Life story
Claud H. Gatton, called Claude, was born about 1884.1–2 On 10 February 1909, at Pineville, the seat of McDonald County in the southwest corner of Missouri, he married Bertha Ellen Wilson, about seventeen, the youngest child of Elijah Daniel "Lige" Wilson and Sarah Ellen "Ella" Chandler, according to the county's marriage record as the old family tree cites it.3 In April 1910 Claude, twenty-six, and Bertha were living in Elk River Township, next door to her parents' rented farm, with their first child.1
By January 1920 the Gattons had crossed the state line to Rocky Dell Road at Gravette, in Benton County, Arkansas. Claud H. Gatton, thirty-six, headed a household of eight: Bertha, their children Richard, ten, Cannen (perhaps Carmen), nine, Cleo, eight, Ross, six, and the baby, Julia, and Bertha's widowed mother, Ella Wilson.2
Bertha died in 1969 and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Hiwasse, a few miles east of Gravette; her memorial names her husband Claude Gatton and two sons, Richard and Calvin Franklin.4 When and where Claude died has not yet been found.
