Carrie Clark was born about 1879; Clark was probably her maiden name.1 Where she was born and how she came to Grays Harbor, on the coast of Washington, have not been found (see Research Notes).

On Saturday, 2 August 1941, in Grays Harbor County, Carrie, then using the surname Sisson, probably from an earlier marriage, married James Israel Wilson, a sawmill edgerman of fifty-nine whose wife, Lucy, had died the year before.2 They made their home at 822½ East Wishkah Street in Aberdeen.1

The marriage lasted four months. On Monday, 8 December 1941, James was taken to Aberdeen General Hospital, where he died that afternoon of a cerebral hemorrhage. Carrie gave the particulars for his death certificate: she named herself as his wife, Carrie Clark, aged sixty-two, and signed as Carrie Wilson.1, 3 He was buried in Fern Hill Cemetery three days later. Nothing more is known of Carrie.

    Grays Harbor County marriage record, document swgrhmc14504 (index only; no image seen). The bride was Carrie Sisson, about 61. The marriage ended with his death four months later.

    The Washington State Digital Archives' index of the Grays Harbor County auditor's marriage records gives the marriage of James I Wilson and Carrie Sisson on 2 Aug 1941; it is the only marriage of a Wilson groom to a bride named Carrie in the state's digitised records for 1938–1941. His death certificate of 8 Dec 1941 calls him married, names his wife as Carrie Clark, aged 62, and was signed by the informant as Carrie Wilson, of his own address; the Washington death index also gives his spouse as Carrie Clark. Sisson was probably her surname from an earlier marriage and Clark her maiden name. Only the index of the marriage has been seen.

Research notes

  • Identity: The Carrie Sisson of the marriage index of 2 Aug 1941 and the Carrie Clark of James's death certificate of 8 Dec 1941 are taken to be one woman: the certificate calls James married and names his wife Carrie, of his own address; the marriage is the only one in Washington's digitised county records for 1938–1941 of a Wilson groom and a bride named Carrie; and there was no time for another marriage between August and December.2, 1 The Washington death index also gives his spouse as Carrie Clark.3
  • Name: Clark on the certificate (she was the informant) is taken to be her maiden name, since a certificate asked for a married woman's name in that form; Sisson, in the marriage index, a name from an earlier marriage. Neither is proven. The marriage record itself, which has not been seen, would give her maiden name, her parents, her birthplace and any earlier marriages.2
  • A possible 1940 census entry: A "Cary Sison", 60, widowed, a practical nurse born in Missouri, was lodging at 518 East First Street in Aberdeen in April 1940, and had been living in San Diego, California, in 1935 (1940 census, Aberdeen, sheet 7B; ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/67435519:2442). Her age and her surname fit, but nothing else links her to Carrie; it is a lead only.
  • After 1941: Her later life, death and burial have not been searched for. Washington death indexes after 1941 (under Wilson, Clark and Sisson) and Fern Hill Cemetery, near James's grave in the 6th Addition, are the places to begin.
  • Sources: The marriage is known from the Digital Archives' index only; James's death certificate was read on Ancestry (image). She is not yet in the Ancestry tree, and she has no FamilySearch or WikiTree ID recorded.
