie Sisson, about 61, whose maiden name was probably Clark. The marriage ended with his death four months later.

    The Washington State Digital Archives' index of the Grays Harbor County auditor's marriage records gives the marriage of James I Wilson and Carrie Sisson on 2 Aug 1941; it is the only marriage of a Wilson groom to a bride named Carrie in the state's digitised records for 1938–1941. His death certificate of 8 Dec 1941 calls him married, names his wife as Carrie Clark, aged 62, and was signed by the informant as Carrie Wilson, of his own address; the Washington death index also gives his spouse as Carrie Clark. Sisson was probably her surname from an earlier marriage and Clark her maiden name. Only the index of the marriage has been seen.

  • Identity: The records are linked as one man as follows. (1) In June 1900 James, born June 1882 in Arkansas, is the son of Eliga D. and Sarah E. Wilson in Elk River Township, McDonald County, Missouri.2 (2) In November 1903 J. I. Wilson of Noel, over 21, marries Lucy Harris at Elk River Township.5 (3) In 1910 "Jim" Wilson, 27, born in Arkansas, is farming in Elk River Township with his wife Lucy, six years married, and four children.7 (4) In September 1918 James I Wilson, born 14 June 1882, of the Afton rural route in Delaware County, Oklahoma, names Lucy Wilson as his nearest relative.1 (5) In 1920 James I. Willson, 37, born in Arkansas, is in Delaware County with his wife Lucy M. and nine children, and in 1930 James I.   • Name: James Israel Wilson on his death certificate, in his Social Security record and on Find a Grave; he signed his draft card "James I Wilson", and his marriage licence calls him J. I. Wilson.3, 15, 1, 5 The 1920 census spells the surname Willson, as did several of his children for many years.9 "J S Wilson" (the Missouri marriage index), "Jim F." (the 1910 census index) and "G I Wilson" (a FamilySearch index of Floyd's first marriage) are misreadings. WikiTree spells the middle name "Isreal".
  • Birthplace (conflict): Four places are given. (1) Arkansas: the census of 1900, taken in his parents' household, where the answers probably came from one of them, the censuses of 1910, 1920 and 1930, the Find a Grave index, and the marriage certificates of his daughters Ruth (1934) and Millie (1936), both read on the images.2, 7, 9, 6, 17, 20, 19 In 1900 his brother and sisters born in 1884, 1886 and 1889 were also born in Arkansas, and the family was in Missouri only from the 1890s.2 (2) Noel, McDonald County, Missouri: his Social Security record and the NUMIDENT file, which probably come from his own application of about 1936–37, made more than fifty years after his birth.15 Noel was the family's home town from the 1890s, and he gave it as his residence in 1903.5 (3) McDonald County, Missouri: his death certificate, whose informant was his wife of four months; it also gives McDonald County as the birthplace of his father, who was born in Arkansas in 1861, and of his mother, so the informant evidently gave the family's old home for all three.3 The Find a Grave memorial follows it. (4) Rule, Carroll County, Arkansas: WikiTree and a family tree on Ancestry only; no record seen names Rule. Arkansas is accepted. The county has not been proven: his parents married in Benton County on 21 July 1881 (the county marriage record, read on FamilySearch; see his father's profile), and a family tree places the births of his next brother and sister at Robinson, Benton County, but it cites no record. Benton County is the likeliest. The next records to search are his parents' marriage record in Benton County and a delayed birth certificate, if one was filed, and his own Social Security application (form SS-5), which would show what he himself wrote.
  • Date of birth: 14 June 1882 on his draft card, in his Social Security record, on his death certificate and in the Find a Grave index; June 1882 in the 1900 census.1, 15, 3, 2 The Find a Grave memorial alone has 16 June 1882.17
  • Age in 1930: The 1930 census gives 48; he was 47 on the census day, 1 April 1930.6 His other ages fit his birth date.
  • Parents: His death certificate names Elijah Wilson and Sarah Chandler, and the 1900 census shows him as the son of Eliga D. and Sarah E. Wilson, with Sarah's brother Robert Chandler in the household.3, 2 The 1900 census gives his father's birthplace as Arkansas, as does his father's own line, and his mother's as Missouri; the death certificate gives McDonald County for both, and his own 1930 census line, as indexed, Missouri and Iowa.2, 3, 6 Find a Grave calls his mother "Sarah Ellen Chandler Phillips", which points to a later marriage of hers; this is for her own profile.17
  • Marriage to Lucy: The McDonald County record gives the licence, issued at Pineville on 21 Nov 1903, and the justice's return of the marriage on 22 Nov 1903 at Elk River Township.5 Ancestry's index misreads the groom's initials as "J S" and the township as "Elh River". A newspaper notice of a marriage of James Wilson and Lucy Harris on 20 Oct 1901 (Cherokee County Republican, Baxter Springs, Kansas, 25 Oct 1901) concerns another couple: that groom was 25 and the bride 19, both of Cherokee County, Kansas, and they went to live at Pierce City, Missouri, while this James was 17 and single at Elk River in June 1900 and married in McDonald County in 1903.
  • Separation (conflict): In the census of April 1940 Lucy, answering for herself, gave her marital status as widowed; she was living alone in Aberdeen.11 Her death certificate, five weeks later, calls her married and her husband living, aged 57, and James lived until December 1941.4, 3 They had evidently separated, and she may have called herself a widow for that reason. James has not been found in the 1940 census: searches of Ancestry's index for James Wilson and James I. Wilson, born 1880–1884, living in Washington (with and without Missouri or Arkansas as birthplace), and of FamilySearch's index for James Wilson born 1880–1884 in Grays Harbor County, found no candidate. No divorce has been found; the Digital Archives' divorce records (1925–1941, spouse Lucy Wilson) have nothing, but that series covers only a few counties. They are buried in different parts of Fern Hill Cemetery.17
  • Second marriage: Only the Digital Archives index of the marriage of James I Wilson and Carrie Sisson (2 Aug 1941, Grays Harbor County) has been seen; it was found by a search for any Wilson groom with a bride named Carrie, 1938–1941, which returned only this marriage.12 His death certificate names his wife as Carrie Clark, aged 62, and was signed by Carrie Wilson as informant.3 Clark was probably her maiden name and Sisson a name from an earlier marriage. A "Cary Sison", 60, a widow and practical nurse born in Missouri, lodging on East First Street in Aberdeen in 1940 and in San Diego in 1935, may be her, but this has not been proven. Her later life and death have not been traced.
  • The move to Oklahoma: Ruth was born at Noel in April 1915 and Woodrow at Bernice, Oklahoma, in August 1917, so the family moved between those dates.10 In the 1920 census the column for the father's birthplace reads Oklahoma on Jewel's line (as on Woodrow's), which may be a slip for her own birthplace; if so, the move had come by 1916.9
  • Draft card: The card gives his home as R.F.D. no. 1, Afton, "Delaware, Okla." Afton itself lies in Ottawa County, just north of the Delaware County line; its rural route evidently served farms in northern Delaware County, where the family was enumerated at Bernice in 1920.1, 9
  • The move to Washington: The death certificates give James 18 years and Lucy 16 years "in this community", so the family came to Grays Harbor about 1923–24.3, 4 No record of the journey has been found.
  • Military service: He registered for the draft in 1918 but was not called; his death certificate answers "No" to military service.1, 3
  • Obituary: Not found. Newspapers.com was searched for James Wilson with Aberdeen, Washington, 1941 (62 hits, none about him) and for Wilson with Aberdeen and Elerding, 8–31 Dec 1941 (none). The Aberdeen Daily World for 9–12 Dec 1941 does not appear to be on the site and is the next place to look.
  • Children: Ten children are known, all with Lucy: Robert Cyril (born 9 Sep 1904 according to the family tree; "Searel" in 1910, Cyril in 1920), Tulla Daniel (1906), Helen Artlea (6 May 1908; "Artella" in 1910; Mrs. Clarence Fulbright), Floyd Perry (Jan 1910), Odis Alfred (1913), Ruth Elizabeth (7 Apr 1915, Noel), Jewel L. (about 1916), Woodrow Elgia (29 Aug 1917, Bernice, Oklahoma), Millie Mae (1919 or 1920) and Roy Kenneth (about 1920).7, 9, 6, 8, 10 In April 1910 Lucy had borne four children, all living.7 The records of four of the children name James and Lucy as their parents, three of them with Lucy's maiden name, Harris.10, 19, 18, 8 The marriage certificates of Ruth (1934) and Millie (1936), read on the images, both give Lucy's maiden name as Harris and both parents' birthplace as Arkansas; Ruth's gives the parents' middle initials wrongly, as "James A." and "Lucy A.".20, 19 The family tree's birth date for Jewel, 16 Jun 1917, cannot be right, ten weeks before Woodrow's birth; she was 3 in January 1920, so she was born about 1916. She was not with the family in 1930, when she would have been about 14, and her later life has not been traced. Millie's birth is given as 22 Apr 1919 in Missouri by the family tree and as about 1920 in Oklahoma by her marriage record of 1936.19
