Erwin Dale Chrisman was born in Iowa on 23 March 1911, a son of Glenn Chrisman and Loretta Vroman. Three weeks later, on 16 April, he was baptized at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Davenport, on the Mississippi.1–2

On 12 May 1937 Erwin, twenty-six, and Mary Ann Worek, nineteen, a daughter of Polish immigrants from Joliet, Illinois, took out a licence and were married the same day in Lake County, Indiana, just across the state line.3–4 That autumn they were married again in the Church, at St. Thaddeus in Joliet, where the priest wrote Erwin's names in Latin, as Ervinus Dale.2 The couple made their home in Lake County, where a son was born to them in 1939 (possibly living), and by February 1940 Mary was Mary Worek Chrisman to the Social Security Administration.5 In 1945 the Gary city directory listed Erwin D. and Mary A. Chrisman at 528 Porter Street.6

The marriage did not last: by March 1950 Mary, still using the name Chrisman, was living at Pittsburg, Kansas, and married Woodrow E. Wilson.7 Erwin later went west to southern California. He died in Los Angeles County on 27 January 1981, aged sixty-nine; his last home was at El Monte, in the San Gabriel Valley.1

  • Identity of the death records: (1) Erwin D. is the English form of the register's Ervinus Dale; (2) his birth on 23 Mar 1911 in Iowa falls three weeks before the baptism at Davenport recorded in the register; (3) the death index's mother's maiden name "Broman" is a misreading of Vroman, the mother named in the register; (4) his Social Security number was issued in Indiana, where the couple lived in 1937–1945.
