Sulphur Springs

Lucy M. Harris was born on 25 November 1883 at Sulphur Springs, in Benton County, Arkansas, a daughter of John Harris.1 Sulphur Springs lies in the far northwest corner of Arkansas, just below the Missouri line and a few miles from Noel, Missouri. Her mother was probably Ann, whose maiden name is not known (see Research Notes).

In June 1900 the census taker found a Harris family in Sulphur Springs Township that was very probably hers. John Harris, seventy, had been born in South Carolina and farmed land he owned free of debt. His wife, Ann, fifty-five, born in Georgia, had borne eleven children, nine of whom were living. At home were John W., 27; Jeff, 22; Jery, 20; Nancy, 18; Lucy, 16; and Joe, 14, all born in Arkansas; and an eighteen-year-old stepson of John's, whose surname appears to be Weeks. Lucy could read but not write.2

Marriage

Just across the state line, in McDonald County, Missouri, lived James Israel Wilson, a farmer's son about a year and a half older than Lucy. By the autumn of 1903 both of them were living at Noel. On Saturday, 21 November 1903, the recorder at Pineville, the county seat, issued a licence for the marriage of "J. I. Wilson of Noel", over twenty-one, and "Lucy Harris of Noel", over eighteen, and on Sunday, 22 November, a justice of the peace married them in Elk River Township.3 Lucy was nineteen, three days short of her twentieth birthday, and James was twenty-one.4

A houseful of children

Lucy's first child, Cyril, was born in September 1904, and three more followed: Tulla in 1906, Helen Artlea in May 1908 and Floyd in January 1910.5–6 When the census taker came in April 1910 the family was farming in Elk River Township, on a farm James owned, with a mortgage. Lucy, 25, had borne four children, and all four were living.5 Odis was born in 1913, Ruth at Noel in April 1915 and Jewel about 1916.7–8

Oklahoma

Between 1915 and 1917 the family moved a few miles west into Delaware County, Oklahoma, where Woodrow was born at Bernice in August 1917 (see his profile). In September 1918, when James registered for the draft, he gave Lucy's name as his nearest relative, at their home on the rural route out of Afton.9 In January 1920 the family was farming in the Bernice precinct of Delaware County: James, 37; Lucy, 35; and nine children, from Cyril, 15, to the baby, Millie.7 Lucy's tenth and last child, Roy, was born about 1920.4

Grays Harbor

About 1924 Lucy came with the family to Grays Harbor, on the Washington coast, where James went to work in the sawmills.1 In April 1930 they were renting a house at Junction, in Grays Harbor County. Lucy, 45, was keeping house for James and six of the children: Floyd, 19; Odis, 16; Ruth, 14; Woodrow, 13; Millie, 10; and Roy, 9.4

Last years

By the end of the 1930s Lucy and James were living apart. When the census taker came in April 1940, Lucy, 56, was living alone in a rented home at 418 North Division Street in Aberdeen, at the same address as her daughter Helen, Helen's husband, Clarence Fulbright, and their two little girls. She answered the questions herself and gave her marital status as widowed, though James was still living (see Research Notes). She had had five years of schooling.10

Lucy had been ill with tuberculosis for several years. She died at home at a quarter past six on the evening of Friday, 3 May 1940, aged fifty-six, and Helen gave the particulars for her death certificate.1, 11–12 On Tuesday, 7 May, the Elerding Mortuary buried her in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, in the 4th Addition. Her stone reads "Rest In Peace".1, 13 James married again the following year and died in December 1941 (see his profile). No obituary for Lucy has been found.

Lucy and James had ten children: Robert Cyril (born 1904), Tulla Daniel (1906), Helen Artlea (1908), Floyd Perry (1910), Odis Alfred (1913), Ruth Elizabeth (1915), Jewel L. (about 1916), Woodrow Elgia (1917), Millie Mae (1919) and Roy Kenneth (about 1920).4–5, 7

    The date and town are from her death certificate, for which her daughter Helen was the informant. The 1900 census gives May 1884, Arkansas; the censuses of 1920 and 1940 give Missouri as her birthplace (see Research Notes). No birth record exists: Arkansas had no state registration of births until 1914.

    Her death certificate gives the full date, 25 November 1883, and the place, Sulphur Springs, Arkansas; the Washington death index and the Find a Grave index repeat the date. Her age in the 1940 census, 56, which she gave herself, fits it, and so does her age at first marriage in the 1930 census, 19: she married three days before her twentieth birthday. The 1900 census, taken in her parents' household, gives May 1884, and her ages in 1910 (25), 1920 (35) and 1930 (45) fit May 1884 rather than November 1883. With no birth record, the certificate's exact date is preferred and May 1884 is kept as an alternate. For the place, the certificate names Sulphur Springs, the township where she was living with her parents in 1900, and the censuses of 1900, 1910 and 1930 give Arkansas; only those of 1920 and 1940 give Missouri, the state she moved to at her marriage. Sulphur Springs, Benton County, Arkansas, is accepted.

In the household of John Harris (70, farmer, owning his farm free of mortgage) and Ann (55), with her brothers John W., Jeff, Jery and Joe, her sister Nancy and an 18-year-old stepson of the head, surnamed Weeks [reading]. A probable identification (see Research Notes).

    The daughter's name and age (16, fitting a birth in 1883–84), the township, which is the birthplace on her death certificate, the head's given name, John, which is her father's on that certificate, and the nearness of Sulphur Springs to Noel, her home when she married three years later, point to this household. It is the only record so far that places Lucy with John and Ann Harris, so the identification is probable, not proven.

    By a justice of the peace, Charles Sh[ore?], at Elk River Township, under a licence issued at Pineville, the county seat, on 21 Nov 1903 to "J. I. Wilson of Noel", over 21, and "Lucy Harris of Noel", over 18; returned and recorded 25 Nov 1903 (McDonald County marriage records, 1901–1907, p. 153). Ten children, born 1904–1920. They seem to have separated by 1940 (see Research Notes); no divorce has been found, and her death certificate (May 1940) calls her married.

    The marriage licence and the justice's return, recorded in McDonald County (image read), name J. I. Wilson and Lucy Harris, both of Noel, married 22 Nov 1903 at Elk River Township. The 1910 census, taken in the same township, gives James and Lucy six years of marriage, and the 1930 census gives her age at first marriage as 19 and his as 21, which fit her birth in 1883–84 and his in June 1882. Their first child, Cyril, was born in September 1904. Ancestry's index reads the groom as "J S Wilson" and the place as "Elh River Township"; the image reads J. I. and Elk River.

  • Parents (probable, not proven): Her death certificate names her father as John Harris, born in Arkansas, and gives her mother's maiden name as "No Record"; the informant was her daughter.1 The Harris household of the 1900 census in Sulphur Springs Township is taken to be hers because four things fit: the daughter's name and age (Lucy, 16, born in Arkansas); the township, which is the birthplace on her death certificate; the head's given name, John, as on the certificate; and the nearness of Sulphur Springs to Noel, where she was living when she married three and a half years later.2, 3 Nothing found contradicts it, but it rests on this one census: John Harris is a common name, and the certificate's birthplace for him, Arkansas, does not match the census's South Carolina (the informant, his granddaughter, may not have known it). The identification is probable. Proof would come from a record of John or Ann Harris's death, burial, will, probate or land that names Lucy Wilson; from an obituary of one of her brothers or sisters (John W., Jeff, Jery, Nancy, Joe) naming Mrs. Lucy Wilson; or from the 1910 census of Ann Harris or of a brother with whom she lived. Ann is taken to be Lucy's mother because she had been John's wife for thirty years in 1900 and had borne eleven children; the census does not say so directly, and an eighteen-year-old "stepson" in a thirty-year marriage is unexplained, so that line of the image should be read again.2
  • An earlier Harris household (lead): In the 1880 census of Sulphur Springs, Benton County, John R. D. Harris, 40, born in North Carolina, and his wife Rohema A., 32, born in Georgia, have children who may be the John W., Jeff and Jery of 1900 (a son "Ruther W.", 7, a son "James D.", 4, and Jeremiah, 2), with Luiza E., Richard T. J., Mary C. and William J.; Lucy was born later. John's age (40, against 70 in 1900) and birthplace (North Carolina, against South Carolina) do not fit, and the household has not been linked to Lucy. It is a lead only.
  • Parents' birthplaces: South Carolina and Georgia in the 1900 census; Arkansas for her father on her death certificate, which had no record of her mother; Missouri for both in her line of the 1930 census as indexed; "United States" in 1910.2, 1, 4, 5

  • Marriage: The McDonald County record gives the licence, issued at Pineville on 21 Nov 1903, and the justice's return of the marriage on 22 Nov 1903 at Elk River Township; Ancestry's index misreads the place as "Elh River".3 A newspaper notice of a marriage of James Wilson and Lucy Harris on 20 Oct 1901 (Cherokee County Republican, Baxter Springs, Kansas, 25 Oct 1901) concerns another couple, both of Cherokee County, Kansas, aged 25 and 19, who went to live at Pierce City, Missouri; the "residence in Cherokee County, Kansas, about 1901" in one family tree comes from that notice and is not hers.
  • Widowed in 1940 (conflict): In the census of April 1940 she gave her marital status as widowed. Her death certificate, five weeks later, gives her as married, with her husband living, aged 57; James lived until December 1941 and married again in August 1941 (see his profile).10, 1 They had evidently separated, and she may have described herself as a widow for that reason. No divorce has been found. They are buried in different parts of Fern Hill Cemetery.13

  • Children: Ten children are known, all with James: Robert Cyril (born 9 Sep 1904 according to the family tree; "Searel" in 1910), Tulla Daniel (1906), Helen Artlea (6 May 1908; "Artella" in 1910; Mrs. Clarence Fulbright), Floyd Perry (Jan 1910), Odis Alfred (1913), Ruth Elizabeth (7 Apr 1915, Noel), Jewel L. (about 1916), Woodrow Elgia (29 Aug 1917, Bernice, Oklahoma), Millie Mae (1919 or 1920) and Roy Kenneth (about 1920).5, 7, 4, 6, 8 In April 1910 she had borne four children, all living.5 The family tree's birth date for Jewel, 16 Jun 1917, cannot be right, ten weeks before Woodrow's birth; she was 3 in January 1920, so she was born about 1916. She was not with the family in 1930, and her later life has not been traced. Millie's birth is given as 22 Apr 1919 in Missouri by the family tree and as about 1920 in Oklahoma by her marriage record.14
